The Ami car has precise specifications because it is intended for young motorists who do not yet have their driving license and therefore French legislation imposes a speed limit, which is why it is slower.
In Spain we have the same legislation for those cars. I actually own a Ligier which is basically the same but not an EV (although there are EV‘s as you can see). Here you can drive those cars if you’re older than 15 with a special license
That is right. But Stellantis group plans to sell the AMI in Germany under the Opel Brand, and specifications will probably be a bet different, especially for the speed limit which could be greather (200 km/h? :-) The faster Opel model could also be sold in UK under the Vauxhall brand... @@olivierfranceschi252 it handles really good, only thing is that atleast on mine the rear suspensions (somewhere, i still dont understand where) kind of make a noise. Might be from all the handbrake turns ive done tho
Interesting tidbit : in France anything over 6 Kw (8 bhp) and 45 kph max speed (28 mph) is considered a proper car, so the Twizy is sold in a power and speed-limited variant that is spec'd identically to the AMI. The 17 BHP version on the other hand requires a driving license, meaning that unlike the AMI, the Twizy also has to conform to all the regular passenger car regulations.
@@phillippie9737 lol, you'd be lucky to go 30mph with all the traffic in our Cities here in the UK, think the average vehicle movement speed is 15mph, plus speed limits of 20mph.
Pretty sure the guy in the ME jumped the start. Taking this into account, it still definitely had the fastest initial acceleration, but I think had they all set off at the same time, the Twizy would have taken the win. Twizy would be my choice for its mad looks and 50mph performance, but surely it wouldn't be too difficult to engineer in some proper doors?.
I've driven a Twizzy. So much fun. The one I drove had trouble stopping wheel spin it accelerated so fast. Ideal for shopping. The only problem it's has very little room for any shopping.
One of the most fun cars I ever had was. Hillman Imp. So slow I could drive it flat out all of the time and stay legal. Much more fun than the frustration of a really fast car you can't use anywhere near it's potential. Twizy would be a great toy.
I've kind of had my eye on a G-Wiz lately, partly because there's a guy who lives somewhere between my home and work and drives one, which really brought it into focus. You mention the improvements of the second generation; I did read on Wikipedia that a third generation does exist, with further tweaks and most importantly, an upgrade to lithium batteries. I don't know how many there are in the UK, if they were even available over here, but that would be the one I'd aim for.
Back in 2014, there was a G wiz (known in India as Mahindra Reva), which used to take the same path I took to school. It did fascinate people, but didn't look out of place in the city traffic. The other ones in this video probably do.
@@ArpanMukhopadhyay93 Mahindra owns it now, few years back i heard they're bringing it back with a range of different class of scooters and qudracycles. But then they used the funds in housekeeping and later started classic legends so the Reva brand got shelved
When the Ami gets old (and cheap) I will own and modify one (I live in France). They are resonably popular - I live up at 1000m above see level and some of the neighbours have them! There is talk of a higher powered version, current one has the very low top speed to fit into a certain car class in France - the Chassis is capable of quite a lot more.
I will choose the Twizy simply because I had one since new in 2016 with more than 40,000 miles and in the summer on hot days without the windows it's really fun. You also forgot to mention the rear wheel drive and when you tune your Twizy like I did with 100 Newton metric torque , it is really really fun to drive with a top speed of 60 / 65 mph. The mapping also increases the regenerative braking and increases mileage when driven carefully... And it is completely legal.
A certain amount of “quickness” is required even in the city. Unless you prefer not being able to make it from one light to the next before it turns yellow.
@@AutumnWind92 An interesting question as regardless of an objects mass or potential for damage it may be the cause of an accident because it wasn’t being operated properly.
I'd love to say 'Ami' and if all I did was to drive to the station and Tesco (which is close to the station) then it would be fine. But I think I could get to the next town (and choice of supermarket) by backroads in a Twizy without being a dangerous roadblock. So that would get my nod.
The Twizy is awesome! I had one for nearly 2 years. So much fun to drive especially with a tuning kit. Yes it's not practical, it has no windows and it can't be locked but that just makes it even more quirky. I found all sorts in my Twizy of a morning, leaves, animals and even snow. Just be prepared for the constant attention :)
Rewa came with G-Wizz around early 2000 when no other car/bike manufacturers even dreamt of having one in their portfolio. For being a pioneer in getting into the then niche market I will vote for G-Wizz if it comes out with a Lithium battery.
Daechang Danigo. The Korean car brand was not shown... It has power indicators, mileage on one charge and acceleration dynamics are very good! :) 15 kilowatts of engine power..
The Twizy would be great if It had a higher top speed, longer range & full, sealed doors as standard. The current Twizy is more or less a concept car 10 years out of date.
The first car I owned was a Citroen Ami 8 Estate - basically a 2CV with a lot more carrying capacity. (Simple, reliable and cheap to run). I'm now 70 and thinking about what I need for personal transport to replace my present 12 year old Daihatsu Sirion (Simple, reliable (it is a Toyota after all) and cheap to run). For distances, there are hire cars and trains but it looks like I'll be using a Citroen Ami again everyday around the city. (Simple, reliable and cheap to run). Why should I pay £10s of thousands more to drag around empty seats to get me, and occasionally a passenger, dry to shops, doctor, dentist, vet (2 cats) etc. In the city, I have no reason to exceed 30 mph and crazy acceleration will only save me, at most, a few seconds on any journey. As a scientist/engineer, I've spent my life dealing in using/producing simple, cost-effective design solutions to problems. Why would I change now?
I would take the Ami... It is the slowest but has the best design, space and price for what it is. And i belive it shouldn't be very hard to tuning it with a little more power...
@@madeiraislander Just joking off cars for a laugh, I would like to have an AMI too but there are way better and similar alternatives that I have in mind
I kinda like the look and room of the Ami, The 28 mph speed limit is the only thing holding me back to be honest, especially in a national speed limit area.
Even in a 40mph limit going 28mph someone is probably going to ram you off the road thinking you're just being an ashole and holding everyone up. Some people actually believe going slower is more dangerous!
@gilburton you can't get very far in the UK without leaving a 30mph limit. I know I had a moped for a year. Its a bit like how sooner or later you come across roads with no footpath.
I live in a village and I really want to replace my 125cc petrol scooter with an electric one, but electric bikes and quadricycles are mainly aimed at city commuters who rarely get over 50mph. If you want to drive something electric that goes fast, you'll need a dang car.
That Micro Electric I have seen actually. A red one with 2 pensioners in it drove past me yesterday. And since it is legally defined in the same way as my 50cc scooter, I should not be able to overtake them, but since my scooter is *cough* legal *cough* I overtook them fast as heck, and the man driving had the biggest grin
Just waiting for my Ami delivery from Italy. Bought after analysing my vehicle journeys and figured out it should do 85% of them adequately and with less impact than driving the 5-seater 400 BHP 2,300 kg EV panzerwagen that I currently use. Plus it is the cutest of the line-up. 28 mph on an urban 40 mph zone is a non-issue imo - its a speed limit not a requirement and most of these zones are dual carriageways so do please feel free to pass me!
Agreed, most of the higher speed roads in "urban" areas I've seen are either pretty quiet, or have multiple lanes. You can overtake me safely, and it's not like I'm going to start racing you 😂
Watched a TH-cam video about a company in Las Vegas already hacking the electronic governor limiting the speed on Citroen Amis. They had an Ami doing almost twice the specified speed. Only a matter of time before there are power and speed upgrades available for Amis. Personally, I wouldn't want to double the speed, but a 20% upgrade would be welcome. I'm getting one anyway.
@@ianworley8169 Citroën may offer those based on local laws, but in France one specification for quadricycles to remain in the specific "not a car" bracket they exist in is max speed. Thus Citroën won't be able to offer a speed upgrade in France unless (like Renault did with the Tweezy which have two versions) they upgrade the Ami to be in compliance with regular car regulations. And given the price bracket of the AMI they may not do it at all. And if you're limited to 50 kph, why would you want a bigger power/range update? Now if regulations are different where you live, you may change the speed yourself without breaking the law or not get in trouble with insurances?
I had rented a Twizy for 3 days in Bulgaria and covered about 150 (!!) km in it. It's absolutely ridiculous. The potholes were the biggest problem, but on nice roads this flies. Handling and cornering is genuinely sports car like and on light dirt its excellent fun doing burnouts. Tip: driving economically ≠ driving slowly. Taking the speed from a descent to climb a hill is essential to get a range of 50 miles when driving at the speed limit (and above) and definitely possible. Also, driving 80km/h an hour feels like 200 in a normal car. So yeah..
I'm Bulgarian and I wouldn't risk driving on our roads with such tiny tires. That's asking for trouble... Main roads are fine, you can blast down those at 120+ kmh, but the rural roads are a nightmare. I've broken the front splitter on my E-class in a pothole once. Not fun. Haven't popped any tires yet. Best keep your speed down, eyes open and plan ahead.
@@Megadriver Potholes are the worst. Delivered someone to Sofia Airport. Even in the parking INSIDE there were holes. Drove the Twizy from Варна to Балчик (and a bit further). Most of the road was ok. But a rough ride for sure. A friend broke his rear axle (C Class) in Shumen.
I'm wondering if the Ami is MECHANICALLY capable of doing more than 29 mph (= 45 km/h). In France, light quadricycles are like scooters : limited to 45 km/h, sometimes electronically or just even with the equivalent of a wedge under the accelerator pedal. I remember the cool kids in high-school there, modifying petrol scooters to get up to 70 km/h. But with different regulation (for example in the UK), maybe Citroën would decide to ditch the limitor ? Still, it does not accelerate as quickly as the Twizy, your video made it very clear. I'd still get an Ami, out of these four, if I were to buy one (it's not even a thing for me, light quadricycles are just non-existing here in Canada, although I wish it was different and find it very relevant for city cores or even short distance trips on suburban straods limited to 50 km/h anyways). It's cheap to buy and easy to charge at home, and your reporting of its interior space, fussless design and adequately responsive steering sounds better to my ear than winning a drag race with it. Who cares about longitudinal G-force in such a tiny thing ?
From what I've seen elsewhere, the Citroen Ami is very hackable - the motor control software nerfs the acceleration and top speed, so that can be modified and the motor potentially over volted to up the top speed. A bit of effort and I reckon you can get ~80 out of it.
@@virdiid8621 Not a long distance car. Hacked, its fine for moderate speed roads and the left hand lane of UK motorways/carriageways. Ideal for short distance commuting.
Well, it is quite a feat that the G-Wiz from India was sold 20 years ago, considering the economy of India itself was opened up to the rest of the world exactly 30 years ago. It is sad to see what Mahindra did with all the technology they took over from Maini (the manufacturer of G-Wiz) and left the G-Wiz to die.
I owned a Twizy for 8 years. You can buy a Powerbox that transforms the performance. It increases the torque by 76% and increases the Top Speed to 65mph Standard compared to a Twizy fitted with a Powerbox is chalk and cheese. It would have won this race easily with a Powerbox fitted.
I wish the US had a quadricycle allowance. Unfortunately this is covered under ATV/UTV laws and they vary widely by state. The only way they could be legal in the US is to be three wheelers under the new autocycle laws that Elio Motors lobbied for to get helmet laws changed for enclosed motorbikes as being buckled in with a helmet is more dangerous as it adds weight to the unrestrained head (see HANS device). I like the center driving position of the Twizy of this group- gives it a tiny McLaren F1 feel. Lol.
The correct answer is of course “...and a Twizy”, as in a Zoe and a Twizy, or a Leaf and a Twizy, or any of the hundreds of EVs now available... and a Twizy.
My coice out of these quadcycles would be the Citroen AMI. Here in Greece I is sold for around 6.000 euros. Of course it is recommended strictly for intercity commuting with caution at intersections!
@@phillipsmiley5930 no, but you'll be happy to drive an AMI during 4 years for 29.99 euros per month and give it back after 4 years, when the battery is nearly dead. Next step you hire an AMI II.
I think that the price point of the Ami is understated. yes, it is by just about any measure below the others, but it is also just about half the price cash than anything else. And for someone in the city, all of the other things (like top speed) are so much less of a thing
You should do this again with the artificial limits disabled. Twizy can go over 100kph and accelerate like a rocket if limits are disabled. (Disabling it voids your car license though!)
I was in Paris only a few weeks ago and through one of my many cousins who live in France who just happens to be a police commissioner,he was able to get me an Ami just for a couple of hours to try out.No fancy frills or fuss with it,it just does what it says on the tin it does & it is fun to drive.Yep,28mph is not fast in the big scheme of speed but the average speed in Paris is 21mph and similar in London.Easy to park up and was able to do a three point turn in my driving lane without needing to cross over the line to the other side.Unlike the other three they tried out,the Ami doesn't have a traditional dashboard with a dial. What you do is download the Ami app onto your smart phone then when you step into the vehicle, just slot your phone into the gap behind the wheel and the screen opens up & becomes the dashboard. When you're finished your drive, take the phone out. There's a lot of plastics inside the vehicle but its all recycled plastics. The only thing it doesn't have is a rear view mirror and it is disconcerting to begin with because your eyes turn to the space where one would be in a conventional vehicle but your brain is a clever thing,it realises it & quickly re adapts itself on you being able to overcome that.I do hope Citroen decide to sell it in the UK because it could do really well here as it ticks all the boxes for a small urban electric vehicle.Out of ten,I'll give it nearly a nine.Overall as I said at the beginning it is fun to drive
The company who made Reva aka G-Wiz(Outside India) was later acquired by 'Mahindra&Mahindra'. The came out with a much more advanced version called e2O(Pronounced as E-two-O). This was more car like and less like a quadricycle. Since you guys included the Renault Twizy, you should have opted for that.
Mahindra acquired Reva(G wiz) and literally killed the iconic brand. I remember I used to laugh at them Everytime I see them in the busy Bangalore traffic. But, they were kind of a pioneer in the EV game now that I realize.
A decade ago myself as a school boy it was interesting to see this on road due to its unique look, sound etc. The fact that it is powered by battery made it much interesting compared to others and also it used to appear on roads very rarely. Even today it is running on Bengaluru's streets that can be seen very rarely.
Mahindra did launched few versions of Reva one of colleague had one. That vehicle was low on power and can't do much with the range anxiety but cost nothing to maintain and operate (used to charge it with charger at office). Interior was fairly good. I think the reason why it failed was price, it costed around 8 lakh and during that time you could get an Scorpio for that price. Further range anxiety and misconceptions about electric car did impact the sale. I would say a good city car but at wrong time.
Have the twizy its actually really good. but for an 12 jear old design renault could have improved the range to a 10 or 12 kw battery and the onboard charger for type 2 charging.
@@michaelcarney6280 Jes i would recommend it. the pros in short , small battery so low charging cost if wallplug, range is ok for the vehicle but the chargetime is 1hour of 1/3 of the battery so max 3 hours. the cons the crappy standart seat it sucks but you can change it with a comfortable smart seat, as i said 3 hours charge time , try not to go over potholes ^^ , some parts like the charge flap are pretty easy to break, and if you let it weeks without moving dont put the parking break on . If you get yourself a twizy dobt take the renault windows theyr crap there are good ones from south korea. All together its a sweet gokart with enough range and very cheap vehicle to use everyday and you can park this everywhere

2:35 We have a couple of these cars in our EV repairshop. and I can say that among the Chinese micro cars, it is one of the best that has been imported to the Czech Republic. it has a lot of variations, a two-seater version (the one in the video), a four-seater version and even a small box truck version. we made improvements to them to increase range and efficiency. and some could travel up to 250km on a single charge. I drive one and I'm completely happy with it Edit: and also, in our country it is not called micro electric but VXT or ARI (it depends on which dealer you buy the car) but the original Chinese name is Jia yuan
@@DrJkll We remade the wiring that leads to the engine because its too long and non-efficent. We also add BMS for the lead batteries and build custom lithium bateries up to 16Kwh in the 2 seater version and up to 20kwh in the box truck version.
Very good comparison. These "Cars" are typical obsolete urban developments as their spectrum is a modern rivalry to public transport. The Twizzy is the only quadricycle that can be seen operating quite acceptably fast on country roads in our hillside landscape. What I would prefer is an Ami that reaches about 50 Mph. It would be quite a good, minimized transport medium for short daily routes between a countryside home and the urban working place or park and ride. Presently one can observe nearly one new product like these every two months. Therefore, I would be happy, If you showed this format in a i.e. four monthly cycle to include new models.
I'm driving a twizy for five years now. I'm still completely in love with it. The cargo version. Its two tones purple wrapped, goes 97km/h, and has a giant boom box system. 😂 NO windows. I can't even drive a normal car anymore without the windows down. It's a head turer. I'm 51 😂
I can see myself in a Renault Twizy, if they improved the doors and windows and made it properly weather-proof. I can also see myself in a Citroën Ami, if they gave it a little more power.
i do like the idea of the Ami being introduced to the UK however i believe that however they are used; you should hold a Provisional License to do so, these cost around £40, are a useful form of identification, and you must be at least 15 years and 9 months old to own one. i believe that if you meet the criteria to own a provisional license, you should be allowed to drive an Ami. think of it as a ‘step-up’ from a pushbike or e-scooter, and a more ‘comfortable’ alternative to a 50cc/electric moped. perhaps for usage on the road, insurance should work similarly to how it currently does for provisional license drivers. you should also be required to take a 1 day crash course, like a CBT for example.
Doug Re-VOLT-a was born for this race ha! And the Renault Twizy’s plate “KLIO WAT” is so clever! This was a very entertaining video, much love from Texas!
I'll go for the Twizy any day.......! For that acceleration test....... Any Twizy-owner with respect for himself would have installed a PowerBox, so...... Do that test again with a PowerBox installed please :-) (It'll do 0-30mph in 4 sec. with the PowerBox installed) Yes.....I'm bias.... I own a Twizy...... And i love It..... Renault claims on their homepage that It's comfortable....... It's not.... :-) The Twizy Is stiff as a board, and you'll feel any uneven surface you drive on... Course gravel roads Is like a free trip to a massage studio........(If you don't slow down). If you're looking for a soft and comfy (boring) ride, the Twizy Is not for you... But If you're looking for a street legal go-cart-like entertainment machine with 4 wheels... ......well, go for a Twizy...
That's a matter of taste, the Ami concept car looks nice if you are still into Playmobils, the production car is not as fancy as the concept car, no production model ever is, but it's good and nice enough for most occasional or regular city-only drivers, and more importantly, very affordable. You can even rent it by the minute, like a bicycle, for 26 cents!
I've been watching developments in this space for years, and the Ami is kind of a new take on it that I quite like. I don't like the seating position of the Renault, or the fact that it doesn't come with doors! But for home-to-train and train-to-home commuter, it's getting there. I think it would need to see another 10 mph in top speed to make one feel a little less like a sitting duck, but then perhaps that would change the overall dynamics vis a vis braking and handling so much that it would become a more expensive proposition. But so far, so good.
For my usual driving when I lived in Britain, the Twizy looks pretty good. The Ami is just too slow to be safe. Where i lived, the roads were 30mph and 40mph. Now I gether the 30mph has dropped to 25mph.
Honestly this should be available as a “city bike” or carshare service in cities, and larger streets or even cars should be removed to a point. Imagine you have to go across town, you get your bags or what ever, book an Ami and go. Less traffic, cheap transportation and eventually no one will use a car to get around. Great alternative to a bike! Also id choose the Ami, cheap and looks most thought through of all.
Ami for me, its not the speed that counts but how it is packaged and designed for everyday use, its a town vehicle plain and simple, why pay 11k when you can pay 6k to get A to B.
Unbridled, the Twizy leash outperforms the ME. It is 14.7 kW versus 7.5 kW, 473 kg versus 518 kg, and reaches 100 km/h. It's also lower, and its chassis allows for sporty driving. All this at a lower cost, thanks to a smaller battery. Its only shortcoming is that the doors have no windows (but third-party solutions do exist).
Which of these beasts would you be taking home? Ami, Twizy, G-Wiz, or Micro Electric?? 🤔
The old G-Wiz still running without much problems after years, can't guarantee that with others.
I wouldn’t but if it was a case of which one would I rent once I’d got to my destination city as in London then it would be the Citroen Ami particularly if it’s raining and a Boris bike wasn’t a desirable option. Now just for city councils to sort out the parking and charging infrastructure

When the Ami gets old (and cheap) I will own and modify one (I live in France). They are resonably popular - I live up at 1000m above see level and some of the neighbours have them!

The Twizy is awesome! I had one for nearly 2 years. So much fun to drive especially with a tuning kit.
Twizy all the way! For just £400 you can increase power by 50% (13kW to 18kW). It's a blast in town!
I would take the Ami... It is the slowest but has the best design, space and price for what it is. And i belive it shouldn't be very hard to tuning it with a little more power...

That and no air conditioning
I live in a village and I really want to replace my 125cc petrol scooter with an electric one, but electric bikes and quadricycles are mainly aimed at city commuters who rarely get over 50mph. If you want to drive something electric that goes fast, you'll need a dang car.

For me, Citroën Ami is the most serious vehicle of the video, it got a real car frame, technical and interior design choices are smarter
Just waiting for my Ami delivery from Italy. Bought after analysing my vehicle journeys and figured out it should do 85% of them adequately and with less impact than driving the 5-seater 400 BHP 2,300 kg EV panzerwagen that I currently use. I’d have the Citroen Ami over all of the others but it would be a better package if it’s top speed was closer to 40mph.
I agree with you the speed needs to be a bit faster!
So yeah..
Btw: Just everyone stares and smiles at (ot better with) you.
I freaking love the little Ami,
As a city runabout it's perfect.
Exactly what some people need the most for their local shopping.
They can do about 72-74 kph
Citroën Ami: Lorry magnet. Brillant analogy
From what I've seen elsewhere, the Citroen Ami is very hackable - the motor control software nerfs the acceleration and top speed, so that can be modified and the motor potentially over volted to up the top speed. A bit of effort and I reckon you can get ~80 out of it.
Won't it overheat?
@@virdiid8621 Not a long distance car. Hacked, its fine for moderate speed roads and the left hand lane of UK motorways/carriageways. Ideal for short distance commuting.
Well, it is quite a feat that the G-Wiz from India was sold 20 years ago, considering the economy of India itself was opened up to the rest of the world exactly 30 years ago. It is sad to see what Mahindra did with all the technology they took over from Maini (the manufacturer of G-Wiz) and left the G-Wiz to die.

It would have won this race easily with a Powerbox fitted.
I would buy the Citroën Ami. Cute, spacious, colourful.
Despite the slow speed, I'm sort of in love with the Ami.
Lol.
Perhaps a bit embarassing (for Mazda) to think a cheapo quadricycle like the Micro Electric almost matches the range of Mazda's only EV.
A Twizy on an open country road at night from behind looks like a red cyclops. A very static, dangerous cyclops.
In the city it has cred.

Further range anxiety and misconceptions about electric car did impact the sale.

i do like the idea of the Ami being introduced to the UK however i believe that however they are used; you should hold a Provisional License to do so, these cost around £40, are a useful form of identification, and you must be at least 15 years and 9 months old to own one. i believe that if you meet the criteria to own a provisional license, you should be allowed to drive an Ami. think of it as a ‘step-up’ from a pushbike or e-scooter, and a more ‘comfortable’ alternative to a 50cc/electric moped. perhaps for usage on the road, insurance should work similarly to how it currently does for provisional license drivers. you should also be required to take a 1 day crash course, like a CBT for example.

That's a matter of taste, the Ami concept car looks nice if you are still into Playmobils, the production car is not as fancy as the concept car, no production model ever is, but it's good and nice enough for most occasional or regular city-only drivers, and more importantly, very affordable.

The Ami would be my choice to go with my Ami 8 from 1978 .
They could test the new Brazilian electric truck, the VW E-Delivery.
The Ami looks really good, I like the interior. But I would go with the Twizy, that's the one for me!
At this price point for me I'd buy a dacia sandero or a second hand last gen corsa.
