This is the description of the mask's powers, and quote "The mask releases the wearer's inner "id", a person's deepest wants or desires, and grants the reality warping powers of a cartoon" end quote. It didn't work on Walter because his inner id was already released and dominate, he had absolutely no suppressed desires or wants. He could do whatever he wanted and did.

Honestly, I think it's because the Mask can't enslave him. So it wants nothing to do with him and won't even activate if he tries to put it on. Essentially he has an unbreakable will and nothing that the mask actually tempt him with that he can't already do himself.
As we see signs of early on and especially post-WT, the Mask is sentient and tries to enslave it's users, but it has to wear them down and break their will. Initially by letting them act out their deepest desires...but then starts to gradually corrupt and twist them while encouraging them to drink even more deeply of it's power and wear it all the time which lets it take them over more and more.
The people who realize this stop wearing it or try to get rid of it. Though we do eventually get to see what happens if you break completely.
(while World Tour is basically irrelevent since it ends exactly where it began (with the only meaningful change being that the Mask gets moved to a different deposit box since the thief couldn't remember which one he got it out of) due to some timey-whimey bullcrap and took place in a completely alternate dimension for 99% of it anyway, the series that comes AFTER it picks up where Hunt for Green October left off.

Maybe that's also why the teens in the third comic weren't murdering anybody when they used it. Stanley was the perfect victim for the mask; he hated everyone to the point of wanting to kill. If it wasn't for the mask, he would have probably become a serial killer anyway. Kathy only used the mask to kill him, and a bunch of gangsters. Calloway tried to use it to stop crime, but having possibly dealt with corruption harbored a deep hatred for criminals. The teens meanwhile didn't have any long-term hatred for anyone. They were just teens struggling with life. If one used the mask for murder, it probably meant that the person was already dealing with some demons. These guys were just a failing musician, an anarchist, a recovering drug-addict and a nerd. They didn't have vendetta's, they had dreams and ambitions that they failed to follow

The reason The Mask failed to bond with Walter is because of its very nature. In at least one comic they mention that The Mask brings out the deepest, darkest desires of the one who wears it. Walter already *lives* those desires, and so it has no effect on him.

So for people to be immune to the Mask's power can be actually common? With that logic, the mask would also probably not work on other people who like Walter, are naturally violent, and not restricted by morality like some other average people. The mask would probably not work on Trevor Phillips, the Joker, Rick, or Deadpool

When I first read up on the original Mask comics, I read an interesting theory on why the Mask wouldn't bond with Walter. Sure it could've been because he was already living his dark desires and/or had no inner-self to draw out but this theory is more simplistic. The Mask wouldn't bond with him simply because the Mask didn't like him. Walter was pretty much the only person to seriously hurt it and, seeing as how the Mask has a consciousness of its own, it held a grudge against Walter and refused to do anything for him.

    • @flashtyb
      @flashtyb 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Admittedly that’s the most satisfying answer I can think of that doesn’t involve Walter being a mystical being himself…
I mean sure he’s resistant to pain, stronger than a freight train going full speed, and dead set on achieving whatever goal he’s aiming for… But there’s really nothing to say he’s a magical or even supernatural being.
So, yeah… The Mask being stubborn enough to not work for someone specific actually makes a lot of sense.

I think the writer came across this idea, and thought this would be the perfect antagonist for The Mask. And that's why Walter didn't want to put on the Mask, he only fought against it because he wanted it to kill him. But when it failed to kill him just like everything else, he saw no reason not to put it on.

But I don't think there's anything that needs to be changed, really, it works. I never got the feeling that movie Mask was supposed to be a "good hero" but I also wouldn't want to see an R-rated remake of it now with so much gratuitous violence in movies already.

This is the first time I'm hearing about the Mask Comics and a thought occurred to me. I think Walter couldn't wear the mask because he was a warped psycho to begin with. Not just really strong and unkillable, but his mental state was far too gone. Every other wearer of the mask had problems sure, but without it in their lives they wouldn't go on a killing spree. I believe the mask does 2 things to it's wearer, 1. Alters their mind and free them from any morality they may have had. This can be fought a bit by the wearer, but it will still happen 2. Gives them the cartoony powers it's known for. If the Mask can't go through Step 1 it can't progress to step 2, but that's all just a theory really.

I actually thought it turns people into who they want to be without restraint, essentially an enabler that allows someone to do what they want without worrying about consequences or morality, the first guy was screwed over most of his life and just wanted everything to burn without care, the mask let him do that, the second wanted to end crime, the mask let's him do that without worrying about things like criminal law and rights, the third was a wimp who wanted to be the one in charge instead of a doormat, the mask helps him become a mafia boss, so on and so forth.

      @Terastas 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Jim Carry would win. Plain and simple: Both characters would be indestructible, but Jim's Mask has... Not necessarily restraint, but rather a self-awareness that translates into a sense of restraint.
Let's take the bomb in the club, for example. Comic Mask was actively seen using bombs as weapons, whereas Carry Mask swallowed it so it could detonate "harmlessly" inside him... And to curb his appetite for chaos, followed it up with a burping fire joke.
Kind of like Alucard from Hellsing, Carry's mask always lets his opponent have the first shot so he can show off his invulnerability and/or make a cartoony gag out of it. Only instead of proceeding to butcher them like pigs, he usually follows it up with a gag to either immobilize them (pull his underwear over his head), daze them ("squeeze me gently"), or scare them off (the 'bang' flags).
As such, the Mask has far less influence on his sanity. Unlike the Comic Mask, who inevitably either has a "What have I done?!" moment and rips it off, or has a complete breakdown and self-implodes.
So if the two did cross paths... It'd probably be 99% the Comic Mask wailing on the Carry Mask until Carry either yoinked the mask off of him or flushed him down a toilet.

While it's not the most gory, per se, it is using gore a bit better than a lot of other things I've seen. The way that it lingers on it a bit more and tries to show how disturbing it is. It kinda makes me think when Claire tells Matt to stab that thug in the head in a way that won't kill him,but be the most painful in Daredevil. You see WAY more gory stuff on that show, but the way they show it makes you wince in discomfort more than a lot of it.

Would it, though? The reason the Joker is so crazy is because that chaotic and unstable unconscious is brought out to the surface, and its possible that, rather than destroying his orderly, conscious mind, it merely switched the two, so that the unconscious is in the foreground an the conscious is locked away in deep inside him. You could write a really interesting story where Joker puts on the Mask and it actually pulls up the last fragments of his conscious mind out to the foreground and renders him relatively sane again. As two negative make a positive, madness compounded by madness could render sanity.

  • @aworldanimation

Do you want to know a even more disturbing theory?
The reasons why Walter can't wear the Mask?
1 theory) He doesn't need it. The
Mask releases your deepest wishes, erasing the elements of your brain that would limit you (fear, Shame, ecc)
Walter is already like this. He's
    Already limitless.
So, even wearing the mask, there would't be anithing to release.
2 theory) the second theory, the really fucked up one, is... interesting
He is... a son of the mask.
Like in the second movie, a Human wearing the mask had sex and the result was our villain.
That would explain his super Human strenght and his invincibility.
And why He can't wear the mask. It's already part of him.

As interesting as a Mask horror movie would be, we must keep in mind why it is they made the 90s film a comedy in the first place. Three different horror scripts were submitted, and the studio didn't like any of them. Eventually, they decided this direction wasn't working for them and took it down a different path. I'm not trying to say that it'd be a bad idea, I'm sure it would be great if done right, but we might want to keep that in mind.

I always thought that Walter was in many ways the opposite of the mask- Silent and sombre. At the time (back in the 90's) I toyed with the idea that walter was a mask wearing a person rather than the other way around. I liked the original GN because it was dark and at times comedic. Strangely, I dont dislike the movie, which is more than I can say for the recent Ghost in the shell.

See, the thing is that Loki was never actually crazy... at least, not in comparison to the rest of the Norse gods. Thor was pretty unhinged if you really look at him.
It's hard to accurately describe where exactly Loki's personality and motives lie, outside of making mischief and taking things too far. In that vein, I can see him getting bored and leaving a tool of mass mischief and destruction in Midgard to just watch what would happen, but it had nothing to do with being crazy or anything.

I think the Critic here missed a big point underlying the comics. The point of the mask, was you put on this relic, to put on your true self, it allowed every little passing thought to be real from 'I want to kill that guy over there' to 'I was screwed over' to 'That would be fun!', so by putting on The Mask, you take off the one you have so carefully constructed for society, the one that smiles when you get screwed over by absurd prices, the one that thanks the people that rob you, the one that suppresses all those dark desires. The reason the Mask didn't work for Walter, he did everything he wanted to do, he had no public facade, he didn't need one. The Mask had nothing to latch on to, nothing that he needed to take off his face for, he was free to begin with, not repressed.
Personally I think the comics can co-exist nicely with the film, much like Spawn, Todd McFarline created all three media stunts at the same time, the Comic, The HBO animated series and the Movie, and he wanted each to tell it's own story so people wouldn't need the other to be satisfied, The comic was it's own contained universe, the movie was it's own universe, the HBO series started off on its own universe (The animated series was awesome by the by.) So, yeah the Mask movie can co-exist happily with it's comic book brother. The message of the movie may have been skewed a tad but, it was it's own arc, and universe, you don't need the comics to understand the movie.

John P Actually, my interpretation is The Mask shoot down the Superego therefore, the Ego(who regulate the behavior of the person beetween the Id desires and the Superego norms) doesn't have to regulate nothing because the Superego is not anymore and then the person is now "controlled" by his Id.
Just like in some cartoons, your Id is that devil that comes up and is controlled by pure instints and the Superego is the angel who is "controlled" by the morals nd cultural norms and you are the Ego whe is in the meedle and regulates beetween them both. The Ego is not the good side, the Ego is just the combination of the Id and the Superego.

    The Mask Returns

The perfect story to bring back to life the way it was intended to be on the silver screen from the comics. This story and these directors all have the perfect balance of dark and twistedness to fit with each other perfectly in the ride of a lifetime. The movie will be equally as entertaining as the comics and keep you intrigued to find out what happens next if you haven't already read the comics. Movies that these directors have worked on that fits perfectly with the tone for the comic book Mask story are:
    -Sin City
-Sin City: A dame to kill for
    -Crimson Peak
    -Insidious

+dunkanbulk14 he actually fought Lobo once. they fought in a Bloody standstill(literally with only their heads using knives in their tongues at one point) and even then The Mask had the edge.

So The Mask is basically like Deadpool. An insane character who is phenomenally indestructible, who operates on cartoon logic, who swears a lot and uses guns, knives and explosives that he summon out of nowhere and breaks the 4th wall (except the Mask only does that occasionally in the film and cartoon series whilst Deadpool breaks 4th wall all the time in both the comics, the movie and the games). In actual fact, they're both very different characters who share the same violent yet very comedic nature.

The mask is WAY more mean spirited and uncomfortable, deadpool has a very lighthearted playfulness that makes him seem childish and immature, but also like able. He is a relatable character who a reader can route for. In the comics, big head is a little funny, but is not someone you are supposed to relate too. He is destructive and cruel, much like the joker, and the effects of cartoony attacks on regular people, like the critic said, is deeply disturbing. When you read deadpool you laugh or feel empathy for him, when you read the mask, you laugh a little but also cringe.

The reason why the comics are violent and dark is because the mask takes the personality of the person that has the mask

The Mask itself is also evil, as once it's got you hooked, it starts gradually taking over and perverting your desires.
The Kids each got rid of it the moment they realized it was pushing them in directions they didn't want to go (and none of them actually wanted to hurt/kill people. They just wanted to have fun). where as Kelloway and Kathy had both already committed murder/wanted to kill people, so they went straight for murder once they had power. Same as the mob-boss version, except he was willing to target innocent people, where as Kelloway and Kathy at least tried to target criminals that deserved death.
mean while the Dad only killed a single person, and it was an accident (the guy had a heart attack due to shock). (the girl though went full Carrie once she got the Mask until her dad persuaded her to take it off).
it also has no qalms about using it's user as a suicide drone if it's completely dominated them and took them over, in order to protect itself. (which does make one wonder if the Mask does have limits based on it's user's stamina. Since you'd think once it had completely taken over the users body, like it did in the final arc, that it would simply keep the mask on all the time, but still had to remove itself periodically to let the host rest (the final host was barely more than a zombie by the point the Mask had him suicide himself into the police force while it was safely leaving the country for parts unknown).
