    "We are the keytarist: We have ONE job, and that is to run around the stage and make the guitarist regret ever letting us get rid of our keyboard stands. That is our JOB. We are there to upset guitarists who are too full of themselves. Everything else is secondary." -Pink (2018)
    You have produced what will likely become my favorite quote. I have an Alesis VW2 incoming next week myself, so I'm excited to take it for a spin and really enjoy it.

      I wanted to buy and use a Roland AX-1 in a rock band, but the guitarist wouldn't allow it because it didn't fit the style of our music. In one of my recent bands I used to want to hang a Rock Band 3 Wireless Keyboard around my neck, but the guitarist wouldn't let it, so I put it on a keyboard stand like a regular keyboard.

    15:43 Can I just say... this little speech has had a profound effect on me. I've built a few keytars myself, and never really taken to playing them live, they just hang up in my room and get played once a year. The guitarist/singer of the band I'm keyboardist for HATES keytars and is absolutely full of himself...
    You have just single-handedly rekindled my love for the keytar and my drive to make the Syblade a viable product... and also to piss off my bands singer.
    Much love, a new fan & subscriber x

    I didn't think that there was anyone out there as krazay as I am... but then, highly creative people are a rare thing, indeed.
    It cometh in the mail,
    much bubble wrap to play!
    God I love this box,
    I shall hang it the wall today!
    Oh look! it's an Alesis keytar,
    A gift from a friend.
    If I had a broken heart...
    This keytar, it would probably mend.
    Buttons change color,
    to green when tapped.
    Naw, neither my soul nor mind...
    shall ever be trapped!

    I think it's probably easier in some ways to play the Keytar than the Piano because you don't always have to hunch over it alot, & it's way easier to carry with you as a pianist. Because it has less keys than a piano, this makes it easier for beginners to learn how to play the keyboard.

I just had a great jam session with my band yesterday with my Alesis keytar. I love that I can walk around and take some of the lead parts in the songs. My band loved it too but I noticed our guitarist kinda hated me a bit for it lol. I guess I'm doing the keytarist job right.

    I'm looking to get my first Keytar, I noticed the Vortex 1 is $100 cheaper on eBay compared to the Vortex 2.
    Should I get the 1 or is the price difference worth it for the 2?

    • @PinkAndTheKeytarCat
      @PinkAndTheKeytarCat  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the 2 is definitely better than the 1, but I don't know if it's $100 better. The main difference is that the 1 is not wireless, and it does not have the easy way to disable tilt. I know plenty of people who really like their vortex 1, but it's sort of universally agreed that the 2 was a good upgrade

  • @rudess84
    @rudess84 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Don't buy it, it has a very bad manufacturing defect. When you play fast sometimes notes will stuck and play forever, you have to reset the main keyboard (if you switch off the keytar doesn't resolve the problem, notes will hang anyway). After 6 months, and after they identify the bug, Alesis still has not resolve it and they disappeared since 3 months...I bought and after 1 week I gave it back to the shop

    • @PinkAndTheKeytarCat
      @PinkAndTheKeytarCat  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rudess84 the notes sticking is part of how midi works, if the signal is bad (it's due to midi transmitting start and stop signals instead of continuous messages). I have thar problem with my broken az-1 because the cable 0ort is faulty. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with it, though! I hope you find a keytar that works better for you

    Hi Again, How good is the sound quality of the Yamaha if I'm not using a computer/synth? I'm new to all of this. I've played piano for many years but am not familiar with MIDIs, DAWs, synthesizers, etc., and want something that I can play for people w/o the accompanying sound equipment or a computer. I'm looking for a Kind of like a good-sounding keyboard - not a "kids'" one - that I can sling over my shoulder and play while I'm moving around . Any thoughts here? Thanks!

    • @PinkAndTheKeytarCat
      @PinkAndTheKeytarCat  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The SHS-500 has a speaker, but the speaker isn't loud enough and isn't pointed in the right direction for other people to be hearing you play with it. It works more like a personal monitor, so you'll still need some kind of amp or PA to play for people, even in small settings. The sounds are fine. There's 30 of them and about 17 are actually pretty useful. There's no individual string instruments and there's no organ sounds, so keep that in mind.
      You will need to plug the vortex into some midi device to get sounds. The best I've found for cheap and low-maintenance and easy to use is to use IOS garageband on iPad. Honestly, an ipad costs less than most DAW software so if you're not really planning on getting hecking into music creation on that level, I think ipad's easier to get running coherently and cleanly.
      The sounds in the sonogenic really aren't special, though, and they're not incorporated into the hardware very well, so they feel clunky. I found that after a month or so, I still didn't have sounds that I wanted out of it (ORGANS) and had to start wirelessly pairing it to the ipad to get the same sounds, and at that point why was I not just playing the Vortex, which is a much better controller.
      That's just my opinion but getting the vortex is like getting a piece of cake and then having to go find your own frosting, and getting the shs-500 is like getting a piece of cake that has frosting and also has chili sauce on it. You're getting more but it's not the more you want.

    I was just about to search for a video about this thing, and then you upload one, ha! So if I'm correct, this thing doesn't have built-in sounds? I need an accordion sound haha. Cheers from the Netherlands!

    • @PinkAndTheKeytarCat
      @PinkAndTheKeytarCat  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yep, it's just a midi controller. It comes with Ableton Lite, which has some pretty good instruments built in, you can plug it into GarageBand if you have a Mac or find another program for Windows, or you can buy a tone bank (I have the Midiplus MidiEngine, which is the cheapest tone bank on Amazon, and it works pretty nicely for what it is. It's got a sound they call an accordion but it's a bit eh) to run it through. I'm pretty sure Ableton will also let you take a recording of an accordion and turn it into a MIDI voice.

    • @Lynlish
      @Lynlish 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, thanks for the heads up on buying a tonebank! I'm fairly new to midi/keytars so I'd never heard of those. Cheers! :)

    • @PinkAndTheKeytarCat
      @PinkAndTheKeytarCat  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Anything that says "GM compliant" has to have at least 2 accordion tones (#21 and #24, I believe). If it says "GM Class 2 Compliant" it's going to have at least 4 accordion tones (22.0, 22.1, 23, 24). What the tones are called and what they're supposed to represent is standardized, but what they actually sound like is completely dependent on the sound module you're using, so listen to some samples before you make your purchase.
      I might actually review my little cheap sound box that I have, since several people have been interested in it and I find it quite handy to have around.

    I had a nightmare of a time getting my Alesis Vortex. It had been right around the time they discontinued the 1st gen wireless black model and hadn't announced the 2nd gen yet. I had ordered it from Amazon and after 4 months of waiting for it to be back in stock, dealing with the Alesis reps giving me the run around whether the product was discontinued or not, had to cancel the order and hunt it down on the used market. People on Ebay were literally trying to off them for like $600. I found a used one from guitar center for $200, get it after 3 weeks, the thing powers up but none of the keys work, LED inconsistently responsive. Send it back to guitar center and wait another 6 weeks. About a month later I see they were announcing the next 2nd gen.
    In all honesty though, while the LEDS and sliders are really nice on the 2nd gen, I like the dedicated launch controls of the 1st gen a bit more.

      Make sure you've dropped an instrument onto the track and armed that track (Ableton has a series of tutorials that I suggest you check out). There should be a little button of a piano keyboard on the top right. Select that, and then press some of the home row keys on your computer keyboard (A-L keys). That button should tell Ableton to use your computer keys as an instrument, so if that won't work, it's a problem with your Ableton settings and probably not your Vortex

      Yep! You can change what notes or patches or channels they transmit on. You can also change the color, so sometimes I'll have the same presets settings with different colors and then change the color just for extra OTT drama

      krazykarl9 definitely! It's really nice to finally have a keytar that's from this decade and that interfaces well with computers

    Hey, thanks for this. How does this keytar compare to the Yamaha SHS-500 you reviewed on 5/10/19?

    • @PinkAndTheKeytarCat
      @PinkAndTheKeytarCat  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're only going to buy one, I absolutely recommend this one over the -500. You get a much more usable instrument with the Vortex. The sounds in the Sonogenic aren't worth the downsides of the actual controller.

      @@PinkAndTheKeytarCat Hi Again, How good is the sound quality of the Yamaha if I'm not using a computer/synth? I'm new to all of this (played piano for many years but am not familiar with MIDIs, DAWs, synthesizers, etc.) and want something that I can play for people w/o the accompanying sound equipment or a computer. Kind of like a decent keyboard - not a "kids'" one - that I can sling over my shoulder and play. Any thoughts here? Thanks!

    was wondering how much delay there is on the octave shift. Is it fast enough to switch back and forth while playing?

    Can it be connected to the amp directly without computers

    • @PinkAndTheKeytarCat
      @PinkAndTheKeytarCat  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not directly to an amp, no. You need some kind of midi module. The cheapest one I've tried is the pianobox mini GM module

    • @PinkAndTheKeytarCat
      @PinkAndTheKeytarCat  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It took me a few tries before I found a program that works for me with the MIDI stuff. Someday, I'll have enough money for Logic, or for a computer that has enough storage for Ableton, Garage Band, Mainstage 3, and iMovie all at once, but that day's not today.

      @@PinkAndTheKeytarCat I've being playing piano since I was 9 years old. Now it's already more than ten years. Now I am more into playing with a live band or jam with others. Piano or Synths are both too heavy and inconvenient to carry with. Keytar is the best inst for keyboardist to live with. For those Roland keytar synth, I just don't need its internal sounds. They were so redundant and crappy ever since I've learnt MIDI and VST. I could get literally any kind of high quality software instrument sound with a MAC or PC. No way to waste money on keytar nor keyboards' speaker neither. Coz those speakers are useless and cheap. If i need a good speaker, I can always buy one and connect to it. I won't live with my keytar speakers. It just makes the keyboard heavier and gets me fatigue. Thus, Midi keyboard is the best and the future. Alesis vortex 2 is the best one and the most stylish available on market.

    What exactly is the purpose of the little pads up by the sliders.

    • @PinkAndTheKeytarCat
      @PinkAndTheKeytarCat  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can program them to be drums, or to play specific samples when you tap them. Basically, just think of them like velocity-sensitive buttons that can do whatever you tell them to.
