    In my opinion, Victorinox SAKs are pretty underrated in the knife world today. They're just so useful and charming. Cool video.

    got my grandfathers swiss army knife he carried with him for over 30 years until he passed away. It's well loved and was full of grime and dirt, causing it to be really hard to open any of the tools. Can't believe how good the snap is still on the main blade, I must have seen him open it ten thousand times, and i've probably used it just as much.

    In Indiana where I live me and a few buds hit this knife show once a year.This one vender claimed to have SAKs that were one of a kind custom.So I ran into a guy that purchased a Customized Fieldmaster.All it was was a standard Fieldmaster with plus scales and he charged 3 times the price.I told him you have been had.I could do the same for less than 50 bucks.We went back and I called the guy out.While doing so others were telling him...I want my money back....or stop charging the price of one of a kind SAKs.So one kid went and got the manager of the meet and warned the guy to stop cheating/and lying to buyers.I haven't seen him around very much any more.I custom scale SAKs now....I make a few bucks but I don't charge a mint like that guy was doing.Great video Neil.I love my SAKs....and cant stop buying them.

    Great video! When I buy a used knife, it never really feels like my own, until I give it a thorough cleaning, (like you just did), and a sharpening. The only thing I do different is, after the hot rinse and wipe down, I rinse it with rubbing alcohol. That flushes out the water in the pivot area and evaporates faster. And after they have fresh oil, they have that new knife action, as yours did. Very satisfying when complete. Yup, I watched the whole video, I like this kind of stuff. Take care! 👍

    Good info here, thank you. I would suggest always use a vise or vise grips because you could be 95% on and it looks good but eventually grime sneaks in and in a year or less you'll be needing new scales. Socks may work but two wooden rulers or like that and buffer the teeth of the tool. Don't go too hard just enough to keep even pressure on each side.

    I have an Officier Suisse (the model with nail cleaner/file instead of the small blade) that I inherited from my late grandfather when he died i December. The old man was a gardener, and boy, have that thing seen some use. He must have used it to cut roots and root netting with it because the sides of the blade is extremely scratched.
    I have no idea how old it is, but it must be pretty old, ast the old man died at age 94.

    178 comments, someone may have mentioned this already, but there is better way to remove scales that are not already damaged. Use 2 rice heating pads, heated in the microwave for about a minute. Take them out, place one on a flat surface, place the SAK scale side on top, then place the 2nd rice heat pad on top of the upper scale. Give it 1-2 minutes (until the heat pads just barely start to cool) and then pry up like is shown in the video. The plastic becomes soft enough it comes up almost completely clean, where it can be used again with good pop-on.

    A trick I learned is when you get a Swiss army knife, take the scales off, then put a drop of super glue on each of the brass rivets. Then put the scale back on and now they are attached permanently, but not so much that you can't get them off if they crack or break.

    Just swapped the plastic sides around on my two, used a Stanley blade to carefully get in between the plastic and metal. I never liked how my XLT had the transparent dark red plastic sides when my normal Swiss Champ had the classic opaque red sides, also the Victorinox logo had somehow come out of the handle (ages ago) on the XLT. Looks miles better now with the "original" red sides, but on the XLT :)

    Nice video-good work. Victorinox SAK's are my #1 EDC Tool, always have at least one or two of them with me wherever I go - really have to be careful when going to the airport for a holiday trip.
    When cleaning them I start with some LiquiMoly LM40 (better than WD40) to get the metal powder out of the joints and using hot soapy water after that along with a small, medium soft paintbrush and cotton pipe-cleaners to get into all covert spots. After drying on a radiator for half an hour or so I re-oil all tools with camellia-oil - if you want to use mineral oil, make sure it's medical-grade (paraffinum liquidum), the technical-grade ones contain PAC, which cause cancer! To sharpen the scissors I finish by cutting through a piece of 800-grit sandpaper, folded over back-to-back, works best. I NEVER run a sharpening stone at the slightest angle against the flat backside - doing it your way you can cut cardboard, but get in trouble if using it on soft tissue !

    Also, I was afraid to leave the plastic caps on, and dunk it hot plain water with the blades opened for 30 minutes, I mostly did after I kind of used it on something very greasy, lately I just use a hot stream of water and hold in there for 3 to 5 minutes to wash away the gunk that might pile up, granted its new, but I hate putting my knives in bad care,

    Victorinox Swiss Army, does not make a Wood Carving knife that has two carving blades, a saw, and a large roughing blade. Blades that have 58 or better Rockwell hardness or 440 or better stainless steel. Just three slots (not sure what they are called) handles. that are rounded for comfort, with locking blades. Folded no more than 3 1/2 inches long. If all the carvers out there will unite and keep bugging Vicky about it, I am sure they will listen.

      Not so if your job is actually out in some field somewhere outdoors where you don't have the luxury of "shop" resources. Fix the equipment in the field where the jobsite actually is rather than bringing it back to the shop where it stays for a week or so before bringing it back to the jobsite.
      With a multi tool that's in your pocket some duct tape, and a little ingenuity you would be amazed at what you can get done. Trouble shoot the problem, move on to the next site. Sometimes the proper tool isn't accessible. JMHO.

      I've heard of Swiss Bianco from his channel but never checked his website, thanks for the advise! I just bought a Swisschamp and as soon as the scales come apart (if they do) I will surely buy some metal ones...

    I have an old Mountain Guide that I found 20 years ago. The cork screw is broken off but everything else is there. How do you sharpen the curved blade? Also, the scales are riveted on. Thanks, Steve.

    • @tonycanniffe2360
      @tonycanniffe2360 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d use a ceramic rod or rods Steve. The steel isn’t especially hard, so it should work ok. You could try a KME or other fixed angle system. Bit you’d need to tilt the stone so that only an edge of it is in contact - this is one way to deal with recurved blade sharpening when you have such a system.
      Lansky Turnbox has 4 rods and it is cheap. Also Spyderco Sharpmaker rods.

    Shouldnt the scissor be self sharpening? Sharpens when you use them cause of the materials they made them with.

    I appreciate the effort you've gone to, but 'fully restore' means something very different to me. I was expecting to see you dismantle the blades (this is what I am seeking to learn), but you didn't do this. I would describe your efforts as 'fully clean & partially restore'

    • @NeilTheKnifeGuy
      @NeilTheKnifeGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anyone needing to dismantle the knife to fix it is better off sending the tool back to the company. Very few people have the inclination to cut the rivets out to fix whatevers wrong with it.
      The rest is semantics
