This is a first in a series called, Industrial Belly, where I will go into the heart of Sheffield's steel production areas. This short video is a taste of Attercliffe, which was a dominant industrial suburb of northeast Sheffield, England on the south bank of the River Don.
It has an incredibly rich history! The name Attercliffe was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as 'Ateclive', meaning, 'At the cliffe', a small escarpment that lay alongside the River Don.
At the peak of the Industrial Revolution, Attercliffe was one of the world's greatest steel making areas. Its huge role in the industrial revolution was largely due to the water power provided by the River Don, passing through the North West of the area, and the Tinsley Canal that passes through the South East, as this allowed raw materials to come in by boat and finished goods to leave.
Post second world war, however, Attercliffe’s importance began to decline. In the 1980s, Thatcher’s ruthless dogmatic ideology and suppressive social injustices compounded the decimation of the area. The pounding heart of Attercliffe as a dominant production area of steel has now stopped, with only Sheffield Forgemasters producing specialised steel for nuclear submarines.

And again, a perfectly directed and artistic video! Excellent processing and black and white film idea! A good feeling of the place, allows you to imagine yourself there in a long time ago. I liked this bridge you walked and the tunnel with iron arches. And in the end, the effect of the burning film seemed to me very appropriate, as the idea of the concept of destruction, reflecting the essence of the historical description of this place, destroyed by time and history. It suddenly ignited because of the weather heat. It was very dangerous and I nearly got burnt. Luckily I put the flame out before it damaged the wooden camera 😃
