Had the exact same intermittent code 68 problem on my 2014 Meriva B, and I changed the battery after reading the same forums. I'm also fed up with working under a car for the same reasons as you. So the upshot is it cost me £1500 at Vauxhall main dealers for new assembly, they will include charging you for diagnosing. I tried a couple of smaller garages but they weren't interested in looking.
£1500 eeeeek
Easy fix in my case, I had exactly the same issue. - Just needed the power steering fluid changing. Got a new bottle of fluid and a cooking syringe to suck out the fluid from the reservoir. I topped up the fluid, turned the wheel to pump it through the system and kept repeating until the new fluid was used up. Vauxhall quoted £1500 for replacement pump. and I even got a second opinion but I couldn't afford that! I'm glad I ignored Vauxhall when a £10 bottle of fluid fixed it DEFINITELY START HERE BEFORE NEW BATTERIES ETC.!
Also @baconbutties thank you for your videos, they've been great, very clear and in depth!
How long has it lasted since fluid change
@@baconbuttties changed the fluid 11 months ago and no issues since!!
I was so annoyed as it was a new car to me, and this issue came up after 1 month of driving it (interestingly on the hottest day of the year.) after the high quote from the garage I SORNed the car while I decided what I should do. In the end I thought I’d get a fresh MOT and try and get rid of it for cheap. It drove without issue to the MOT (now in winter and snowy). I thought that the temperature was the only variable so hoped that fresh fluid would fix it, perhaps it was just degrading in the hot weather. Also seems to fit with the problem going away after the car had cooled down but returning once up to temperature.
As I say, 11 months and it’s been fine, even over summer.
@@hallamcleverley7198 I think mine has gone as I have had code 68 about 15 times.
I also had the same intermittent fault 'Code 68 Service Power Steering' about four years ago. So I topped up the PS fluid to the level indicated on the PS dispstick (located in the cap of the PS fluid reservoir), and have had no problems since.
My wife's car had the exact same. It went while she was driving. It's a common fault. The pump was sent to London from Sheffield to be rewired. Total cost .. work..postage and rewire cost me £1100. Only had it repaired because it's automatic. BBC watchdog did a programme asking for a recall on merivas with this problem.
It's really expensive to fix 😱 and my cars only done 54 thousand miles
The Watchdog programme was regarding Meriva "A" models up to 2009 with fully electric EPS, and was actually a recall. But later this warranty came out from Vauxhall for EPS failures that might interest some people with Meriva B's 2010-2013:
"Date: 11/12/2019 Ref. number: Service / Warranty Bulletins / G_0000280745
Subject: Vauxhall Warranty Bulletin - W28-19 Special Coverage Bulletin - E191804390 Meriva B -
Power Steering Pump
2010-2013 Meriva - within 10 years or 100,000 miles"
Mine leaks when cold and I'm trying to keep it going as long as I can. I did have code 68 come up a few weeks ago, but it was more persistent and was caused by the alternator being faulty, another expensive job. A drive shaft need to be popped to get it out! It's a shame BBA Reman are no longer trading as I'd consider a refurb unit and they used to give a two year warranty. I think from a dealer, a new pump is nearer £1200-1500. Also not sure who to get to do the work. A lot of garages won't do it. I gather it involves dropping the front sub-frame. There TRW pumps seem to be known to fail, but I suppose the do a lot of work over their lifetime. I'd be interested to know the outcome of yours.
I think the Corsa D is also similar to the Meriva B in many aspects.
Yes I was looking for a Refurb myself. I can't see why a Garage wouldn't do the job even if the sub frame has to be lowered.
If you get the cars security codes, which Vauxhall can supply if you take the V5 with you to a dealer, they'll give you a small card with the codes on it. Then find a local auto electrician who is able to reprogram the cars ECU and the replacement steering unit using the security codes on the card. This is what I did with my older Meriva when the electric power steering failed, me fitting the steering unit was quite easy and it can be driven to the electricians with no power steering and the wires disconnected. Total cost including the new refurbished unit (unlimited warranty) & electricians time was about £300.
Hydro electric power steering on the Meriva B and the subframe has to lowered to be removed I believe. Apparently it's a pig of a job as it's tucked away
Having same problem with few extras. Driving all of sudden various lights came on, rev counter and speedo went of just about everything came on. Diagnostic said no communication with ecu. Removed and sent away for testing, call back said it was working, but i had them rebuild anyway. Fitted rebuilt unit drove for 30 minutes all ok then everting came up but this time had power steering and rev counter. Been suggested that the fault may be the abs has become faulty this can affect the ecu, send that away for testing . Also before that i will check the earth strap and renew the fluid. Great channel just about to subscribe to other one. Keep going all
Hope you get it sorted , It's a nightmare when the fault isn't straight forward.
Im curious if you found something?
I got also code 68 ,, , all lights on no speedo and km-counting , steering during driving goes from heavy to working fine to heavy to trying to steer the other way as i need to go ‼️
Even in a corner when i need to pull the wheel very heavy it start working for a second so i cut the corner , trying to correct is super heavy again .
Last week while driving the fault disappeared and everything worked fine for 2 days and again while i was driving slow on an even new road all lights came on again 😢.
I read many possible reasons for this problem but i can’t just start buying parts like abs module, steering pump , ecu , when it also can be the steering angle coil . Who is the cheapest but €400 is still a lot for me to flush down the drain.
@@CrazyDutch79 hello
I thought that we would leave the car for a short time after we took it to an auto electrician. They run and tested everything and could not find a fault. We have been driving around no problems until today. My initial thought was water getting into electrics. Thats why we did not use it, the roads around here and the driving rain flooding etc. Next thing 68 has come on again, this time i will get the fluid out put fresh in and see if that works, also will check the alternater before and after . Like you cant throw money at it. Will let you know. Did have the ecu tested and that was ok.
@@andyh4580 tyvm for your reaction , i was also thinking on an water problem.
When all problems disappeared for a few days it was dry and hot weather ,,, after a good rain it came back till now as it is raining 4days a week .
There must be one canbus related part that courses this problem.
At night while im sleeping i still hear the doorlocks open and close combined with that pingpingping sound 😂🤣😂🤣

Had code 68 come on and off intermittently over the last 8 years or so, i have a 2011, 1.7cdti , 130k on it. I think it was more common it came on pre 2019, the alternator and battery were replaced then. Didnt have it for a while, couple of years but now i think it has started to come on now and again. Cant say I've noticed any difference in feeling, power steering hasn't ever been looked at or serviced so is original. I guess i could have the power steering fluid changed and see if it doesn't come on anymore? does power steering fluid have a shelf life?
It would be worth changing power steering fluid as it does deteriorate over time. Code 68 and no power steering is when you have serious problems and it's extremely heavy when not working.
Seriously looking at buying an auto version, but I will definitely buy an extended warranty (not a cheap one either) to cover myself against such an eventuality as this!
I wanted a 1.4 Turbo auto version. Trouble is there's more things to go wrong.
So, having enjoyed a nice weekend in North Wales, got all buckled up with my family with the intent of driving home in our Vauxhall Meriva B 2011 1.7 CDTi automatic, turned key, NOTHING. Waited a minute, turned key and NOTHING but got a dreaded code 68 on dashboard. Cue 5 minutes of frantic google searching and tears dreading the worst when third attempt car started and we did the 95 mile journey home without stopping or stopping the engine. Have read weak battery could be cause and not getting power to the steering unit. Now, we HAD been sat eating chips with interior lights on and radio on (with engine off), but weird how car started 3rd time after turning everything off and waiting 5 minutes. Anyway, sorry for waffling. Am now terrified of the cars steering failing when next on the roads (haven't tested it today due to torrential rain). Got my battery tested at Halfords about 2 months ago after battery was low due to rear high level brake light not going out (Yuasa HSB110 Silver 12V car battery with 5 year guarantee, purchased Oct 2020), but that came back fine. So, now considering topping up power steering fluid as shown in your previous video. Will report back later, fingers crossed it won't pop up again. Just wanted to post my experience with Code 68 as no one else seems to have had a problem even starting the car. Thanks =)
Code 68 is one of the mire scary cpdes to have 😮 Im glad yours hasn't come back on.
Air in the system?
Did you check for leakage?
Yes, no leaks that I can see.
Had code 68 and no power steering ( engine warm or cold), 2015, only 30,000 miles. Made a massive mistake not checking the battery first. Put in a second hand pump (£300), then battery went. And now have a problem with car ECU not recognising the second hand pump and steering and code 68 showing!. At wits end with this car now, £850 spent!
I want to go back to the days where you could swap parts without having to code it to the car or not recognise it.
Hello, the loop for my rear seat, which is in the down position, has fallen off how do I put this back on? I can't raise the seat back up until I do
There was one loop missing on the middle seat on mine, but don't the seats have a secondary loop not just the one?
@@baconbuttties Yes they do but as the seat is locked in the down position it is sitting on it and I am unable to operate, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Did you manage to get your loop back on?
@@JohnDerbyshire-d1q mine was missing when I bought the car. You would most likely have to dismantle some of the seat to get it back on.
Can i druve it with heavy steering? Someone selling 2010 50k for 500 pound with 68 code
@@tik212 it's drivable like that. Just don't try parking in a tight spot.
Once you get moving its okay, any slow manoeuvres are difficult.
@baconbuttties thank you for that! How much would it cost to get new pump fitted?
Is car otherwise reliable?
@@tik212 Meriva of that age may have a few electrical issues.
New pump is expensive, and fitting it is a pain
Just saw the costs on your video :)
👍
Does the pomp make noise?
Maybe a little when warm
I own this car now. When you sold it did you tell him about the issue?
Yes I 100 percent told them.... And I explained to the driver that collected it for Copart..... It was another company that bought it and sold it through Copart
Ok thanks. Only bought a month ago. Bought it a month ago from Cardiff for £3200. Said he worked in a garage but said all he knew was about the car being a Cat N
@@garethsamuel588 I bought as a Cat N and then sold it for £750 as scrap as the power steering pump had gone. It was then on copart for weeks as nobody wanted to buy it and it was struggling to make more than £500.
I owned for 2 years
Thanks for letting me know. Seen the fault and the video popped up on goggle with your video. It was fine for 3 weeks then had the clutch done as that went. It only popped up after the battery was reconnected
@@garethsamuel588 oh strange that the clutch went, it was s lovely clutch before it went to copart.
You are am absolute gem! Today my meriva came up with code 68..Stopped the car for 10 minutes then on start up the code disappeared
I'll take it to my mechanic and get the battery checked first. My car is 2014 Do you think it could be the battery? Bearing in mind that the heat here in Spain can be very intense and does affect car batteries. Look forward to hearing your feedback Thanks
Ray
Hopefully it is the battery. Some people are lucky and it doesn't come back on. It could be a battery or it could be the power steering pump failing, it's a common fault. Also it's a pain to fix and can be expensive.
get a skoda diesel
