Acutually this car is a legalized version of "old man's joy" in rural China regions, those were used for visiting friends in the same village, doing grocery shoping and drive on quite roads with speed limit less than 30miles . Those cars used a legal loophole created 30 yrs before, so they can be purchased without registration or inspection and driven without a license. These are being banned gradually everywhere, and this little car is the next step up and can meet the state minimal requirement regrading safety and pollution, and you do need a license to drive it.

EV cars do not require a shifting transmission because electric motors retain good torque at varying speeds. So more of just a differential than a transmission.

  • @DIYDaveT
    @DIYDaveT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

I'd like a $10,000 version of this with good seats, real air conditioning and better tires and suspension. The top speed for this car of 100kmh is above the top speed limit on Grand Bahama island where I would use it. Normally you don't exceed about 40mph on the island.
Importing electric EV has a tariff of 25%. Importing gas is 50%. A 150km range will easily get you from freeport down to west end and back with plenty of range to spare and if you use solar to charge it with then the high cost of electricity in the Bahamas is not a factor.
You should have shown the cargo capacity with the rear seats down. Why anyone thinks that all cars need to drive 4 adults around is beyond me. I cannot tell you the last time I was in a car with 3 other people. It's not often that I'm in a car with even one other person.
The notion that a low end electric car should start at $35000 is insane. There are hardly any moving parts in it and the transmission is extremely basic. And I'm too old to care about 0-60 times. I just want to get to my destination reliably and have low maintenance and not be reliant on gasoline as a fuel.

Nor does it have 'P' on the gear selector. The idea that a car without airbags is 'too dangerous' to drive seems very odd to those of us who've spent 35 years in that state. The car in which I spent first 10 or so years of my life did not have A/C, electric stabilisator, airbag nor seatbelts for all the passagers, not to mention all the additional gadgets. I have heard Wuling was going to put airbags and seat belts in the new generation of this car. The thing which I find dangerous about this car is the small amount of metal in front of the driver seat. That doesn't look safe in case of an accident but again, this car was made for big cities full of traffic where you won't go over 40kph. The car is made for a specific purpose, although, even for cities with less traffic this car sounds like a really nice option, as long as you remember not to make rough turns and try not to drive too risky. The fact that this electric car costs 5k dollars makes it very attractive to me. If you are rich then you don't care, but that's the thing, there are a lot of cars for rich people out there, hopefully there will be more car companies which try to pander to ordinary people, not to their rich buyers. Just as an example, Dacia is now removing the old version of Sandero and replacing it with more fancy (and more costly!) one. In the last decade most car companies seem to run away from producing simple, cheap cars for ordinary people.

I don’t know why people refer to the Wurling Honguang Minni Van as a toy car or a golf cart. It’s bigger than some of the small cars driven during 1950's and 1960's, and these small cars sold by the thousands. One example is the BMW Isetta. This small vehicle would fit inside Honguang Minni Van with room to spare, and more than I60,000 of these cars were sold. In England, the Austin A30 was a popular small car, as was the Morris Minor, The Hillman Minx. The Fiat 500, was another small car that would fit inside the Honguang Minni Van. The small Volkswagen Beetle was popular worldwide. The Holland Bjering Bedelia was a small car where the passenger sat in the front and the elevated driver in the back, and was popular as a police vehicle., The advantage being the police driver, sitting in the elevated back, could keep an eye on both the road ahead, and the unwilling passenger in the front. There were many popular brands of small cars sold during that period.

Mini EV is a mini version of Wuling Hongguang. The name of “Wuling Hongguang” is a legend in China, you can see the full-size version in the video game Forza Horizon 5 recently 🤣. The full-size version Wuling Hongguang is an MPV with MR patrol engine in a extreme low price. The light body with a large volume and economical cost makes it popular for salesman and delivery in early day China. Wuling is funded by GM and Shanghai Automotive, however, its brand logo is similar to Chevrolet Corvette, which is also a GM brand, that becomes a reason for Chinese Corvette owners to pick a sticker of “hongguang” for their sports car.

Wuling is introducing this car in my country currently. The range topper has airbag, 27hp motor, and 170km range/full battery.
It's a nice car, considering we have a lot of people living in satellite cities that works on big cities here. It has roof too, so people can get to their destination even when it's raining.
Or even for high school/college students like me. Charge it at home, and just drive it. Plus it can be legally driven in toll roads, not like motorcycles/scooters that can't get into toll roads here.
In my case, toll road cut 8kms and 30 minutes from my route to school, so it will be helpful.
I'm just hoping that Wuling fix the aircon. Not freezing cold, but at least can make the cabin cool enough so driver and passengers won't sweat. And to make the radio unit changeable, as cars in this segment usually get not good sounding radio.

Are you sure that’s a multi link rear suspension? That looks very clearly to be a coil sprung solid rear axle.

Looks like golf cart parts underneath. For around town, it's an affordable solution.

The more you talk about the lack of "safety features", the more I think DIY-friendly. Sounds like it's an ebike with 4 wheels so if anything goes bad, you swap it out and off you go.

I'd say the chassi design is the best feature of the car. It looks surprisingly modern aside from that sticker they put on.

Rear seats for this car should be rear facing bench and accessible via rear hatch. Put a head rest pad on the back of front seat head rests. It'll make a nice storage area and you don't have to fold the seats down and give more leg space.

As a wise man once said
There are no bad products, only bad prices. And this price is very good.
