That Dragon Quest 3 is really something else. I bought that and sunk a year of my life into it. The NES and GBC versions. Best game in the series if you ask me.
Yes! Glad to see Harry Potter on the GBC on the list, thought I was the only one that knew about it. I think it's highly underrated, though I suppose you can't blame most people as it's easily overlooked when there were Gameboy Advance versions of the Harry Potter games released basically at the same time. This is still one of my favorite rpgs to this day and I'm very glad to have discovered it so many years ago.
I used to play Harry Potter 3 on gba and frankly I wouldn't mind giving this game a go. The gameplay is widely similar (including the combat mechanics) but it won't have what made me love the gba game: an awesome orchestral soundtrack. For real, take a listen and you'll see how well crafted the soundtrack was for a gba game. There is a release of the uncompressed music on TH-cam and it's not too different from what we hear in the game.
Lol I feel the same way. I love the look and feel of 3d Zelda’s, but outside of botw / totk, I haven’t completed any 3d Zelda’s, meanwhile I’ve completed quite a few 2D ones. Links awakening was my GBC favourite
You opened my eyes to the Harry Potter game. I never thought a licensed HP game could be any good, but that one looks like a lot of fun, so I'll buy it. It's cheap right now anyway, so even if I happened to not enjoy it, I wouldn't be losing a lot of money.
I remember that Harry Potter game fondly. One Christmas, my mom got both my brother and I a GBC game (Me-Harry Potter, My Brother- DBZ: Legendary Super Warriors). I was initially upset because I really wanted the Dragon Ball Game (which he ended up dropping and I played it anyway lol) but I really loved the Harry Potter game. It was hard for me to grasp at first but I eventually blasted through it over Christmas break that year.
Crystal is my favorite GBC game. I played the absolute hell out of it with Typhlosion after playing through Gold with Feraligatr and loved all the new features that were put in. Of course, choosing Cyndaquil allowed 7-8 year old me to experience the terror of Whitney and her Miltank.
Dragon Quest III and Dragon Quest Monsters for the GBC were my introduction to the Dragon Quest series nearly ten years ago. Great games. Although, really, if any game series was entitled to rip off pokemon, it would be Dragon Quest, since 5 and 6 both had monster recruitment before Pokemon was created.
davidvinc It's such a shame that 5 and 6 were released in English as late as they were. The impression of Dragon Quest Monsters when it first came out was that it was a Pokemon clone. Nobody knew at the time that DQM featured characters from VI or the monster recruitment system of V. Since the game was seen as a Pokemon clone and not as a genuine Dragon Quest entry, it's easy to see how the game was so overlooked.
Very true, in fact, there are still repercussions from the way Square treated the FF series, (promoting it at every turn) compared to the way Enix treated the DQ series in the 90s (ignoring it completely). To this day DQ is seen as an underdog series and fans have to protest loudly for them to even consider releasing a mainline game, let alone a spin-off series in the west. Whereas everything little thing with Final Fantasy in its title gets released here with no questions asked.
Sam Eash Shin Megami Tensei actually beat both series to the trainer RPG genre. As far as I am aware Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei (1987) on the Famicom is the very first Trainer RPG game ever made. Dragon Quest very clearly took inspiration from the game.
they were my favorite games, but back then they were called Dragon Warrior, so after 3 on GBC, i never really knew there were more games. i only somewhat recently found out that these games i loved so much in my childhood became Dragon Quest in the West and have been binging on like two decades of missed games since then lol
Awesome list, I loved a lotta the games on here. Surprised none of the final fantasy games on the gameboy made the list, but I guess the competition was tough. I actually missed Lufia as a kid and I saw it on the online store for my 3ds and I've been debating getting it or not, it really looks like it's up my alley. After seeing your praise of the game, I might just have to give it a go.
Small correction for Lufia: TLR, about 4 years too late. There are 12 characters to recruit, with a secret 13th if you manage to find all the Dragon -Balls- Eggs 4 times and best it in battle.
Legend of the River King 2 for Gameboy Color is great as well. I am playing with Rumble thanks to the Pow Kiddy V90 with the Pocket Go Firmware Update and I am also playing using the Epilogue GB Operator now that the settings have Rumble feature using the USB Smartcard for Gameboy. I used the Gameboy ROM Analyzer for Windows and changed the cartridge type to 1EH and fixed the header. This enables Rumble that was programmed into the Japanese version and just needs to be opened on the English version. Great game. Don't miss it.
I appreciate you making this list. XD There is a buy 2 get 1 pre-owned game free sale going on now at a place called Vintage Stock in my area. I just wonder how rare / expensive some of these titles are...
Really happy to see the love for the Harry Potter games. I stumbled across them few years ago collecting. Fun rpgs! Did some research into the games and found good info. The development team who made the two gamboy color games also made the GBA Azkaban game. Google NeoGAF Harry Potter gbc rpg's, and read Dreamwriters comments. He was a developer for the games. Theres a couple of easter eggs if enyone is interested? He has really good storys about the games, good read! These games can be picked up pretty cheap too.
Your strangest SNES RPG list proved that even I had a few games I had not played, Wozz being the main one. And all of the other console lists are well put together. I don't know how old you are, but I'm over 40 now, and still marvel at the fact the cell phones we all have can be used to emulate all of these games, be it handheld or home console ones. I remember having my trusty yellow GBC getting me through some tough times. While it is wonderful kids have the accessibility I(or we if you're old enough)didn't have, they missed out on taking your console to a friends house to play, or linking Gameboys to trade and fight. Oh, and remember the old monochrome Gameboy? It was so structurally sound, you could use it as a ice pick and still be playing at the same time.
I know, I was shocked! I remember as a kid playing those god awful Bart Simpson games for the NES. And I vowed, never again will get a licensed game. But this game is the lone exception to the rule.
There's a whole line of Harry Potter JRPGs (made by Activision, of all companies, if I recall correctly) on handhelds. I prefer the main line of action-adventure tie ins, though. If you're into 3D Zelda, Okami, Legacy of Kain, etc. the first four games, at least, are worth a try. Order of the Phoenix is as bad as the movie and the books, though, I haven't touched the Half-Blood Prince, and Deathly Hallows... ugh... turned into bland-ass TPS games.
I dunno if anyone will respond but I have a question regarding Dragon Warrior Monsters. I understand there are multiple games within this sub-group of the Dragon Warrior/Quest series, but I am wondering about the dungeons. Are they randomly generated? Are the items you get also randomly generated and are their locations randomly generated? See, I am a game mapper (my work is on GameFAQs) and I thought about giving this series a go at it with mapping, but upon researching, I couldn't find anything in regards to any randomness within the game itself.
As an 11 year old or so when Magi Nation came out, I was ALL IN on it. Thought it was the coolest card game of all around at the time, thought the full-fledged RPG on the game boy was mindblowing, and had dreams of a big console release for it. I was, of course, wrong.... but what if...
Over half the games on the list are Dragon Warrior/Quest (I can already tell this is one of your favorite franchises from this video alone), but there's 3 entries I easily recognize because I was the odd one out growing up. Opposite of you, I wasn't really big on Dragon Warrior/Quest, but I was a huge Pokémon fan. If it was Pokémon, I had it. But the two that really stand out here? Magi Nation and Oracle of Seasons. Sure, everyone knows about Zelda, but Oracle of Seasons was the best Zelda game on the GBC. Oracle of Ages was too much like Ocarina of Time. OoS was my go to and I loved it. The story was also better than that of OoA, but owning both games made it worth playing, as you could ultimately get a true ending. Magi Nation... Magi Nation? Well, despite the battle system (yes, it's card based. Yes, you have to grind for them damn Hyrens and it gets old fast), it's one of the few hidden gems on the console. It's got a well written story and breaks the trend in that it's an American RPG, not a Japanese RPG. It was also based on the Trading Card Game that was run here for a while. Shame the TCG never caught on and the franchise died out. I also owned Dragon Warrior/Quest I & II. I mean, it's fucking Dragon Warrior. We had it on the NES when I was growing up, but we didn't have the sequel. Getting both games in one bundle though? Hell of a deal. I never played the Lufia, Harry Potter, and Survival Kids games though.

I just got to play Dragon Warrior 3 on the GBC in this past year, and it is my favorite game of all time. Dragon quest 5 is second, and Dragon quest 4 is third, in terms of video game ratings. Mother 3 and Earthbound round out my top 5.
Magi nation was one of my favorite games. The tv show was pretty good too.ps the game was based off a card game and the show was based off the video game
Telefang. Sure, the bootleg wants to pretend it's Pokemon, but don't let that stop you from playing such a wonderful game. The story is dark, yet has plenty of silly moments to break the monotony. My only complaint about the game is that most dungeons tend to be maze like, and one version is harder than the other. There's plenty of monsters and evolution experimentation.
I only like 4 Rpg. All the rest are boring shitty turnbased crap. Pokemon Advanced wars that one game with the tities idk the name but its amazin. and Valkaries 2 on psp
Shantae had better graphics than Magi Nation, it's largely considered the best looking game on the system. Oracle Of Seasons is wonderful but it's not an RPG. Lufia: The Legend returns has 13 characters, not 9.

3 best years 😭and 2004 was the end of good times
Play Pokémon crystal
Don't hate on Pokemon
But the later, post-DS gens are not that good, especially Ultra S&M.
Short lived gbc? What world did this guy live in
Caleb Prenger the real world, it was only out for 3 years until the GBA came out.
I never knew magi nation was a video game
oh you do know about dragon warrior monsters 2
People play rpgs for the story.
People play rpgs for different reasons
Survival kid is a rare...............ish
MagiNation the best looking game? IMO, its one of the ugliest on the list...
Boooh.
I like ages better 🤣

Gbc - 1998
GBA - 2004
Short lived+6 years primary portable console != short lived but average.
Except the GBA was released in 2001....
I dunno, I actually liked gold and silver better.
This seems like a 2008 video
WTF ZELDA A RPG SAGA?!
Not really! Especially when its gameplay is more like Quest for Camelot.
Dq3 ftw!
Nice list.
But Zelda is not an rpg
I'd like to see a game boy colour top ten that wasn't put together by pokemon fans...
I only like 4 Rpg. All the rest are boring shitty turnbased crap.
Pokemon
Advanced wars
that one game with the tities idk the name but its amazin.
and Valkaries 2 on psp
I wouldn’t call Zelda a RPG, but eh
Shantae had better graphics than Magi Nation, it's largely considered the best looking game on the system.
Oracle Of Seasons is wonderful but it's not an RPG.
Lufia: The Legend returns has 13 characters, not 9.
These aren't all rpgs.
except they are
@@r.a.fgattaiguy845 OK. Everything is an rpg. Lol
@@Strictly_Jake he only thing here you could argue isn´t an RPG is the Zelda game
@@r.a.fgattaiguy845 So I was right
@@Strictly_Jake Zelda fans argue about it all the time so no one knows really
Lest's be honest. Pokemon is boring as hell.
No.
@@RokuRG Sword and Shield is. Not to mention that it's gimmicky.
Yeah! and I prefer Digimon, more mature.
WatchAllDavidsVideosChallenge
So all of these games moving to NSO would just make the world a better place |-)
I want to play wild arms 5
