    I spent most of this video in tears, we used to have a place in the valley 10 St Andrew,s Ave. My dads moms family were one of the first 4 families (Van Der Riet)who built fishing cottages there even before it was a village. They talked the local farm owner( Naas Bernado) to let them stay at first camping, later cottages. You past their house as you drove to the turnabout at the lagoon. The lagoon front houses are called the syndicate. There is alot of history there. But with time things always change. The river we called coke river( the colour) caused by the tannins in the water. I could talk about out experiences going back to my dads childhood he is 83 this year. I,m 52 . I miss living there thankyou for the drive through this morning I,ve been looking forward to this video. P,s the beach is a little over two kilometers long, on the east side is the point, with a large cave in it( if you look carefully you see its entrance. The lagoon is one of the few that no motorized boats or craft may be used on. Get home safely

      I know you're so intensely familiar with the area and I can feel how emotional it still makes you to 'see' it. It was our first time and I can only imagine that it was even more beautiful back in the day with only a few cottages around. The natural beauty there is almost overwhelming and it's just forest and ocean as far as the eye can see. Interesting name that, the Coke River, I love it! Thank you for being on this journey with us and for imparting some of your extensive knowledge of the area, it is much appreciated. We love having you along for the ride. 😊🚗

      Paradise is a good word for this place. It is so beautiful and green and quite a contrast to the N2 just a few kilometres away. We're glad we got to see it and happy that you enjoyed it too! 🌳🌊

    I am from Cape Town and I had so much fun travelling South Africa with both of you. I love the way you go from small town to small town, such fantastic history all over our country, you just got to stop and smell the roses.

      We're so glad to hear you enjoy travelling with us. We waited a long time to be tourists in our own country and we want to pack in and see as much as we can in every week we get to travel. Rest assured though, there are many chilled moments off-camera and the four weeks in-between when we're supposed to work, we take it super easy. Thank you for being along for the ride! 😁🚗

      A town I would recommend exploring is Gariep, such an amazing town to explore, never mind exploring around the dam (that alone will keep you busy for a few hours). The town of Gariep is a great town to visit for a day trip.

    Was there the last time in 1987. It's paradise. I knew a guy who had grown up there; it must have been bliss. Why the No Swimming sign? It is a sad moment when your journeys end, it means we have to stay home. We only travel when you do. See, we can behave. You never noticed us on the rear seat.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is such a pristine area and pretty as a picture. I have no idea why one isn't allowed to swim there, I would imagine rip currents may be a possible cause. 🤷‍♂️ You were remarkably well-behaved on this trip, I must agree! 😁🚗 But you better get ready, we're leaving for the next one tomorrow!

    Brings back happy memories of travels when I was little. Grootrivier always reminds me of the time we stopped just there for a picnic, and I was running all over the place the way kids do. Just before I got in the car, my mom noticed I had trodden in a huge turd which was clinging to my shoe. So it was shoe off and getting a thorough wash in the Groot Rivier!

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      😁 What a great memory that is! I can actually see your mom washing your shoe in the Groot River, she must not have been amused! It's funny that you would mention that you stopped there for a picnic. Just before we crossed the river, we saw a group of people having a birthday picnic, complete with balloons and decorations and everything. That was quite fun to see and I'm always happy to see people enjoying themselves in nature, as long as they don't leave any trace behind. 🌳🎈

    Alittle info if you don't already now ...The colour of the water is from the leaves , the same as tea ...it's called Tannin

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the info, I suspected the leaves had something to do with the colour, but had no idea it was called tannin. I also thought it originated in the mountains, so appreciate the clarification. 🍂🍁

      @DustBugsTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wowzer! 🥶 You're in desperate need of some SA sun if you ask me! 😁☀️ We really do have a lot of fun together and the main reason for that is that we love and enjoy the little things in life and on our travels. They bring us the greatest joy. We so appreciate you travelling along with the two of us! 🚗 Stay safe and warm!

    we were fortunate to sneak into the Bloukrans Pass (c2020) with my brother who lives in the area. Absolutely stunning, very lonely, quiet, the baboons held sway all over the place. Just magnificently wild!

      @DustBugsTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You were so lucky, that sounds awesome! I would've loved to have driven that pass. Another viewer said we should've ignored the closure signs, but I didn't want to be stuck and turn around. Something I may consider next time though. 😁🚗

  • @franspistorius1886
    @franspistorius1886 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Curtis,
    Thanks again for this and other brilliant episodes. I particularly enjoyed this one because it awakens good memories.
    Back in the day when we lived in SA, we used to go to Nature’s Valley for the April holidays. My children moved loads of sand on all of those beaches shown on your video.
    As per a previous comment, there is lots of history.
    We stayed near the shop where you bought the coke when Sonia was so thirsty (poor lady).
    I used to train for the Two Oceans and Comrades on those passes with baboons support cheering me on. The bird sound was incredible and made the training easier.
    Pity you did not have more time, on the western side is a beautiful footpath along the rocks leading to the Salt River mouth with its own spectacular beach. On the way there, one goes past a place that we called Klippies Strand.
    I can tell you lots more but this is enough for now.
    Keep up the good work, you are doing a fantastic job by bringing so much of SA into our homes. During those days we did not have the equipment to capture it in the way you two are doing it.
    All I can say is a massive Thank You and ignore the negatives, tell those ones to close the door from the outside.
    Someone else mentioned the Otter Trail is ending in Natures, that is true. You can actually see the path coming down along the eastern rocks.
    Frans.

      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello again! Thank you, I'm glad to hear you're still enjoying our videos. I appreciate you sharing your memories of this area, which is truly spectacularly beautiful! You training with the baboons and birds as spectactors is a standout for me, love it! Sonia has a major knee issue, so that greatly limits what we get to see since she is unable to navigate uneven surfaces or stairs successfuly and I'm not keen to leave her alone in the vehicle and wander off too far. All good though, since ours are experiences we treasure only because we share them with each other. I don't mind the negative comments at all and will continue to respond to each one with courtesy and respect since those are two values both of us highly cherish. We realise we're not everyone's cup of tea and that it totally fine with us! As long as there are folks like you who enjoy what we do, that's really all that counts! 👌🏻 Thanks for watching, it's fun having you on board! 🤩🚗

    Nature's Valley is the end of the Otter Trail and start of the Tsistikamma Trail. You could basically do a 15 day hike when visiting Knysna and surrounds, start the Otter Trail, then back track with Tsitsikamma, and then journey off to the Outeniqua. The end of the Otter has an amazing walk along some cliffs, you get to see some really amazing King Proteas, and the bird life...wow...

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds amazing! The natural beauty in this area is insane, so I can only imagine how spectacular it must be to be immersed in it during a long hike. Sadly our explorations will continue to be by vehicle for the most part. 🚗🌳 Unless some orthopaedic surgeon can fix my darling wife's knee, which hasn't happened yet, despite several attempts.
