This is the way Beethoven should be played! The drive, the excitement, and energy! You are channeling Beethoven!! Every line of counterpoint brought out with the right voicing. Clean and clear always. Perfect precise application of pedal to bring out the richness of the harmony.
Any slower and this piece seems plodding, IMO. I think it’s the wash of harmonies that Beethoven was after, as in so many other of his early and mid period sonatas. You have to have the texture subordinated to the harmonies and you can’t do that if you’re playing it like a pensive piece. Schindler said Beethoven played it in a very fast and driving manner, like a Presto Agitato, or words to that effect.
I'll be frank to admit that I wasn't sure what was so great about Say before, but once I heard the interpretation of this piece compared to other favorite pianists, this is one above.
Beethoven's music generally is unique with its impossible combination of tragedy and delight at a time. Very and very few can convey this miracle of Beethoven. Fazil did it in full!
This interpretation is... relentless. It does not give a single moment for the listener to breathe, and I mean this in a good way, it makes it so gripping! Contrast this with Sokolov's interpretation which is more about sheer force and intensity. Both are very good in their own distinct ways.
That's why Ludwig made the big bucks. And the pianist? Look at him, his face, his posture, he's totally within it. It's poring out of his soul in a wordless language we all understand though cannot speak.

He’s actually playing about 5% too fast, not the tempo or Gefühl Beethoven intended.
