    That's similar to how I'm going to build my cabin. Except I'm thinking of using 4x4 for mine. Mine will be much smaller than the one you built. I'm thinking of building a 16x24. I'll be building it by myself without any equipment. That's why I'm going with lighter post so that I can maybe handle them better. It will be a job to get it up by myself That's for sure ,but I will make some pulleys to help. I have trees around I can use to do it.

    Awesome job. Its nice to see someone using popular for timber framing. The logs are very straight and the wood looks easy to chisel.

    I'd probably coat the bottom of your vertical support posts with a generous amount of boiled linseed oil to where it gets between the posts and the concrete foundation to prevent rot when moisture gets up in there. It'll also help with checking in that area as well...Love what y'all are doin'

      I’m actually going to jack up each post and place an aluminum plate, then do what your talking about. Thanks for the comment.

    Richard, I did have one question about why you chose to use the propane torch on your post and beams. I’ve seen that done for the exterior of barns and structures. My understanding is that the bugs will avoid wood that’s been seared by a flame. So it seems it’s a natural preventative to do that. But on the inside of the structure, would that be as necessary as the board and batten on the outside? And aren’t there other clear products for preserving the wood? Just curious. Please know that I’m not trying to play Monday morning quarterback here. I’m the guy sitting on my couch watching you live the dream and do a lot of hard work. So I have a lot of respect for all that you’ve done and continue to do. Thx Bill

      I do it to help protect the wood and I very much like the burnt look as opposed to natural.

    Richard, I’m really enjoying this series. I’m Planning to take a 5 day course at The shelter institute in Woolrich, Maine to learn the basics of joinery and assembly of post and beam structures. Then, I just have to buy some land near my brother’s place in the Berkshire Mountains of MA and I’ll be good to go. He has about 90 acres, mostly wooded and he’s got the same Kabota 3901 as you Richard. Now I’ve got a talk with him about making some modifications to his Kabota so that we can source the timber’s on this property. I sent him the tool video you did with the mounted chainsaw in the counterweight balance using the box grate. I have a question about the extension you built to raise the post of high in the air using your bucket. Is that 4 in.² steel that you used? How long are those two long pieces? They look to be about 12 feet in length. I haven’t watched I’ve only watched a few of your videos so far. I’m wondering if you made one where you described how you fabricated that metal extension for lifting timbers using your bucket? Thx again Richard!!!

    You guys do good work. What is the reason for burning some of the beams and not others?

      Welcome. Check out some of the other build videos. I didn’t have time to finish them while my help was there. I continue to finish the burning before the roof goes on.

    We call Mortis and tenon Tongue and grove I just wanted to ask when u cut the tongue in the end of the beams why u do not also save some timer and cut across the ends and take that one third out in one piece

      The horizontal cuts aren’t that easy for me, lol. And the “slick” makes it very easy.

    How do you get the knee braces in? Lift the top plate a bit?

    • @SmokyMountainOutpost
      @SmokyMountainOutpost  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They should go in at a slight angle if I figured correctly. And, I can always take a little off at an angle to get them in if need be. I would have had to have them all cut to put it together. I am by myself, and take advantage when my son can be here to help. I did good to have the post and beams ready when he came to do the job, lol. I figured I could add them later, lol. Hope so

      @@SmokyMountainOutpost Never going to happen due to the geometry. You will have to have a floating tenon on one end to install them now.

    How come you went thru all this work and didn't follow standard of the industry post and frame framing and anchoring details?

    • @SmokyMountainOutpost
      @SmokyMountainOutpost  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have my own standard. First, there is a wall going underneath the beams that will also be anchored that I didn’t have time to do because of help. It will also be anchored. I didn’t see any reason for seat cuts since everything will be supported by stick framed walls. So this is a mix of old and new aesthetics.

    • @SmokyMountainOutpost
      @SmokyMountainOutpost  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Knee bracing comes later when I have time. Not important now since I have it temporarily braced.
