You could get a good gaming setup + a nice laptop for that price
+Brandon_AC +Anis Rabaa And SSDs are like $200 per Terabyte for the cheaper ones and like twice that for the really fast ones like in the MacBook. Following that logic, the 4 TB SSD option would be like $1500 over the base model and user replaceable. Following Apple logic, it is twice that and soldered while the connector to rescue lost data in case of a critical motherboard defect was removed and the product was not even tested by someone who understands the basics of CPUs, therefore it was patched now, which at least stabilizes the clocks, while still throttling the i9 to just over half of what a properly cooled chip would achieve (2.8 GHz instead of near 5 GHz - remember it is unlocked). I mean, the MacBook is an ultra book, but I mean, just would also not put a rig with a 1080 Ti into a 4 liter case by stripping it down to a minimum and expect it to be cool, would you. Poor iDiots buying this thing for the brand not realizing that with a bit of knowledge they could get used to Linux/Windows or hackintosh a non-Apple-PC (kexts can be a pain in the butt tho).

2012 is better, upgradable hd, ram, can swap the dd for more hd space, thunderbolt inputs are more popular than usb c, can replace all internals if damaged, still uses magsafe charger (30 bucks to replace them now) and still light up logo. Only downside is the screen not being retina

As a graphic designer and videographer, I know that mac was originally designed for professional use. Ten years ago when I started this road, Mac was a great tool. But over time, they moved away from that world, especially when they launched into the world of cell phones. For that reason it does not make a new MacPro since 2013. The same with the portable computers.
I have the Macbook Pro i7 of 2012, the last one that came out before the Retina, and it's much better than those, it was thicker and I did not have Retina, but in performance it's much better.

Sadly apple needs to cater to their main crowd who buys these laptops. As long as the laptop can run a browser to check social media and send emails apple has met the needs of most their users.

i mean people who deal with computers in their jobs, for example (cyber security, database adminstrator, application analysist). If you wanna get in depth why macs are more suited for professionals its because it has a very good Unix operating system, with great UI details. Package managers that makes life much easier with a one command installation like Apt on linus. It is also often easier to simulate your deployment environment without a virtual machine ( mainly for programmers). these are just a few of the main reasons why. Again this is not for everyone but ask people who are invovlve with jobs like coumputer science and software engineering and they probably tell you the same thing

I repair apple products for a living and to everyone that says apple is quality, you haven't seen real quality.
Their motherboard design doesn't make any sense at all.
Components wise, even a Dacia is more trustworthy (no offence towards Dacia).
Build quality sucks so bad. The solder they use is really shit quality.
And how hard is it to make the SSD at least modular. Why solder it on the motherboard? It doesn't make sense at all. At least with the 2017 model there was a chance to recover the data if the motherboard breaks down. But in the 2018 model, apple decided to remove the only connector that would make your life a little bit less stressful in case of a failure.

I recommend Macbook Pro Mid-2012.
Check out windows units again. I used to be Dell, but they've gone down a dark road. Check out Lenovo they actually have really good products in their mid - high range (mid to high in that world is 600-1000). You'd get way more performance and you'd get some upgrade ability. Can you believe they soldered the SSD on to the board so you can't even upgrade a SSD if you need to. Just to be clear I like MacOS, I really do like it it's a wonderful OS. However Win10 fixed 90% of the old end user issues I used to see with Windows. It's a solid OS, and the underlayment of it is very good over Win7. Check it out if you haven't done so in the last say 3 years.

SweBass, Do you know what the actual problem is? The VRMs are underpowered to support the full power consumption of the I9 processor you paid for... Because they are pushing more power to the CPU than they are designed for they heat up faster than the thermals can keep the system cool. What the software update does is throttling earlier so the VRMs can keep going for longer. The biggest problem this creates is that the constantly switching of voltage is that it wears the hardware faster, so this MacBook will fail faster...

An i9 with a somewhat powerfull graphics card is just not possible in such a formfactor. Even the i7 is overkill in such a thin laptop

Back then they had a normal MacBook, a thin one and a Pro.
Since last gen every model has to be thin and light. That does not go together with powerfull hardware.
Apple sells a product named "pro" for pro users but with a design that wont do pro performance.
People buy and i9 thinking it will be more powerfull than the i7 when in reality the second you really want to use the upgrade the i9 offers you will run into thermal problems. Even the iMac Pro has thermal issues compared to a PC since it too is pretty thin and stylish.
They offer a product that they know wont work but they sell it anyway.
Thermal throttling has nothing to do with sortware m8. Apple just put a bandaid over the issue.

Axel Freak the nand cells may possibly start degrading around 20 or so years. Lifespan of an SSD is a not issue now. It'll easily last 10-15 years even with the heaviest workloads. Especially the SSD's Apple uses. I'm a windows person mostly but commend apple for using high quality SSD's. It probably has a TBW rating of over 500 terabytes. Even at 50 gigs of writing every day, that's still 20+ years of use.

You can install mac on other device. You can buy budget laptop, let's say - Acer Aspire 5 for 650 dollars. And just install mac OS on this device. So in the end it will be 7 times cheaper but performance not 7 times weaker. Surface book is better product but still overpriced.
Denis Foster I installed Mac OS on my Surface Book 2 using A VM. It was absolutely terrible. Performance was the worst I've ever seen plus it's not secure to do that anyway.

I have this model with 32Gb and the i9 processor, but it wasn't $7,000.
Anyway, the overheating is incredibly annoying. It overheats when I'm just browsing the internet and not even using a high-end software.
Also, I feel like it's even become worse with time. Whether it's normal wear and tear or the OS being updated, which I think the later because ever since Metal was in full force it seems to heat up faster. I would much prefer a thicker laptop that is able to cool more efficiently than what I currently have.

We talking about laptops here not pcs. Still, you can get cheaper laptops that perform better with the same i9 cpu and only a little thiccer, but at least those stay cool unlike this... Oh and they start at a much lower price, and you can even game on them properly. So yes, the macbook pro IS overpriced, even without all the extras, and that wont ever change. They always been overpriced compared to the quality they offer and will always be.
I think they should bring back the 17". I'm still rocking the Macbook Pro 17" from 2011 and its still going. Best laptop ever.
