What makes this man the best is I know when I click on something new I've never seen him play its not going to sound like the countless other reditions, it will sound unique and this is a prime example. Like Mozarts Turkish March he made it OG and I love it.

First reference is to Beethoven's Concerto in C minor. Gould demonstrates as he plays piano and orchestral lines, sometimes adding more by singing. The second and third videos address Beethoven's "Tempest Sonata" The cohesive effect of consistent tempo is obvious. Any student of musical performance would benefit from listening to Gould's insights. Great privilege to be here today. Thank you!
Yes! Gould did play as if 12 pianists were playing the piano: each one of these 12 pianists is telling one finger what to do... I know I am committing musical suicide by admitting my indifference to Her J.S. Bach. Each one Gould’s fingers seems to be unaware of the existence of the remaining 9 fingers. Gould was not human... l am full of admiration and ENVY toward Gould.

that's because he isn't playing to anyone else. The music becomes his hands and fingers (or vice versa). He wants to make a recording of the work, but he doesn't really want people there.

I like Kempff's version. The slower tempo, combined with a more lyrical approach, reserves the mystery in this piece that I believe is inherent in the spirit of the movement. Gould is brilliant though.

i've never seen any tempest coming down slowly. Unless you think that Glenn Gould wasni able to play like Kempf!
Sean Contin, he is a genius playing it at this tempo, there's nothing lyrical about this 3rd movement. I have heard many versions, and their interpretation of it, if you are too much in the "strict' side following the rules on this you're missing the point, there's nothing like him playing this sonata, all the others fade in comparison.
Gould's plays this movement with a rhythmic "drive" which seems to convey the feeling of restlessness. Beethoven wrote this sonata when he was a relatively young man and probably had the same feeling of restlessness. Next time I see Ludwig, I'll ask him if that's the case.

Glen's depiction here is most likely closer to what Beethoven would have played given the historical context and the mending of the classical period into more of the romantic. Beethoven's style in a lot of his work may have been a bit more classical style in terms of tempo and style. Listen to glen goulds interpretation of Beethovens work. You'll understand better.
Best I've heard, everyone else plays it the same way its boring. Very nice to hear it in a different style and Zuhair you are no english major obvioulsy.
Glenn is the most accurate interpreter of Bach and Beethoven because the first had no legato at all and the latter had all his learning in the same century Bach lived and died i.e. 1700s ! So, yes, Glen Gould is by far the closest interpreter of Bach and Beethoven !
