Welcome to the original Chinese Paradise. In this second episode on Dali, we learn a little bit more about the city from our buggy driver and guide, we meet some of my Chinese social media fans and we see a working church and get to meet some of members of the choir. Please watch until the end to see the church part. I literally just wondered in so this was not staged at all, a genuine insight into religion in China.

China has a special freedom of faith. My grandfather believes in Buddhism, and my grandmother believes in God, but they can live together without any problem.😂

That church reminded me of an old methodist church I used to go to when I was a kid. Well Toby, going to McD often doesn't make you a hamburger. You know the saying.

There are many Mainland Chinese students in Sydney, Australia and several come from Christian families back in China. I meet them in my church where they have come on Sundays and several have even been baptised over the years here before returning to China. The West seem to have a completely screwed up image of religion in China - which prescribes literally to "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and to God, what is God's" - the actual separation of church from the state. No interference by religious orders in the matters of the state basically and if one adheres to that, there's no problems to be expected. China underwent a terrible revolution called "the Taiping Rebellion" led by a fanatical Christian convert that resulted in the deaths of some 20 million people from 1850 to 1864 and no one in China, less alone the Chinese Government wants to see that sort of thing repeated. However, the Chinese Constitution also guarantees the Chinese people freedom of religion and it has adhered to that.

When you are actually in China, to even ask the question whether religion is practised in China would immediately strike you as a silly question. Religious festivals are widely cekebrated by millions of devotees. But the question is raised most often by Christians in particular because of their special circumstances. Or rather, its unfortunate circumstances. In recent times, Christianity in China had largely been associated with colonialism, western interference, militarism, and western triumphalism. This is not to say that there were no good work done by Christians in the field of education, medicine, social change and general do-gooding. But the reality is that the Christian mission to bring its message to China is often messy. Most of the efforts are directed from outside China by Christian denominations or mission groups tied to western denominations. They bring with them their baggage of denominational traditions, history, rituals, hymn books, literature, etc. There are a few non-denominational or inter-denominational efforts, but they are exceptions to the rule. Naturally, the headquarters of these denominations are in the west where they had started, such as the Vatican or Plymouth, as the case may be. Very often, their foreign roots and control sit uncomfortably with the local government in China. Doctrinally, many would also question why the church in China should be foisted with the unwanted baggage of westetn Christianity such as the Reformation, wars, denominations, tele-evangelists, etc., of the western world? One can easily understand the antipathy, particularly on the part of local government officials who often see a church beholden to a western organisation as a threat.

Western religious organizations are defacto government agencies and use religion politics to control other nations.

Summarize the situation of religion in China in two sentences . 1.Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. 2.God accepts Caesar's guidance.
