I’m in 9a in Texas. I always take several cuttings from the trees and carry them through the winter in case the ones in the ground don’t make it through the cold. They root easily. They grow so fast in summer in full Texas sun. They have fruit in the fall. So growing them that way they could be used as an annual. Occasionally I have one make it through in a protected area but they really hate cold.

I lived in Guam and my Acerola tree in the ground started to fruit at about 2 years and fruited every month all year round without any pauses, i had the tree for 8 years before I moved back to Mainland USA.

These trees are growing extremely well. Some questions:What are the temperature extremes where you are located? What latitude are you on? How big to the plants have to be before they will tolerate frosts? Will they handle occasional days over 47C (even 50C)?? How drought tolerant are they? What are their watering requirements ? Do birds or other animals attack the cherries?

Thanks for the video and info. I put mine in the ground in April as a 1ft twig and now in October it is 8ft! Hoping it makes it through the winter here in bay area california zone 9b. I was planning on protecting it but it grew too big to cover!

I have Barbados cherry that I purchased as a 6” tall plant in March of 2019 that just gave me its first fruit. I have in a pot with Jays potting soil. So it may not always take years.

Great video! I am planning on planting a Barbados cherry in a tight backyard space as well, so could you please advise whether I cran keep a Barbados cherry to a 7' x 7' maximum height and width indefinitely as it will be near a fence as well by puning it or this plant cannot tolerate hard pruning and may develop dead branches or not fruit well?
Also do you know if this plant can be coppiced like mulberries in case I want to reduce its height drastically?
    Best regards

For those looking for a true cherry, these have no relation to actual cherries and don't taste at all like cherries.
