    I was at the stream when you fought Daidara Bocchi and when you defeated it it spoke and thanked you for giving it peace, even if it was the peace of the grave, this makes me think that the Daidara Bocchi you fought had something corrupting it. Maybe Otakemaru was controlling it too. Actually, Otakemaru might very well be the cause of all the normally benevolent Yokai acting completely out of character, they might be influenced by him in some way. If Otakemaru was able to corrupt all the normally peaceful Yokai then that would explain why when you defeat a Yokai and it drops its Soul Core you need to purify it before you can use it, you need to purify the corruption from Otakemaru so it won’t corrupt you too.

    "The only difference between a Kami and a Yokai in Shinto is whether or not they are properly enshrined and worshiped." In this case are Kapa now Kami? After all they now have shrines and are generally "worshiped" by the masses via the things like being "protectors of rivers" via the adds to pick up litter.

    • @PhoenixofEclipse
      @PhoenixofEclipse 4 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Loron20 in one if his live-streams he stated some kappa are praised as kami. That said, it’s more an individual basis rather than a species thing. A kappa praised is a kami, one feared or despised and left unpraised is a youkai.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      The short answer is YES! Same as one of most worshiped Kami in Japan is one who is regularly a villain in many anime* (before he atoned). That also apply to most cases in the game. Vile Yo-Kay are result of Amarita poisoning, not that they are vile themselves (usually). There is also clear connection between protagonist Yo-Kai form and his guardian spirit.

    I love how Kami and Yokai are nuanced and have variety.
    Yokai can be benevolent and chill or malevolent and brutal, while Kami are merely worshiped/revered but still capable of being anywhere on the spectrum between malevolent and benevolent. Heck, a lot of malevolent yokai make sense in their historical context. Throw away your shears, knives, and sewing needles before they're completely unusable, thus wasting the iron that went into making them? Yeah, the yokai that possess them will love shedding your blood as payment for your thoughtlessness.

      @Stolanis 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sekibanki is what is known as a 'nukekubi' (lit. 'missing neck'), similar to but different from rokurokubi. The nukekubi is often depicted as being more violent than its cousin: in addition to the drinking of lantern oil mentioned in the video, the nukekubi supposedly had vampiric tendencies and would float around town as a disembodied head trying to find victims to gorge on their blood. At sunrise the head would return to its body and the owner unaware of what happened the previous night.
      As far as I was able to see upon doing a cursory search there are no nukekubi that are aware of their condition and are able to spawn multiple floating heads, so Sekibanki is almost certainly an adaptation of the folklore - especially because it seems as though she switches between being a nukekubi and a rokurokubi when it is convenient for her.

    • @BlueWokou
      @BlueWokou 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Stolanis Sekibanki's technically representative of not just the rokurokubi and nukekubi, but also, as her theme song would suggest, a dullahan. But, in every bit of Touhou canon I've seen(Which does exclude an amount of the manga, to be fair), she's called a rokurokubi, and most people recognize her as being such. I know she's not a 100% true version of one.

      No, it’s very much different gameplay-wise. It borrows all the major mechanics like Estus, Bonfire, leave souls behind if you die. BUT the gameplay is vastly different. Enemies will most likely kill you in 1-3 hits while you do wet noodle damage...unless you break the game, which is surprisingly easy to do.

    I got this game before quarantine became so strict and I gotta say I really do love this game (currently playing it on my channel). It’s combat for a soulslike is so darn good and addictive. All the weapons are fun to use (Swichglaive being my favorite behind Kusarigama). The Yokai in this game are perhaps the best designed monsters I’ve ever seen and I always take the time to go read their bios in the hut to read about the mythology surrounding them. It’s really got me interested and the fact a game makes me want research the yokai outside the game to appreciate the amount of effort the devs put into making these monsters as faithful (with some creative liberties like how you pointed out in this video) to their role in Japanese mythology really says how good this game is. Also my favorite yokai and boss from this game is the Yatsu-No-Kami.

    I do want to point out that some of the yokai we fight have been turned berserk by either bad people or because of the hatred and conflict created by the war in the game. Hell, the kamaitachi we fight early on was originally a friendly yokai who went berserk and our mission is to calm it down.
    I also want to point out that when you absorb the soul cores of many of the enemies in the game you sometimes get dialogue from them, and most tend to talk to you with a much friendlier tone than there aggressive nature in game would suggest (with some exceptions), possibly hinting that most of them have also been corrupted by the conflict created by the war.

    well...there is the Namahage and Magatsu Warriors who hit like a truck and are tougher to deal with compared to the Rokurokubi who is actually pretty slow and predictable compared to the other two I mentioned. The hardest regular enemy (for me at least) is the Magatsu Warrior hands down. I hated them even more in the 1st Nioh, but now that it has attacks we can actually counter, it isn't as bad as it was in Nioh 1. But hey, that's just my opinion...😗

    I can see these benevolent yokais become malevolent after being mistreated. Take the Biwa Boku Boku as an example: what if it was born from a Biwa that was poorly handled by a owner who didn’t properly maintain it and only used to make loud noises to annoy people then actually play songs? It could totally become scornful to the point of killing its owner and use their corpse to play it properly.

  • @AlrauneDollmind

    Tip for fighting the Rokurokubi: if you can carefully line up a bow or a gun shot on its face as it sways around, you'll destroy all its Ki and down it in one hit. If you're quick enough you can then run up to its downed body and deal a Finishing Blow before it gets back up.
    Those things aren't too bad. Try and stay behind it as you fight, take a couple of swings and then get ready to back away before it retaliates.
    I feel like my #1 most feared and hated enemy in the game is the Kusarigama-wielding Yoki-- it feels as though there's no way to predict or avoid its swings, you're dead in three hits if it even nicks you and they're dodgy and nimble as heck on top of it. You pretty much just have to land a lucky hit on its horn with a vertical swing to hold any momentum in a fight with one, or rely on ninja tools (paralysis works pretty well).

    Where I don't remember seeing the Rokurokubi before the first dlc campaign of Nioh 1 it does make sense why there were "evil" there as they were soldiers for the warlord that campaign revolved around. Add in the fact that warlord's army openly had Yokai among it's ranks they would have no fear over that secret getting out among their comrades. Now the spitting fire and poison ya doesn't make to much sense though when you account for the more obscure detail of them drinking lantern oil the fire fits a little bit better as some oil still in their mouth being ignited by some set up with their teeth (either by tools or natural methods).
