  • After days of criticism, England finally put in the sort of performance everyone expected of them against Slovenia. The only problem was that it started in the 89th minute. But with the nation finally getting a look at what an England team with Gordon, Palmer, and Mainoo can do, does Gareth Southgate have to start them in the knockouts? Adam Clery looks at the pros and... well, more pros.

One other thing I thought you’d touch on Adam - TAA came on at right back and started doing the inverted thing, creating overloads in the middle. That pulled Slovenia around and all of a sudden Palmer was one on one every time he was given the ball because they had to deal with our extra midfielder somehow.

I honestly wish he could be on the BBC as a pundit, it would do wonders for the game if kids were growing up having been exposed to this level of tactical insight. After the match yesterday Gary Neville mentioned that the sports journalists in Spain used to ask such challenging questions. If the footballing public are more informed about such things, this can only have a positive impact on the national game imho.

Our defensive record is good, but that's because for large parts of both the Serbia & Denmark game, we sat back in a low block, with everyone behind the ball and the opposition weren't good enough or didn't want to risk trying to break us down.
Against Slovenia, you saw how happy they were to get a draw. They didn't need to score and happily defended deep in numbers. But even when they did try to counter, England didn't commit enough players forward to ever be at risk.
The result? A strong defensive record, but offering little threat going forward, grinding out results instead. If Southgate used players in their best positions and maybe committed an extra player to the attack, we could be a much better team.

    • @abody499
      @abody499 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

the defence is very solid though and has had to face some tough opponents. other teams are good as well so for England to limit those teams to such meagre pickings is the kind of form that can win a tournament. When they have players like Gordon and Palmer able to come in, they will surely start making chances at the other end too. I think they could win this on the strength of their defence. They will have the penalties sorted. No one will miss.

    • @EPL_Scout
      @EPL_Scout 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@abody499 at least we haven't made any silly mistakes or gave penalties away like Portugal/France. But I still think our attacking output has suffered due to being over cautious. Whereas other teams have have created more chances and scored more goals, whilst still limiting their opponents.

One issue with the defence statistic: England have also been in the group with the whiffiest attacking teams in the tournament. Would it be so good had we played a Spain, Portugal or Germany in the group?
One thing I will say is your analysis is so logical (eg Bellingham drifting out onto the left with Trippier and Foden pretty much assures no running behind or stretching of the defence, rather than Gordon) that it makes it even more baffling how Southgate and the coaches are so slow to do anything to rectify.

So I guess my major question for you is with the changes with Gordon and Palmer coming on we also made a change at the back. Obviously we did look defensively sound (against teams that can't score) but I think theres a lot to talk about sticking Walker in LB and Trent on at RB. There had been a lot of complaints regarding Trippier affecting that left hand side because he doesn't have a left foot and always went inside to play a ball, so do you think that the setup at the back end of the game; a. had an impact, b. is better for England going forth, especially considering the flack that TAA has been getting, c. is there a better alternative with the squad we have that fixes the problems we've been having creating from defence?

Top video. I reckon, Southgate being a defender, the left back situation and defence has been his top priority. He would have been aware that going all out attack, but failing to get out of the group, would be unacceptable. I think England having been poor attack-wise might well be making other teams under-estimate us (Slovakian journo says England are 'there for the taking'), despite us having the best defence in the tournament.
So now we're into knockout football, I think it's the right time for a (not-so) surprise attack from England. Get Gordon, Mainoo and Palmer on, give Saka and maybe Bellingham and/or Foden a rest on the bench and get teams scared of us again.

I can't disagree with much that you've said. Many of the other teams have suffered a shock result, with Portugal being just the latest.
We finished top of our group, with no metatarsal injuries. That was the task, and we achieved it. And we achieved it playing at about 50% of our capabilities.
Southgate is obviously a very busy man, so I'll make this easy for him. Keep everything as it is, but introduce Gordon on the left wing of a midfield four of Gordon, Bellingham, Foden Saka, with Kane up front and Rice sitting behind, and in front of the same back four as we've seen in each of the matches.
Remind Kane that he's a striker, and needs to stay up front, even if only to hold up the ball while we regroup and regain shape. And tell him it's ok to lose your hair in your thirties. In the Slovenia post-match ITV interview, did you see how many times he smoothed his temple hair forwards to cover up the Male Pattern Baldness that's creeping in? Harry - Just do what Shearer did and shave it all off.
Remind Saka that he's a winger, and one of the best in the world. Remind him that Palmer would like to challenge for his position. Fine him £200 for every occasion in which he passes back, rather than turning and attacking their left back
When we're playing out of defence with Rice, involve Stones in the way Man City do. Involve Walker and Trippier and ask them to carry the ball, or simply remind Rice that he's one of the world's top midfielders, and that it's a good thing to carry the ball through the lines himself.
Do all that, and we'll win it. Guaranteed.

Here's an idea: Foden instructed to stay high and wide (basically cross/dribble wide and stretch the back line), Bellingham makes forward runs into the half space, Trippier moves inside to cover the space left by Bellingham (inverted wingback sitting as a DM), Rice shifts over to the right , Gallagher acts as a supportive waypoint/advanced playmaker, linking defence with attack. Saka cuts inside as a supporting striker, Walker/Trent overlaps, Kane stays high and plays like a poacher (minimal running required, focuses heavily on his finishing). Strong against counters and nobody stepping on anyone's toes.
Don't press the opposition back line, let them play out, then you have space to run into when you win the ball back.

Ok hear me out, heres how you fix the team, Put Joe Gomex left back and Kerien trippier right back. then you switch the wingers so Saka on the left and Foden on the right. that way in attack. then saka on his stronger left foot and tipper on his stronger right whipping in balls of Bellingham and Kane pull belligham and foden can both play in the half spaces cutting in on there stronger foots. Also, I think the interplay on Triper, trent and Foden rating and playing one-twos on the right would be very existing

I’m a Geordie but I’m not sure I’d play trippier over Walker. Having said that, I’m f he is playing his forte is putting beautiful balls into the box from the wing. Using him on the left more or less loses this whole thing

Loving these videos. I imagine you could go much further into the OPTA level stats, but it's pitched perfectly and logically. Really had a laugh at Rice's pass, map ffs! Is there a podcast? Assume you would be unlikely to appear on the TFS and the like!
Also - any thoughts on bringing Saka off for Palmer? It should have been Bellingham. At times it felt like Kane, Foden and Bellingham were all playing the number 10. So he then brings on a 4th number 10 - mental.

Not sure what Trippier is bringing on the left and Bellingham did not really add a lot of cohesion either being higher up the pitch.
He should be bold and go 3 at the back with Rice/Bellingham/Mainoo in front then Gordon/Foden/Palmer ahead and striker Kane/Watkins ahead: Probably Watkins with more energy to be honest at current performance.
Really impressed with Mainoo and Palmer. Gordon definitely added a left-foot to the left wing. Imho the problem with kane/saka is they're rigid players in the positions they play. England have to get the combinations and energy and cohesion going and I think more flexible players will end up serving the team better eg Mainoo and Palmer especially.
In effect Rice acts as a semi-fourth defender with his physical ability and Bellingham's rangy ability and all-round game works better deeper adding a body and Mainoo is rock solid with a lot of movement and passing too. Just seems to play better to England's strengths then throw in the attacking talent ahead...

I agree with your analysis, but one of the reasons England defense has looked better, is also because they have not done more to commit moving forward.
England has looked like a team playing for a draw in every game to me, and have really been about even with both Slovenia, Serbia and Denmark. So yeah if England can keep doing that and is good at penalties, they might go far. It is just not very inspiring football to watch as said, for more than maybe 2 or 3 minutes a game.
I think Rice, Bellingham and Kane is worn out, so I would probably not start them, but consider putting them in later in the game.

With such an easy path to the final, it would be a surprise if England does not make the final. If you cannot make it this time with this much look, in the easiest group, the easiest way through the tournament and even a 3rd placed opponent, than you never will. If Spain and Germany both go through, we will see the real final already in the quarter final.

Honestly, Southgate has messed up a little there is no doubting that BUT perhaps his thinking was coloured by the game against Finland which while understandable is silly if that is why we haven't seen Gordon, Palmer etc. Against Finland he gave different players a run out and they didn't do much BUT as everyone knows ALL of the players were more interested in not getting injured than they were in playing a friendly against Finland.
It' s hard not to critique his substitutions though as they often come too little too late, Mainhoo at half time was surprisingly bold for Southgate but then we had to wait till the game was almost over for Palmer and Gordon got a tiny cameo.
I think EVERYONE, or at least everyone who knows even the slightest thing about football is baffled by why he didn't play Bellingham and Rice together with Foden at 10 and Gordon on the left. AT LEAST ONCE in the group stages but no, same players with slight tweaks to a tactical setup that isnt working going forward on the attack.
I know everyone has shot down Wrighty's idea of Saka at left back but he has played there and was a first team starter in that position in the past, I find it so strange that he wasn't even tried out in that position considering the unbalance the team has. The problem Saka and Southgate now have is that Palmer looked amazing and electric on the ball and Saka, who I think most of us would agree has been an outstanding player for England, has been as effective as a paper umbrella. Maybe he is tired or something is effecting him but he only has to look at what happened to Stirling and that should be a wake up call, if indeed he needs one.
The other frustrating thing of course is that he has a squad of 26 players and yet plays the SAME formation and tactics with a few tweaks against every single team, so far.
I remember when he started the job he was innovative and would spring tactical surprises on the opposition, change formations, that train line in the box for corners BUT now it's like the belief is we are just that good we will play the way we want and let anyone try and beat us, BUT we're not a great Real Madrid team full of legendary players who can say that and do it.
We are a team which hasn't won anything at an international level since 1966 and lets be honest, IF, like back then most of our England team played in the same clubs like Utd, West Ham etc then maybe they would play better together and we would get a critical eye on their ability playing alongside other englishmen at club level BUT the truth is we have a LOT of amazingly talented players from other nations around our "Best" players and you have to question if indeed they are that good or are others making them look good.
What happened to Bellingham the Lion that roared in that first game while the rest of the team sat meakly back and were bullied by the giants around them. He now seems to have been culled and quitly sits among the rest of the team without a murmur let alone a roar and fronting up to giants.
I really do hope that Southgate gets his Russell Crowe moment and can stand in the middle of the arena one day and raise his arms aloft and cry out "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?"
Then I'm sure Emperor Gary can give the thumbs up or down to the cheers of the baying crowd of fans.......

I cannot believe Southgate played all the players who clearly needed a rest. 3 games in 9 days and a game that was important but not that important and he will keep playing them cause he’d never drop his stars now. Walker and trippier looked gassed. Stones is injury prone and just played 3 90s.. Saka, Kane, Bellingham all could have used the rest. Rice probably too. Esp after Southgate said they were struggling with fitness.
Why even have konsa and Gomez? Give Walker and trippier a break.

Of course we werent going to do well going forward with 3 RBs starting in the first two games. England desperately missing the overlap and driving runs on the left flank. Foden has a left foot but he just won't go out there to cross it in and Trippier has pretty much been the weakest link of this side so far from an attacking perspective. The minute Luke Shaw plays he will overlap and pull it back from the by line and pull defenders with him. Should have bought Chilwell who's struggled for form since being injured but has consistently been one of Chelsea's biggest threats along with James in recent years. Trippier is supposed to at least be good on set pieces and he hasnt even done that.
