The real question is why is Joe Gomez who has played at left back for Liverpool last season and was generally very good and proper solid not being looked at....instead Southgate picks his old buddy Trippier who has never played at left back before and was in the worst form as the season was ending.
It’s not really been a problem so far other then when attacking, Southgate somehow managed to get a clear and easy run to the Final again, he can’t fail with the luck he’s been given in all these tournaments

Trippier is a serious problem for us BC he is ending up so predictable that he's unable to play it forward. Tough for him that he also has no left winger. Walker on the left to get Trent on the right might be better?
I agree, play Saka left back, Gordon on the left, Palmer on the right, Mainoo alongside Rice, we really need to play quick, incisive football to open up Slovakia. Let's face it, they're not going to be attacking much.

Tyrick Mitchell has just had a terrific season for Palace. It was a ridiculous decision not to take him, made even stranger by the fact 4 of his Palace teammates were selected.

saka is left-footed but plays on the right, yes he played left-back a few times because Arsenal had a lot of injuries and had no one to play there but he is definitely not a left back he is not that great at tackling, good at attacking on the right wing but Cole Palmer needs his spot.

Walker is a RB though. Even if you count Saka as a LB and he gets forward it's essentially a 3 back anyway.
@@RJA In Europe, Pep has played Kyle Walker as a Centre Back. His pace enables him to intercept anyone breaking away. Also, he and John Stones would take it in turns, to receive the ball from the Keepers through and bring it into the opposition half, while, the rest of the forward line pressed.

If Saka at LB, he will overlap with his skill with the linkup with LW Gordon. Then at CAM put Foden so he can freely play his games, shooting/bring the ball forward. While at RW put Palmer. We all know he is good

@S.B.-qu5eu I'm not saying to do what the caller stated, but can understand his thinking for it. Will get forward, add width to the left side and is a better player then Trippier who was injured towards end of the season, and playing out of position himself.
I'd personally start Luke Shaw.
Alphonso Davies play lb and he is arguably better than Saka, aside of maybe shooting that's why Saka was moved up front because his shooting is decent

people missing the point. the point of having 26 players instead of the old 23 is that you can take a gamble or two on unfit players. the real question is why southgate doesnt bring another left back. even if shaw was fit to play and then he was on yellow card and needed to be replaced, trippier is still NOT the solution.

It seems obvious to go to 3 at the back Guehi-Stones-Walker and then Saka and Trent wing backs. This immediately solves the problem of no width on the left and gets Trippier out of the team.

Rich is out of his mind, why would you play Saka as left back totally out of position, strikes me as being an act of desperation, even to consider it. France played much harder teams ! England group was in one of the easiest groups. Gordon and show should start to give the left side life. If Show is not even fully fit he should start, the main risk is he might get injured and lose the whole tournament, so better than not starting at all. it is also a good warm up for him to play against Slovakia rather than some one like the Netherlands or Austria.

Reading the comments it seems most have missed my point.
Fans will jump on any bandwagon. Saka may have started out as a left back but has never been lauded for his defensive capabilities during his arsenal career. Now one suggestion has been made to put him at left back and everybody is lumping on. Again another simple solution to a complex problem. Happens all the time.

Whats the issue? We don't have a left back; Saka is a very replaceable right winger, so to keep him in the team and solve a problem position, he covers Lb (where he started out)

England with all their quality should not be setting up defensively! Attack is the best form of defence! If we play a high line and push them back it can work have faith! We need balance and our left side is non existent! Trippier plays there regularly but cannot really use his left foot!
