I had one of the earlier formbot kits (July 2022). Good to see they've upgraded a lot of the componenets (e.g. Stainless fastners) so it's now a perectly functional kit, but tbh that's why you go with LDO as it will work out of the box instead of being iterated and customers getting a mystery box.
Same story here (march 2021 kit) - it got definitely better, but still room for improvement

I would definitely choose the LDO kit. I've purchased 2 other LDO kits, a Prusa kit, and done self sourcing for a custom printer. If I'm going to buy a kit, I don't want to have to source more pieces just to complete the build.

Since when 1EUR=1USD? The prices are basically the same unit wise, but different coins, which makes it more expensive in EU than in the US from the start.
The LDO kit has bad quality parts, it is not worth half the money they are asking for it, but this is normal nowadays, it called "Bait and Switch", send youtoubers free high quality kits, send a few more to early buyers, then shit on the rest by changing components.
For example, the magnetic sheet included in my LDO kit demagnetized at 90 degrees Celsius, take that for quality. And the problems didn't stop there.

By many users you mean the youtubers and a few lucky first buyers, cause the Voron "community" is missing from the web.
Bought it from Lecktor, don't think the seller really matter since the package was in the original unopened box from LDO, it even had their branded shipping tape.
If you live in the EU colonies you will always spend more that one who lives in an EU country for the same thing. By colonies I mean those countries who are officially in the EU but not in Schengen and don't have EUR as coin.
Anyways, for me, Voron is a dead and stupid project, too bad it is the one who made a printer that I really wanted from the specs, the V0.1. But after the experience, I will spend my money on something else.

It is the fault of LDO if they send shit in Romania but good stuff in other places. It is called "double standard" !
The kit quality does not justify the cost!, even 685EUR is waay to much for it. The real price should be around 150-200EUR for that crappy quality.
The magnetic sheet was just the beginning, the extruder motor is different from the ones in the videos on youtube and skips steps (got to about 14mm^3 max with PLA at 250 degC), the "original BMG" extruder gears are shittier than a clone which I bought for 5EUR, the 24VDC cable powering the SKR is super thin and gets warm making it fire prone and so on...
Verdict: LDO SHIT KIT.

Great video, can't wait for part 2. I picked up a formbot kit last year (before they included the prebuilt wiring) and it has been running like a champ. I have even used it to print the parts out for my new Voron Trident build that I finished this week.
I did have to change my extruder motor on my V0 from the moons to LDO motors because the moons one died on me. I also have some spare A/B LDO motors ready to replace as soon as the Oukeda motors die. But overall it has been a fantastic build, and I'm happy to have a hybrid Formbot/LDO printer.

Great video, I really enjoyed watching this and the side by side comparison is really great.
I've ordered the formbot kit because I love to tinker and as a mechanical engineer, electronics/wiring is my weakest point and this is a great way to learn it.
Thanks Christian! Same here (mech engineer, electronics and wiring a weak spot) - building/tuning 3D printers helped me a lot there, but I also enjoyed the plug and play of the LDO Kit. Tinkering with the Formbot kit also is a lot of fun (see my videos from last year)

My Voron from LDO is my second 3D printer, and I think I made the right decision. If someone already has all the tools and experience to deal with the formbot then its probably better, but if you want something that ships fast and works then LDO is a solid choice

This is probably the most well produced 3d printing video I've ever seen. I clicked the bell, which isn't something I ever do. Now I just wish I had seen this before I ordered my formbot kit!

@@247printing I actually already did the build. The kit wasn't bad except ufortunately the extruder gears failed quickly. Waiting on genuine bondtech replacements.
I might have still gone with the Formbot kit, but there are a few things I would have upgraded right out of the gate like linear rail backers, the kirigami bed, and now in hindsight the extruder parts.

@@247printingWhatever the fault is its really hard for me to see. No actual visible defects.
When it was running it was grinding off little flakes of the gears, and while I can't see the imperfection I can feel resistance just pulling filament through. It's possible I overtightened the ABmini which caused them to damage themselves, but in any case they have to be replaced.
They also weren't properly aligning with the filament path which probably contributed.
I passed on Voron and built a Pro 3D V-King 400 and self-sourced the best quality parts I could get my hands on, I paid a lot more including some hefty shipping charges but I havent had to replace or upgrade a single thing

I am currently teaching the kids to read and coming across dozens of these as they simply read what is written. Having given most of it no notice before each one is more entertaining than the last. @@247printing There are ‘rules’ to follow that inform different sounds, but you have to learn and remember them. Like e after a vowel makes it say it’s name. ‘I’ say ‘eye’ instead of ‘eh’ so it L’eye’K instead of L’icky’. Who ever decided all this was an ass who wanted to pretend to be better than everyone else who didn’t know the rules, you know class distinctions.
Phil Hendrie is a great and very very talented comedian who does the voice of all the people on his live show in real-time. He has a character who reads everything literally and it is worth checking out while you build more printers.

Regarding the products LDO is the winner for me. Looks a LOT more hassle free than the formbot kit. Also proper tools and accessories are easily closing the 100$ gap.

Good vid. Great comparison. I went for an LDO. My only complaint was the DOA BTT SKR board, but the supplier changed it out and I haven't had any issues.....oh there were some metal chips left in the extrusion threaded holes, so check and clean your extrusions before assembly.

Glad to see you get the giant hand print on the back of all Formbot build plates! (mine came with a rather large one on the back, a whole hand!)
As for Formbot versus LDO, based on my experience with Formbot's Trident 300 kit, I'd probably cough up the extra $200ish CAD for an LDO kit if I were to build a v0. One thing is that for Trident and v2.4 kits Formbot includes bottom panels that are known for warping shortly after you power on the print bed - hopefully this isn't an issue with LDO's kits. Big thing that's a selling point for me though is that with the LDO kit you are getting actual properly spec'd parts versus Formbot where they tend to take the occasional shortcut on things.
I'm definitely curious for part two!

Excellent information. Thanks! IMO, the better parts quality and wiring planning make the difference between a pleasant experience and a potentially very frustrating one. I have a Prusa Mk3s+ as my first printer and an Ender 3 Pro I built (and upgraded...a lot) for family. Given the choices I had to make and considering the cost in time and upgrade parts to get the Ender close to the Prusa for longevity and performance, I would not hesitate to spend the money on another Prusa over a Creality in any future build. I will have to see if I can pick up one of the LDO 0.1 kits for printing some materials that are harder for the Prusa.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience and thoughts! The tinkering/upgrading (your Ender example vs Prusa) might be fun and a lot to learn. But yeah: It's a lot of time to invest... I absolutely love the overall experience I have with my Prusa, but I don't want to miss the upgrading and tinkering on the other printers either.
I am right now watching my LDO V0.1 printing the voron cube. The assembly was pretty straight forward, the software setup took a bit more time for me. Who ever wants do build a voron: Do what the manual is telling you to do. Read it multiple times to verify the next step in every detail. When ever i did not go 100% regarding the manual, i did regret it later.
I got some parts laying around like the hemera, mosquito hotend, a cfk tube and some ominously 247 print parts. Might even go complete fanless on the hotend with some ceramic parts, but time will tell. Hopefully gonna speed up that thing soon :)

Thank ypu for the great video. A year has passed and there are now aluminium parts on the market for about 160 zo use instead of the ABS. What fo you think of that. Would it make sense especially on parts like frame/belt connections?
Thank you for watching and commenting. It really depends. For the motor drives the thermal mass of alu parts helps to keep them cooler actually (did some private testing on this). For Idlers I can't tell if there is much of a difference, but nice to have for sure. For moved parts / accelerated masses it depends on the design and weight. What I've seen so far: Not recommended, as they just copy the design of the printed parts. I'll actually dive very deep into this topic some time this year :-)

The one aspect not covered in this video is the customer service comparison. Perhaps, reachout to both and see how quickly you get a response. I personally know the LDO service is worth the extra cost + better components.
I dealt with the Formbot service last year and it was ok. They are ready for compromises and customization. There is no such as an LDO service here, as you contact the reseller - normally established companies, which is a plus 👍
Seems to be the formbot would be my choice, since I like to "tinker" and wouldn't mind the extra work for wiring and switching up cooling fans. I have a lot of wiring and connectors laying around from other projects. Along with heatshrink and solder.

I just received my formbot V0.1 kit and I can confirm the cooling fans are now SUNON fans so thats a big upgrade over these no name ones seen in the video

I was quite skeptical about the Formbot kit considering its much lower price than the LDO one, but now I think I can safely go for it.

Depending on the part cooling fans you got: I’d change them. Maybe also the motors, but for casual fast printing they are sufficient (oudeka) - though: idle noise…

@@hardcorexy8718 it's honestly not that bad if you flip the skr e3 the 24v wires are long enough and then you only have to solder the fans. The printer prints amazing. Perfect parts at 150mm/s 10000mm/s^2. My only issue has been cooling but the better fans will probably help there. I've gotten around this by printing lots of parts at once.
I have the formbot kit, I bought it in Aug last year and printed like crazy on it ever since, especially during the Christmas season. I ended up having to replace my fans (mine came with sunon and they weren't very good.) and I had to change my extruder motor (Moons) to the LDO motors. The A/B oukeda motors seem to be fine, but I did buy some spare LDO ones in case they go out.
I should build one...
Is there a supplyer who adresses these "flaws" on both kits, like using a Revo head, higher quality rails, top notch steppers, etcetera?
LDO looks like a winner to me
Hard to say in an absolute manner - depends on the time/hassles you are willing to spend, on your skills concerning wiring and if you have appropriate tools. You can definitely build a Formbot 0.1 as good as the LDO 0.1 for less money, but you need time and efforts to achieve this - matter of "taste and personal goals (tinkering)" in my opinion.
Thank you for the great video and really necessary information for new comers to Voron!! I just finished building the formbot kit as you published the video. I was having EXACTLY the same issue with the linear rail wiggle. I thought I did something wrong in my build. I am also having a bit of issue with extrusion because the extruder skip too easy despite being an dual-gear extruder. And They were not even grinding the filament, just slipping. Which makes me believe that the extruder gears in the formbot kit may have done too much deburr.... do you experience the same and could you give your comment on this?

@@247printing I got the Phaetus Dragon standard flow hotend. I think it is the same one as you showed in the video! I tried several cold pulls and also swapping the nozzle with a e3D 0.4mm, but the result turned out to be the same.
@@247printing Just a quick update. It turned out that the problem was not enough current -- I am building a 3D printer for the first time and puzzled by the printer.cfg file. There I was not able to find the option for the motor I used so I took the 0.4A for 1.8 degree LDO motor. It turned out that I need to increase it to 0.7 and problem solved. Would it be possible for you to somehow share your printer.cfg file? I think for the formbot kit it will be really useful for someone who builds it for the first time.

Ever since I learned that LDO seems to send out review kits that are different to what they sell to customers I have gotten suspicious. Has this happened to anybody else? Specifically the wiring is usually not prepared and a spool is provided instead.
You forgot a key difference… support after purchase.
LDO has been phenomenal in post-purchase support, and Jason has done right by the community at every turn. LDO hasn’t been “flawless” per say, but they have done everything in their power to fix any fails that arise, as well as being up-front about said fails instead of trying to sweep them under the rug.
I’ve not heard great things about Formbot’s support, but I’ve also not heard a lot about their support in general, so it may well be a case of “no news is good news” outside of the negative things I’ve heard.
For clarification and record, this is my personal opinion, which doesn’t necessarily reflect the views of the Voron team.
Thanks a lot for your comment! The support is hard to judge from my side as I am in contact with Jason, Caribou3D and Formbot anyways. LDO has the advantage of Jason‘s/LDO‘s community efforts and their resellers all over the world - that has been pointed out. Formbot also is open for customizing their kits to your needs or giving refunds when their is a problem. But they don’t have the dealer network and they don’t have a Jason :) there was no direct evaluation of the customer support, I agree, but the general conditions should be quite clear. For future reviews I think about detailing this topic a bit more, there are ways to test it and it’s interesting - thanks for bringing this up!

I am considering the formbot one, cuz I am located in Czechia, but I am not sure. I only built a Prusa from kit and have no experience with soldering or wiring anything...

Yes, they came with raspberry pi 3b - I saw vendors for the LDO Kit stating if they send with or without the PI.

Any word on how corrosion resistant the black fasteners from LDO are? Maybe test a spare from the kit. I know they look nice, but if they rust like old Prusa stuff did it's a fat no from me.
I'll ask Jason from LDO about this - I believe I won't have the time to set up and execute a viable corrosion test for the fasteners. Where do you live? Indoors (southern Germany) I never had any corrosion problems with any type of fastener here. Humidity, depending on season, varies between 20% to 60%.
@@247printing Texas, where it's anywhere from everything is sticky to why is my skin feel like sandpaper. Thomas Sanladerer also had issues with block oxide fasteners rusting, and he runs a dehumidifier in the room with his printers.

Thats strange, the bolts and nuts in my formbot kit where also black and not stainless steel, as you have shown ^^
Same for me in the first Fombot Kit - they change the parts quite often in between, depending on the actual sources for the parts. The Oukeda motors are going to be changes soon also and they added the tools for the Dragon HighFlow.
I have all the skills and experience required to do the wiring for the formbot kit, but coming with lower tier parts is a complete deal breaker (maybe). The 70% larger price tag of the LDO kitmight change my mind once I'm ready to purchase one.
My LDO kit v0.1 cost 1000EUR with VAT and shipping, so eff it!
I also had lot's of problems, like the magnet sheet demagnetizing or the fact that the extruder motor is shit.
You can get a fysect kit for 500EUR, which is what I will be doing once I manage to sell some of my other printers.
Where do you live and where did you order? Locally sourced in Germany (Caribou3D) it's 685€ (inkl. VAT) + national shipping ~7€.

@@247printing ordered from lecktor, shipping was 90EUR, the kit was 685EUR , plus 19% VAT on both.
Caribou had the same outrageous shipping charges, they were actually 10 EUR more expensive.

I’m just curious, why do they specify ABS rather than another material, such as PETG?
The Voron approach is “no compromises” and concerning temperatures in the closed build space and rigidity/stiffness it’s ABS here
@@247printing thank you for the response. I enjoyed the video and I’m considering building a Voron for my next printer. I asked about PETG because I was under the impression that it is usually superior in mechanical properties to ABS. I guess I’ll have to do more research, though.

Yes, but in my case (like stated) not for the toolhead and some were useless concerning proper/practical lengths.

Weil das LDO Kit kostet hier ja rund ~1500€ und das Formbot-Kit bekommt man schon für ~700$ plus Versand. Und bei dem Formbot Kit wäre das Dragon HF Hotend dabei, bei dem LDO Kit ist gar keines dabei. Einzige Nachteil ist, dass das Formbot Kit aus China verschickt wird
Ich selber habe kein Formbot Trident kit gebaut/getestet, würde aber sagen: Ja, kann man machen. Gibts für $859 (300mm) direkt vom Czech warehouse (taxes/Versand!) auf formbot3d.com

Haha yeah, I am always switching between two worlds, but I love the MK3S and the workflow. When I don't need parts quickly, I just let it run :)
Besides the fans, the Formbot kit looks okay. No real deal breaker included.
The LDO is superior though. Really no big difference.

The LDO kit costs in germany around 685€..the Formbot Kit from CZ warehouse 365€..so 300 € more for a better wiring and a doublesided PEI? not a hard decision...
If you are a tinkerer and if you have the skills/tools/patience for crimping, wiring and re-sourcing for some stuff, you can definitely go for the Formbot kit - I did that twice with my own money and I don't regret it. I have all the tools and accessory at hand (also better fans and motors) to make it great, but all that also costs money and more importantly: additional time. I can totally understand that people might prefer the LDO kit for less hassle and for saving the time for the efforts involved. The build was REALLY very convenient - depends on the customer and his claims. There is no winner real/absolute winner in my opinion.
@@247printing honestly...Vorons are meant to self source...so kits are already a huge advantage..and someone who cant even crimp( and a crimp tool is the only tool you need beside the hexdrivers to build the kit) shouldnt even think about a Voron...its a printer for Tinker. Fans: i just build a V2..all motors were Moons and all Fans were Sunnons.

Do I understand correctly that on top of the kit you still need to get the printed parts? Why are companies not just supplying complete kits? Is there other stuff still needed on top?
Please check out vorondesign.com - these are DIY printers initially meant for self-sourcing. Some companies offer kits for the hardware and electronics
@@247printing I know Voron, but I dislike the requirement to self-source and hence applaud the advent of decent kits. Still, a good kit should contain EVERYTHING a beginner needs to build the thing. I know you can get printed parts from other Voron users, but then again you are sourcing from multiple sources and that's just a hassle I would not want. It's also why I considered it stupid that Ratrig was providing everything for their printer, except the board to mount the electronics to. Common, EVERYTHING means EVERYTHING!
