You guys sure are a good team. Sharing, caring, cutting up with each other! Makes a person feal like they are right there with you, having fun! Excellent production.
Flite Test ROCKS you guys are the best. Your coverage of the RV Jet was great. I ordered the RV Jet combo from their site which contains RV Jet, Power system, OSD and GoPro Silver. It's a great combo at a great price.
I don't even own an RC plane (AR Drone doesn't count) and i love watching your videos. Your enthusiasm and knowledge of RC planes is fun to watch. Keep up the great work guys!
HI Flite Test, This was one off your best shows! I really enjoyed it. It was nice to see you all in person at the NEAT fair but I wish you would have brought the RV Jet! God Bless, Ron
Yes, CCTV/micro cameras is possible to point straight down. If you point a opro straight down it's wide angle lens would have almost a large part ocf the image covered by the PnT housing because of the wide angle of the lens. It's good that you mention that about the long wings in the manual. That should've been mentioned and I'll try to add that if we print another version of it.
Except the RVJET-kit you need motor, ESC, prop, batteries and TX/RX. The servos are already included in the main kit, both for the PnT and elevons. The power package is optional and includes motor, ESC, aluminium spinner and a carbon fiber folding prop. This is a quite powerful setup (700W if I'm not mistaken) and it can very well be flown with a cheaper less power setup as well such as the Turnigy 3548 (which is still very powerful).
Boobidoo coming in hear answering questions shows the commitment of this company to answer consumers questions. I'll be buying one.. Once the money tree grows a bit!
It has a skid that does indeed protect the dome when landing on hard surfaces but grass and bushes etc can still scratch the dome. We knew about this and made the domes as inexpensive as possible whilst not compromising on optical quality.
Love your show - I must admit I MUCH preferred it with the two Josh`s and the sweed making a small techie cameo. Was very unique and entertaining. Now its just getting too serious and the sweed LOVES to TELL YOU STUFF ! Maybe a slight rethink here..Thanks guys.
it's as if you think 90% of their viewers actually buy this gear? you think people watch master chef to learn to cook? i'm here to be entertained. any info is just bonus. these guys are the best RC production on the net. the info is organized, professionally assembled, branded and it's entertaining. any more info, stats, prices... isn't really what anyone wants to see, except maybe by you.
The $99.00 power pak is just the ESC motor and prop. The $250.00 kit comes with 2 sets of wings, pan tilt camera mount, 4 metal gear servos and carbon fiber wing and frame spars and custom fit box.
Haha, been pushing to get 25mpg in my 91 Ranger pick up! Got 24.94 last fill. Great video! Just found your channel tonight and love the content!! Flew RC for 8 years, ended with a 100cc Edge 540 in IMAC and have designed a few planes in CAD.
You can use any micro CCD camera that will fit in the dome also ! There are three holders included with the kit: Gopro 1/2, Gopro 3, and universal micro camera holder. I recommend the GoPro 3 silver.
I could get a versa wing in the air with a nice solid setup for $500 with everything for FPV. That is currently my favorite plane, even over my $2000+ skywalker.
There is absolutely no doubt why you guys are the worlds best RC Aircraft Video Program. I've been watching you from very early on and you just get better and better. When you do your build, fly, test series (very soon I hope) can you please include a lot of larger (60 inch) warbirds. I love them but seem to have issues with them particularly with tip stall and nosing over on landing. Also, have you guys thought of putting some of your shows on DVD?
Funny they mention the X-8 and that with the X-8 they point it to the ground a full throat but with this one they didn't! I'm feeling that there is some kind of vias on their side! But I don't blame them.
Agreed, all aircraft have their positives and negatives. My point is that "there is no best"... simply some are better than other in specific areas. One example where the RVJet would suffer compared to a stiffer wing would be in highspeed dive.
I can't believe AWESOME RC plane stuff like this is so damn cheap! I tried to get into flying RC planes in the mid 1980's and it was for rich kids only. I ended up getting a Grasshopper RC car and an RC10 car. They were great fun, and took crashes very well!
Reinforcing the elevons definitely is an improvement, I've merely been suggesting that the stock ones work at high speeds as well. If the elevons are reinforced (CF-strips or laminate) I suggest that the elevon hinge is beefed up as well. This because a stiffer elevon puts more strain on the hinge.
Yes it's possible to tilt 90 degrees down, if you weren't then you didn't install it correctly. The wing also fits perfectly in the box but not if you glue the extensions to the wings. The extensions can be separate parts and used when you like to.
I'm a designer of it and I'm perplexed as well why that broke. I've had quite severe ground impacts and while I've bent the tips they've never broke off. My guess is that there was a crack already in the wing. However the model is designed to primarily protect the expensive and important equipment in the fuse section. Even if you crash head on the dome it's designed to distribute the forces along the fuse and minimize damage on any local point. Wings are easy and cheap to replace on this model.
The PnT has holders for GP1/2/3 as well as a holder for most CCTV cameras. The reflection when using the latter is almost zero even when using the chrome dome. Because of the reflection we chose not to have dual cameras inside the dome, the other lens would instantly cause a lot of reflections with the gopro. Also size was also of course a factor. If you have a tiny KX-2 camera it's probably possible to mount it on top of the gopro inside the dome though.
Thank You Flite Test for the great entertainment, motivation to play, and the Free audio book. If i give the book credit to my wife she might come out and film me fly a bit. lol
Yes, check out the videos I have with the RVJET. They're all with the Sony PZ-0420 600TVL camera. It fits perfectly in the supplied CCTV holder. I even have the OSD-button cable attached for easy adjustments between flights.
It's vice but the postage to Australia is just about as much as the plane itself. The Zephyr II doesn't have any speed limits and is super tough. Mine has been over 200km/h with no flutter. Worth doing a review on it too.
The domes are $3 a piece and I usually fly each dome at least ten flights. That's about 30cents per flight in dome costs. :) Reflections in the chrome dome does exist when using gopro. When using a CCTV camera reflections is not visible, even when using the chrome dome.
speed limit for the long wing version is 62 mph/100km; i had to laminate the elevons due to flexing which was pushing the wing into the ground on speed dives and motor on. i should have ordered the white for out here in the hot desert sun; trailing edges curl up when left in the sun for any period of time. The motor could have been a lower kv for better fpv flight times since the airframe can not with stand high speeds. I've had good service from Range Video; airfoil needs work.
actually about 8:06 the reflex is what make make those "mini stalls" from what what i read about wings, a reflexed airfoil on a wing create a self stabilizing system if your CG is properly placed, long story short the reflex create a tail heavy moment on the wing and if the wing for example pitch up the reflex change the moment from tail heavy to nose heavy and pitch it down by it self, if it pitch down too much the process reverse and pitch up until equilibrium is obtained one again. if someone want more details there is a German Dr in Aerodynamics that is a RC hobbyist too that as a blog with more in depths explanation for others modelist to use, it is a bit complex but even when you don't get everything it help understanding the principles (look over Google for "design basic flying wing models" i remember those words where in the page's title)
I've hit a birch tree at over 60mph and the foam damage was a small indent in the wing LE. My guess is that their model already had a crack in the wing otherwise it shouldn't have broken off that easily. The wing tip might very well bend a little since the foam is quite thin but it should not break loose like that. I've flown hundred of flights and never broken my wing tips (except some bending that is very easy to bend back in shape).
Btw, in the video it states that the servos are included in the power pack which isn't correct. Both PnT and wing servos are included in the main kit as well as a vibration mount for IMU-based AP/OSD etc.
What happens when the long wing exceeds the VNE is that control authority is drastically reduced. The motor makes the model roll to the right and you can't counter this roll. The solution is to kill throttle and give maximum up elevator which regains control within a second. With the short wing this doesn't happen. A simple FPV-setup doesn't have to cost much at all.
The short wing (ie airfoil) and stock elevons can handle speeds in excess of 100mph. This has been thoroughly tested. The flutter comes from lateral twist in the long wing. That twist is not appearant in the short wing config.
They could do something like that which is on the Dynamic S ailerons to fix up that reflex!! It would not only look better, but most likely perform better as well.
I was honestly very surprised to see the wing tip break like that. I've flown it into a hard dirt field at 90kph 30 degree angle with only scratches on the dome as a result. That crash is in the end of the "130629 RVJET speed dives" video. I've also hit a birch tree with the left wing at 100kph. 15min, CA+kicker and new CF-tubes later I did the "130817 RVJET Cloud Flight". However the wing tips are indeed the most delicate parts of this model and could be laminated for added durability.
Yes, definitely. A smaller low KV-motor and large prop and the large wing config would be most efficient in terms of flight time. But it will be slower and you might have to bungee launch it. That's very easy though. With a >500W motor it's super easy to launch. Just hold it on the LE (closer then where Chad held) and power up. When you feel that it wants to lift just guide it over your head and off it goes.
Try the one with thermal camera, , see's body heat, fly by night, Great for patroling, a home or property, add a Channel, mount a laiser painter, and guid missles diretly to target, Very versatile, cheap, and expendable.
WOW, very interesting idea! I think this should be explored. I was just these past couple days looking at some very old (50+) 3D photography that was impressive. I'd be curious to see what we can do in this century. Yes I was wondering about the finger. I'd also like to see how many wing extensions could be flown.
You could cover the dome in invisibleSHIELD by ZAGG which is military grade scratch protection and has a lifetime guarantee and they will replace it for the cost of shipping as many times as you need!
With an AHI it would definitely be possible. I often fly using the AHI in the RVOSD looking a completely other direction then on the horizon and it works very well.
I want to see life size in flight and ground decoys for geese and ducks!!(inspired by my love for hunting as well as the dark wing duck build) would also be beneficial for conservation of these species and fun to fly in they're formations
2:20 what "Picky" was trying to say - beside looking nice. the actually plain model itself will behave better once on flight with better controllability. Trust him he knows what he's saying. In overall gents this video totally rocks... please let me know where to buy the actually remodelled RV Jet. It will be an awesome addition to the collection.
"I would never spend more than 300 bucks on a plane". You guys produce a very successful model aircraft show and I find it odd that the producer of this show wouldn't spend more on a plane then I would. Lots of us own and like purchasing aircraft far above 300 bucks. It seems the majority of these videos are DIY low priced foam planes, that is great for some people but there's also a huge audience watching you guys who are long time hobbyists. Many who own enough planes to have little interest in making a cheap foam one. I don't know if it's economically feasible for you guys but I would love to see some more reviews of nice kits, BnF planes, 3D helis, even if they're well above 300 bucks....
Damn this was 6 yrs ago, I might not have looked hard enough but I’d expect an updated version? I doubt I’ll have anywhere near the cost of this for a while tho if ever lol
@chris gange No the wing doesn't get wobbly over a certain speed. When using the short wing noone have yet flown it too fast and it is good for at least 170kph. The long wing however, has a VNE of about 100kph (compared to ~70kph of a X8). Over this speed the long wings suffers from lateral twist causing lack of control authority in the roll axis. Regaining control can be made in a second by applying full elevator and no aileron. David is honest and states that he knows us, IMO that shouldn't be against him. Imagine how many other reviews out that that has vested interests but they don't tell the audience about this. Also David did wait a looong time before making this review. He got the wing in may after all.
What doesn't add up? It's not up to me since I don't sell it and thus can't give numbers on a kit without the plastics would cost. Those parts are available as spare parts on RV so it's easy to see their cost and value. The RVJET is durable and produced with high quality parts and high quality production. Depending on what's inluded I wouldn't call it expensive but if you're looking for cheap then yes, you should probably look elsewhere. :)
Sorry, I had not heard the podcast so I wasn't aware of the details. I knew you guys were going to start doing podcasts but I didn't know you had started already
By far the best aerovehicle ever demonstrated on Flite Test
You guys sure are a good team. Sharing, caring, cutting up with each other! Makes a person feal like they are right there with you, having fun! Excellent production.
This is one of the best flight reviews I've seen from the guys at Flite Test.

Great to see the development of these rigs, there getting better and better all the time.

You can use any micro CCD camera that will fit in the dome also ! There are three holders included with the kit: Gopro 1/2, Gopro 3, and universal micro camera holder.
I recommend the GoPro 3 silver.
send it to space - hook it up to a balloon and fly it back to home like David tried on some of his other videos
Two quite extensive manuals are included. I also recommend visiting the RCG-thread which is filled with tips and recommendations.
The rvjet is probably one of the best wings/plane out there.
I could get a versa wing in the air with a nice solid setup for $500 with everything for FPV. That is currently my favorite plane, even over my $2000+ skywalker.

Most Excellent wing flys beautifully. Climbs great giving full 180 panoramic camera view of The FLAT EARTH. Awesome guys.
I am not on the inside of this hobby (I just have a Hubsan X4 107C, that's it) but I found this video to be a lot of fun to watch. Thanks, guys.
That's an awesome wing! I personally would take one of the extra domes and paint an airframe on it like the B-29 or or the Millennium Falcon!! Yaass!
Funny they mention the X-8 and that with the X-8 they point it to the ground a full throat but with this one they didn't! I'm feeling that there is some kind of vias on their side!

With the wings off it looks Burt Rutan's Spaceship One. Good Job!
That is so awesome! We've all been waiting for it!

I was just these past couple days looking at some very old (50+) 3D photography that was impressive.
I'd be curious to see what we can do in this century.
Yes I was wondering about the finger.
I'd also like to see how many wing extensions could be flown.
A crazy swedish person yelling comands is the best
You all need to see this especially Bixler
Lots of people afford all the FPV equipment, it's becoming a very popular part of the hobby.
It would be awesome if you did a review of the Phantom FPV flying wing from Hobbyking!
Thanks for making so awesome videos!
Good on you Chad for letting Josh S fly.
You could cover the dome in invisibleSHIELD by ZAGG which is military grade scratch protection and has a lifetime guarantee and they will replace it for the cost of shipping as many times as you need!
that cam gimbal is soo cool like it looks like its off of a heat seeker air to air missile
3M Rubbing compound ore hand glaze at your local autoparts store fixes scratches great!
chad is a party krapper
He pissed me off when he cut David off from telling his story
I wouldn't mind the $300 if it had more durability. Good job anyway fellas. I've been looking forward to this review.

I love the antenna it’s very advanced
Always love flite test vids!
Great job I was looking at this plane and did want to know more about it. thank you for doing the hard work.
That is one boss FPV. Wished I had on of those back in the mid 90's. : 0 Keep it up guys. Looking good.
I think you guys have a coolest, awesomest job in the world! :)
Oh yeah, look at Ritewings new wing gimble. Its very sweet.
It's sold by rangevideo. There's a link in the article section.
I feel your pain, I too have done that exact same injury to my finger several times! to damn keen to get my printing off!!!
Could you set the camera up so instead of fpv goggles you use some sort of vr headset, to move the camera without the joystick?
The pricier goggles have head tracking built in, can be plugged to the TX trainer port and assigned to cam servo channels
What does fpv stand for?
@@sapcrapdiseye1217 first-person-view it's supposed to make it look like you are either in, or on the airplane itself.
Excellent views guys, well done
"I would never spend more than 300 bucks on a plane". I really wanna know how you guys made the video antenna on the wing and the receiver antenna. Looks awsome. Instructions, plans?
I'm one of the designers of the RVJET. wing tip broke on that landing
Damn this was 6 yrs ago, I might not have looked hard enough but I’d expect an updated version?
I doubt I’ll have anywhere near the cost of this for a while tho if ever lol
Nice work, Chad!
You folks need to review a brushless gimbal of sorts. Tarot T-2D, RC Timer Gimbal, Arris CM2000, etc...
i would love to see you guys do a review of the ritewing zephyr 2 as a fpv platform or just a review on a ritewing.
Can you make a new "above the clouds" FPV video with RVJet. The X8 one was awesome!
@chris gange
No the wing doesn't get wobbly over a certain speed.

Hey David! With some of the planes yall reviewed had no wheels so in Flite Test fashon, design a bungy launcher for belly landers
Great episode!
23:05 Everybody's looking at the plane to the right (LOS), Josh looking to the right ( through goggles. ...looks funny...lol.
Sorry, I had not heard the podcast so I wasn't aware of the details. I knew you guys were going to start doing podcasts but I didn't know you had started already
It is a video of the Bixler one modified into a quadcopter and can be flown like a regular plane
