  • The Bandit Diaries - Entry #1 - This show follow the lives of the troop of wild Vervet monkeys that live here at the Vervet Monkey Foundation. In this episode two male bandit Vervet monkeys get into a small monkey fight. Juvenile monkeys play in the trees. A baby monkey gets scared and a family of monkeys groom each other at the end.
    The Vervet Monkey Foundation is a wildlife rehab center for Vervet monkeys. These monkey videos will not feature any dialogue or music. All the animal videos are simply stitched together and left with nature sounds. The idea is to present you with the ability to simply observe a troop of wild Vervets in this unique monkey habitat in South Africa. Animal rehab is very important to us, so are animal rights. I hope that you enjoy viewing this peaceful nature documentary HD. The shows intention is to be like a National Geographic or Planet Earth style wildlife documentary. If you have any questions or suggestions please leave them in the comments below.

    Hey everyone watching this -- if you get an ad at the start at the video, don't skip it. Let it play through, and heck even click on it! If anyone deserves some revenue from TH-cam, it's Kyle & the Vervet Foundation!

      You're welcome! It was the first thing I noticed and I'm a big believer in "what can we do to help someone else that doesn't cost anything?" -- I always watch for ads on channels I like, because it's no skin off my back, so to speak, I can do it for you every time -- but I don't know if other viewers think of this when they're cruising around TH-cam, so I wanted to point it out!

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think that's a pretty rare mindset, but it's a fantastic way to look at ads here on TH-cam. We really really appreciate it. :)

    Hi Kyle, you sure have a talent, not only the camera, and the monologue with Vervet Forest. You let me feel as I was standing
    beside you, Thinking I was in fantasy land, but in wonderland.
    Those little bandits are going to get fat, with the open buffet.
    I think you you might think your audience, just can’t t be satisfied with what you are doing for us. It’s just we can’t get enough. We can’t!!!
    Which takes the most time, writing your “prologue “ , talking, or maybe stick little name tag on, etc. just thoughts, but do what you think best for you.
    God bless you, all the staff, all the monkeys.

    3:41 **A MUST SEE** 😃🐒🙌Watch the monkey on the right, it starts on the ground & then jumps up on the crates. He then tries jumping over the cloth tarp but its foot was snagged on the tarp, it thought someone grabbed its foot so it goes under the tarp looking, then comes out looking for someone who tripped it. So funny to watch.🐵

    OMG! The best 15 and a half minutes of my week!
    As a life-long insomniac, I have learned many ways of managing my sanity, while most of the world sleeps. Part of this includes a few hours a night, hanging out with troops of Long-Tail, and Pig-Tail Macaques, as well as Snow Monkey's on TH-cam!
    *MY NEWEST LOVE, IS OFFICIALLY VERVET MONKEYS* I can't wait to read some of your suggested learning, and find out all I can about these beautiful little creatures.
    You asked if you should continue "The Bandit Diaries", my answer is UNDOUBTEDLY YES!

    Beautifully done! It lacks the earsplitting sound of constant traffic you hear in the macaque videos. It's great to be able to hear their natural vocalizations. It's interesting, too, to see if the wild vervets react in any way to humans in close proximity. The only thing I'd add is some occasional commentary on your part telling us who is interacting with who and what they are doing. For example, the two males fighting - likely fighting over food, territory, females in heat, all of the above? What kinds of leaves are they eating up in the tree, that kind of stuff. Who they are and what's going on.

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      OMG Yes! Please do a commentary with the vids. Kyle, me thinks you have us spoiled by commenting on the baby vids lol. It definitely is fascinating to watch their behavior, but it's not always easy to understand the who, what, and why.

    Kyle I want to thank you and all the people associated VMF. You have given me and hopefully many many others ,great knowledge of these absolutely wonderful animals and I very much enjoy the way you present your videos..the natural audio is very much appreciated (and the English lol)
    I love hearing these amazing animals and all their noises and the way you present each and every story..The love you have for them is so heartwarming and I just want u to know that the world is a better place with people like you and your partners in it...the love you all show for these guys and the hard work u all do to get them back into their natural habit is to be commended/applauded/awarded/and most definitely recognized, again and again... I wish I were able to do what u do..I have been fascinated with monkeys for a while now and have also been following the "other" channels. I also have been disgusted with the way the "others" behave on their channels but cannot help but fall in love with every single soul that is videoed. I'm sorry this is long and rambling...never commented before but if anyone deserves a comment it is def you..thank you for all you do. You are truly an amazing person.

Many of the staff members read these comments as well, so it's always great for them to hear people singing their praises. I'm happy to learn that so many compassionate individuals like yourself are coming from those "other" channels and that you are able to find a community that fits with the sensibility that you would like to project into the world.

    I thought you had described that a baby would be crying for its mom to come get him at the end of th video? I don't think I saw that or missed it...
    I think the concept has potential, but perhaps it needs a bit of a story line: more conceptualization around the monkeys' lives outside. e.g., how do they see the humans, grounds, enclosures. How do the adoption enclosure look from their perspective? I'm just brainstorming a bit. But all that you do is great!

    Keep making the bandit videos. Great to see them in their natural habitat. It gives us viewers a point of comparison as well, although it didn't seem like there was much difference in their behavior. Just to echo the sentiment of other viewers, you and your team are doing a fantastic job. Any form of animal rescue is always heartwarming, it also revives my hope for humanity. Kudos to you, Kyle and crew.

      Looking forward to it :) And I'll vouch for the comments on the Ankgor Wat monkeys, I've watched those videos, and it is like watching a train wreck, so hard to look away. I don't blame the VOs doing the videos, though, because it is a giant park with loads of people throwing food out to the monkey troops, so that changes the dynamic greatly. I don't know about the VOs deliberately doing anything to harm the monkeys, though, I don't think they'd need to.

    Kyle and all the amazing people at VMF. What a fantastic job you all do. I first heard of you when I saw the episode of The Dodo with little Jerry and have been hooked since. I've watched every video I could get my hands on. Although the Bandit Diaries was a bit different with no narrating or music, and it took me a while to get used to not thinking "well which one is that", it is much more natural. And somehow in keeping with the wildness of the Bandits. So yes Kyle, please, please more episodes of the Bandits. It would also be interesting perhaps in the future to see more in depth episodes of The Vervet Forest explaining how each of the troupes behave together with a little more info on them (or any other type of info you would like to share about them). For instance I believe it is mentioned that one of the troupes has had the least amount of human contact. You know, details like that. Once again wonderful, wonderful work you all do. P.s. I will forever be a little in love with baby Groot;) Stephanie, New Brunswick, Canada

    Love it! Please continue with the diary. Some questions. How large is this troupe more or less? Do you ever release any of the other troupes member to the wild? How long does the mothers take care of the babies? It seems to me that they have to forge for their own food still quite small

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ty Diaz great to hear! Thanks for the questions.
      The bandit troop is probably about 30 monkeys give or take.
      Troops must be released as a full troop, you can’t really release individual monkeys unless they are age appropriate males, but you must know where they live first (when releasing an injured rehabilitated monkey). It’s our dream to create a wildlife reserve called The Vervet Forest which will act as a release site for the 14 troops of Vervets we have here, but that’s a much bigger topic for a future video 😉.
      The families stay together forever more or less. The males will move from troop to troop once they are mating age and eventually settle into a troop when older. But the females generally stay within their society continuing on their family lineage, so most natural troops will be made up of generations and generations of monkeys from the same bloodline.
      The babies begin to ween from their mothers at about a year old and are basically learning to forage when they are just a couple of weeks old. ✌️😊

    Hi Kyle from the USA in Ohio. I lov what you and all the ppl there at the foundation are doing to help these little guys. Please keep up the great and beautiful work and of course the videos.💕 lov ,lov lov them!! Hey a quick? How long do they nurse their babies?(vervets)The monkeys I watch in Cambodia seem to wean at a very young age,like some in a month or so,just was wondering if that was natural for them or sometimes I think it has to do with the environment they are in,like all the food and trouble from all the tourism.Maybe I'm wrong ,just a guess of mine . Thaxs again for the video and keep them coming believe me when I say everybody well lov them . I have watched all of the ones about the babies at the foundation that has been saved,lov them also,these little guys are so neat ,they have the sweetest faces and all the different personalities just makes it so interesting,but as you can tell I lov monks, lol !

      @VervetMonkey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hahah, thank you! I'm glad you're loving the show and the monkeys and thank you for telling people about the series, that means a lot to me. In regards to your question - Vervets drink milk from their moms for about the first year of their lives, then they begin to ween off the milk. But from the beginning of their lives the Vervets are already learning to forage on their own. At about three months old they begin to leave their mothers side and grow more confident and capable of finding their own food, but they still suckle till about a year old, sometimes longer.

    Fantastic video!!! I was so afraid hearing the ferocity of the male Vervets! Do the Alpha females ever intercede for the males who are fighting?
    Do you have a protected section solely for humans from the bandits as well?
    Is the Vervet Forest completely surrounded by electric fence? If so, how many acres?
    Do Vervets sleep the whole night through or do some keep Sentry watch at night? What are their normal sleep/nap hrs? Thank you so kindly!
    Best channel on TH-cam!!! Keep up the outstanding work!!!

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The males only really fight each other for rank in the troop and subsequent ability to mate with the females. When it comes to troop vs troop fights the females are actually more often than not the ones on the front lines with the males running reconnoissance and backup on the fringes of the field.
      No there is not a protected section for people.
      The Vervet Monkey Foundation is about 60 acres. Each troop has their own electric fence enclosure, the sanctuary itself is not fenced, we are simply a plot of indigenous bush nestled amongst many farms.
      Vervets sleep whenever they want to. Everyone sleeps at night, but everyone is always cautious and aware, but the males are always the first to alert in any condition.

    Hey Kyle I have a question or two for you. 1- did the bandits move in right away. I mean when the foundation did? And did they move in as individuals? Or did they move in as a troop? Which brings up another question is there more than one troop in area. And if there is do they fight for or over the area? Since it would be considered a very good one. Ok, I think that should be enough for now. But I do have more lol. 🐵🐒🐯🐨🐻🐰🐧🐗🐬 animals rule!

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Terri Harris 😊 The bandit troop has grown and changed over time; there are definite family lineages and there is one main troop, but there are also small offshoots of the troop as well as loner outliers like Skinny Minnie Jr. and Jr. Jr. as well as Tripod who is a legend deserving of his whole own episode. But like with all things in nature everything in the troop happened organically, the foundation has been around for almost 30 years, so you can imagine how many variations of the bandit troop there have been.
      There are fights occasionally, the fights are more between males within the troop or fights between the bandit troop and an enclosed troop. The bandits love to start fights with enclosed troops especially certain ones like DnD who just happen to be situated by the Bandit Troops favorite sleeping tree. 👍
