  • The Blue Devils 2014 record breaking show "Felliniesque" from MY point of view! This was very close to finals week so you're getting to see the show as it was performed at its peak. Enjoy!
    Special thanks to Dylan Martin for letting me use his camera for this video.

    9:14 Bravo! Playing those triplets accurately at that speed, on the move in that octave with good tone, is dang tough!

    I'm a tuba player, and even the Euph part gives me chills. :D
    Well, done with the show! I'm actually doing my first year of corps with Genesis!
    But videos like these keep me going & make me want something like this more & more. Thank you!

      Right on man! It's really tough at first but just push through those first few weeks and you'll come out a better person for it. You'll never remember how much your body hurt at the end but you will remember all the funny moments and the friendships you built along the way. You'll be rewarded for all your hard work one day, if not today.

    Loved it. Great video, and fantastic job too of course.
    I do have a question though, out of simple curiosity. Why is it before you (or anyone else for that matter) put your instrument down, you cover all the valves and push them down. Is there a reason for that?

    • @KalebBirdsong
      @KalebBirdsong  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We slam the valves to give a little more solid grip when we rip the horn down. It would feel awkward just bringing down that heavy of a horn with only moving your wrists. Also, you could look at it as a simple prep that keeps the sections horn snaps in time like a prep beat or something. Thanks for the question and for watching!

    I love the sound of a euphonium when played right but I don't think I can do it so I stick with trumpet and I love my trumpet plus iv worked to hard on my trumpet to switch

    • @G5xgajsjY793
      @G5xgajsjY793 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this is quite a bit late but there is no reason why you can't do both. Just practice them both when you have ample free time. I am a euphonium player and bought a cheap trumpet just to have fun and mess around with but playing it actually exposed some flaws I had on euphonium that I was not aware of that the trumpet amplified and has helped me become much better at music in general.

    Great job last summer and CONGRATZ ON THE 99.65! Watched the show at finals. How heavy is the System Blue Euph Hybrid? I use a Yamaha Euph right now, and my director is planning on switching my yamaha for a system blue. I've heard they are really great in both ends of the playing scale. Thanks for taking your time to read this.

    • @KalebBirdsong
      @KalebBirdsong  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      This horn is a bit heavier that the tiny yamahas but it feels pretty well balanced. Its around 10 lbs I'm guessing??

    i am a euphonium player, and i am thinking about being in a junior drum corps for 8-10 graders, but i was wondering if there were many high school students in 11th or 12th grade in drum corps like this. i have been told that most people usually are in college when they make it, unless they are exceptionally talented.

    • @KalebBirdsong
      @KalebBirdsong  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most members are around 20 years old but there are exceptions to people as young as 16 and 17. I made the corps myself when I was 16. If your talented and mature enough for the social setting of being around a bunch of college aged kids then you should have no problem. Hope this helps! Go try out for BD…somewhere...ANYWHERE! :)

    Hey Kaleb, would you happen to know if the GoPro is very durable ? As in if it was dropped on the field during a run and gets kicked around, would it still work perfectly? I'm planning on buying one for myself for the tour. Btw I'll be playing euphonium for BDB..your video is awesome man.

    • @KalebBirdsong
      @KalebBirdsong  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Mike! Do it up this summer! Unfortunately, I only borrowed the GoPro for this run but from what I could tell, it seemed pretty sturdy. The camera sat inside a plastic case that attached to the head strap. I had a hat on top of long hair and did't feel like it was going to fall off at all.

    • @yeti4269
      @yeti4269 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Do I know the beginning of tour is less than 3 weeks away, but yes it is durable. I've dropped it on concrete before without a case and nothing bad happened. See you sometime, I'm with Music City this summer.

    Wish I could march drum corp. But it seems my marching days are over. :/ Unless I go to a university, even then, not sure if I'll still be good enough to get in since I haven't played in almost a year. I'd say I was only slightly about average as a euphonium player.

    any tips for building strength for keeping the horn up?

    • @KalebBirdsong
      @KalebBirdsong  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would say general weight lifting and pushups would help a lot. When we would have to hold them up for a long time, my lats would start screaming so I would also suggest maybe pull ups and lat bar pull downs. I'm no exercise guru or anything but I hope this helps!
