minivan on rails, Vaser Valley Railway, Romania

- The Vaser Valley Railway is a narrow gauge forest railway in the Carpathian mountains in Romania. Private railcar 01 CALLATIS has been converted from a Ford road van. The driver handles ignition, gears and accelerator pedal as in a normal car, while the steering wheel works on the brakes. The railcar has a reverse gear, but this is used only for short distances. When the railcar needs to change direction for a longer journey, it is turned on the spot by means of a plate that can be lowered on the rails at the gravity center of the railcar.
Everyone else: "But infrastructure is so expensive!"
*Romania*: "Hold my beer, bro."
Jared H I bet it's private owned by hobbyst, not used for public transport, operated on old abandoned rails.
@@dontbesoserious1 well it's actually on an old railway where you can take trips with an old small steam train named "Cozia"
Someone rich can effort expensive works for private infrastructures like that.

I enjoyed there was no commentary or narration; just the video and however you see it
Slow down there Duke they just transitioned from steam minivans they still have a good 60 years to the magleveevan.
@@IronFanJoe It would be Japen, they did that before WW2 by putting a steam bus on the mainline in Hokkaido when their older steam locomotive needs to be move to mainland island to put heavier loads. No one pull that kind of trick again until in atleast 30 years later.

Here this guy has both
It's only one of those things. To have both, instead of the jack and swivel method used here, hydraulically raised and lowered rail wheels would need to be engineered. Of course this is easy to say, no intention to take away from the ingenuity from limited materials seen in the video.
So this is a car path in the carpathians?

Somehow this is one of the coolest things I've ever seen?? He even used a car alarm hooked up to the signal switch as a horn. I would completely enjoy driving that around all day, thank you for sharing this with us
@ The method to do an half-turn is so ingenious! A bit physical to realize, but so simple in the idea!
The horn is on the end of the signal switch in one of those vans anyway
Human
@@QUIX4U I think their main point is that the anti-theft alarm as a horn is amazing.
Please, don't attack them so much! Maybe they didn't see it well (I have only seen it there on Iveco buses and very very old cars myself. Not a '90s transit van. They probably weren't looking well. Maybe they watched in low-resolution due to poor internet?)
There are so many reasons to not notice the horn button placement, seeing as it's near universal. There are no reasons to yell at somebody over a fucking misunderstanding in such a minor thing. Please, be nicer regarding what you say or say nothing at all.

I only mentioned (in passing to no one in particular) that at a precise point in the video - the HORN BUTTON - on the LH Stalk - is easily seen.
I never "aimed it' at any one person or viewer in particular - but obviously YOU assumed that I had.
An assumption YOU made (totally in error), but now that I see that you yourself have absolutely NOTHING of value to add to TH-cam (by way of any uploaded video)
Then with a totally blank channel & membership profile (that you appear as) without even ONE video to add any value to your being a (worthwhile) member of TH-cam, - your total lack of video content means that that others cannot see or LEARN FROM anything you ADDED to TH-cam but rather that you are a no-named idiot abusing others for commenting with USEFULL (added value) content such as "where to see the horn button - in the video's timeline (instead of abusing comments put there in that general observation fashion - by others who can see that stuff) whilst hidding behind a wall of nonsense - with zero content on your own channel - whilst you abuse others who do have content - who are also making a helpful comment - on another's video - done with such absolutely foul & crass comments as the one you used above here.. with?
OMG - are you for real.. or just a pussy pusher?
Using obnoxious rubbish - & verbal written abuse - worded as:

no reasons to yell at somebody over a fucking misunderstanding
[unquote]
When - after all - it was ONLY your own misunderstanding at how the comment was made - which was not attacking any person in particular .. ?
To have you blurt out in such rude fashion - using foul language - to get your idiotic nonsensical point across?
Oh how utterly STUUUUUUUpid - did you appear there with your useless responce?

That little rail line is better than most lines here in the US and that Ford train moves faster than most of Amtrak rolling stock.
Lmao very true, as a European that lived in Chicago for a few years, the cta was very picturesc but any transit outside of it was fucking awful.
June 11, 2019----Really interesting and educational video and thanks for showing it. In America, the railroads use trucks the same way, but have wheels which can be lowered on the front/back of the vehicle and then used on the tracks. When no longer needed for riding the rails, the wheels are raised with truck being driven normally on the road.
There are no roads in that area....🙏!
There I suppose aren't roads to ride wheels on so ......
He makes a cross at 0:29 before heading out lol : )
Oh God, that is terrifying. 😭😂😂 Even the guy who drives it is like, fuck dude, hope this thing makes it! It IS a Ford, after all.
Maybe it was a church near becouse the romanian tradition is to make a cross when you see a church to pray to god!
This is the Carpathian Mountains. Maybe the rails go past Dracula's Castle?
@@napoleonsolo5929 im tired of these "Dracula" jokes
It's a Christian habit around here for people to make a cross before a journey. Some do it when exiting the house, some when passing churches... it does NOT symbolize his lack of trust in the contraption he's driving.
so cool man. This can't be too expensive to build and it could be a great tourist attraction

British Rail - the brexit years. Get another two, cut the cab off one, weld in a plate, and you have a DMU.
Sounds like the 2.5 diesel, aka the bag of hammers in a cement mixer.
I can't decide whether it deserves a Darwin awards Unit Citation or a Kitbashing Nobel Prize.
😴
Definitely the kitbashing prize. That man built his own rail passenger trolley out of railyard scrap and a junkyard minivan. All of the normal van equipment worked from what I can tell and he even has a CB radio to give him warnings about other trains and requests of passengers. That amount of work and ingenuity isn't easy. And he can operate it by himself. Respect.
Reminds me of the railbuses British Rail made as an inexpensive stopgap measure to replace 1st generation DMUs called `Pacers'
They were (and are since they are still in operation) basically a bus body (Leyland National) on a freight vehicle underframe (only 4 wheels per car - no bogies).
They could operate in both directions though!
sounds very comfy
