The sigh when you started "What are Zoners" reminded me. If you've never played it, check out "Them's Fightin' Herds." Friendship is Magic + Street Fighter. Specifically, it's tutorial section is a work of god damned /art/, taking you from basics as fundamental as movement all the way to tactics and strategy on par with "jump cancels" and "move buffering". What I was reminded of in particular is when the character of this archetype is introduced, the coach explicitly and only ever refers to them as "Jerks" Unrelated: Is Frieza really a Zoner? *scratches head* He seems like he's had plenty of hands throughout the years. Granted his PERSONALITY is 100% Zoner, sure. "Ew, touch you, you're a smelly ape." But his FIGHITNG style? I dunno.
I have found legendary tech against zoners. Start teabagging until you get carpel tunnel. This will give you the emotional high ground because you are taunting and they are doing nothing about it. Sincerely Saikyo Style Enthusiast

@@unrinxs976 to answer your question "yes, but actually no" They are unique enough to be defined, but they are often paired with or have a trend towards the primary archetypes like Zoner and Rush Down. Like, Rosalina and Luma in Smash. She's definitely a puppet character, but many would also describe her as a Zoner too.

This is one of the most entertaining and informative videos I watched about archetypes! Loved this! Slight criticism though, you may have overextended the charge character joke. I was kind of itching for the next part but the joke felt a bit too long. Overall though, the vid was solid and on-point. Loved the knowledge and humor balance. My personal opinion only is be careful of not making the joke too long. This is still on you though. I’ll give you a sub since I love content like this!
I actually find rushdown by far the more frustrating archetype to play against, for as irritating as the keepaway game of zoners is at least I have time to think while fighting them, I don't really have that with a competant rushdowner. The problem I have with Zoners is how they just infest low level play because they are significantly easier to play than they are to counter, considerably moreso than other archetypes, so a lot of people just resort to spamming projectiles and never actually learning the game beyond that. A lot of zoners are also straight up broken *cough* Deadshot *cough* every zoner in MHA One's Justice *cough* so while I personally find rushdown more frustrating zoners are still annoying AF.
I highly disagree with the part about emotional impact. Fighting against zoners is fun because its one sided yet so back and forth at the same time, you use strategy and game knowledge to either get inside and kick their ass or get zoned and get your ass beat. Playing as a zoner is fun as well, as someone who plays rts games I always have fun placing defensive buildings near my enemy's base, you have the option to use them defensively but you can also get in their face with your defensive zone; likewise, its fun to mess with your opponent by using this zone aggressively to overwhelm them, but you also have the option to use it properly as a defense. Grapplers on the other hand, oh boy. Imagine grabs, but from a mile away and they deal a quarter of hp each one. Like the whole downside of being a heavyweight is being slow, but they have these instantaneous one-hit-kill moves. Obviously they aren't op, but the main problem for me is that heavyweights, grapplers or not, are overpowered in low level play. But that really isn't a big problem, since those issues are overcome by players as they get better at the game. Still, that's a real emotional impact for me, where as zoners arent as good low level vs low level and they aren't the meta from what I know.
I wholly disagree with you. Zoners are difficult at a low level becuase when they start not interacting with you, it counteracts the whole concept of fighting. However, you are playing, as you said, the famous "rushdown zoner" playstyle. This is extremely fun. However, grapplers are difficult because of their command grabs, not because they counter the idea of fighting, but because the opponent has forgotten the up direction on the stick. It's more of a fresh to the FGC player rather than low level.
@@holhorsegaming2121 If we are talking about emotional impact, maybe its just my experience playing with friends but when someone decides to disengage from actual fighting it means they cannot defeat you properly. The emotional impact for me is not demoralising, quite the opposite; you have beaten your opponent so hard they have to rely on cheap tactics, and they are way more likely to be nervous and slip up than you. But if you go against someone who does not engage you from the get go, I can see it being frustrating.
i normally don't play zoning focused characters ( although i frequently gravitate towards shotos so i use my fair share of fireballs) but one of my favorite fighting game characters ever is maybe the most ridiculous zoner ever or one of them at least, mvc3 morrigan , love her to death

As a zoner main (I play venom, beerus and axl) I know what you mean by the frustration. I do it. It's fun seeing how long the enemy will can last. But my favorite part is when they find a way in, not through rage, but through patience and skill. It feels good having a calm headed person find an opening and get me. Sure, I lose my round. But I enjoy fighting someone who can read moments during pressure. Isn't that what fighting games are really about? Enjoying a battle with an equal? I play set up characters more so Its like seeing someone solve my puzzle. I also wrote this long comment to ask, where is my set up characters archetype? Gimmick characters and traps are important too! Satisfying to see the plan come together
Not mentioning Z Broly Zonning was a sin because by ASW sick humor, they made Z Broly which made Frieza UNPLAYABLE. Like, Z broly has BEST ki blast in the game. Has Barrier to neutralize zoning and ARMOR to call out rushdown because REASON!!!

I have a rushdown that can counter zoners, kage from SF5, his projectile has three hits witch means it can go through three projectiles before it disappears, witch means once they start making you mad yo start making them made

I was the archetype that'd figure out the zones tactics and have to counter it. It makes me feel like an anime character. But it gets extremely annoying. Yes, they do intentionally try to frustrate you.
i punched a buddy of mine best friend in the face (not a slap with the fist) when we played marvel vs capcom at home. he spammed only projektiles and acted arrogant...damn i enjoyed make him cry :D
I think perhaps it's the way you're looking at things Why isn't Ryu considered a Zoner? Every shoto has a good "Dragon Punch" anti air uppercut thing and a fireball. But that's a portion of the package, these tools mean they perhaps can have zoner strategies but they are simply outclassed at range by a character with multiple fireballs and/or keep away tools. Guiles jump kick and Sonic boom are just better than Ryus DP and fireball. They have to be to make up for the fact he's a charge character he even has a special that let's him spam endless fireballs. His design encourages turtling where as Ryu is a jack of all trades with good enough tools for most situations (not that Guile can't rush people down in a clutch). It would like calling a character a grappler because they have a single command grab

The key to beating a zoner is to try and get in, most of thier kit is reserved for ramged attacks so in melee they have significantly less options

Balrog is traditionally not a rushdown character. Hes much closer to a turtle really. SFV just made everyone a little rushdown.
