- The love of a 16-month old is only surpassed by the patience of a Newfoundland.
My sixteen-month old daughter, Isabelle, with 170 lbs. Bear (the 2 year-old black Newf) and the 98 lb. Bella (the 8-year old Landseer Newf).
It’s with deep sadness that I share Bear’s (the black Newf) passing today. He was 11 and had to be put down after his hips failed.
Bella passed several years prior from cancer.
The little girl in the video was very sad but we were all so happy and grateful for the joy he brought to us and the 1M+ viewer here. Thank you for your kind words over the years!

Dogs aren't pets. They are family members, loved ones. And when they pass away, it's the same feeling as losing a human loved one. It's heartbreaking
Chris I totally know how you feel. We lost our beloved boy woody 6 weeks ago. We've been in hell since. Our lives are so empty now. I even yesterday spotted a bit of drowl on the ceiling and you've never seen a 6 ft 3 19 stone guy cry so quickly..... These dogs are heaven sent they touch you in such a way it's almost spiritual...
Sadly our boy woody was only 2 yrs old 85 k of fun,love,and total loyality.. we will never get over his loss.. and neither will you.

I love how she makes sure to give the same amount of love pats and hugs to each dog! I think she will be a very compassionate woman. hehe
The BEST dog EVER! I had one for 11 years and he was a big guy but just all love and affection. He died in 2009 and I still miss him terribly. None better!

I love it when she starts rubbing her head on them. So cute. They could totally be raised by wolves they would be quite happy. watching kids do what they do with their dogs is just beautiful.
All pet owners have gone through this awful pain. We can never’’replace” them in our heart ‘tis true but we can bless their memory by finding another to help fill that deep void in our lives. If I had just 10 yrs. left , I would get me a black lab, GSD, Cairn .........or a Newf ! God bless you❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼

I wouldn't fancy the chances of anyone trying to harm that child in front of those two, Newfoundlands are soft as buns until its comes to looking out for the ones they love.

The little girl steps right in the dog's face and sits on its paws, and it's all in a day's work. That's gentleness. This little kid will grow up very well adjusted.
I've worked at a dog shelter for several years, and have seem A LOT of dog breeds but newfoundland dogs are simply without a doubt, the most calm, tolerant and friendly dog.
We just got a Newfoundland puppy and he is by far the gentlest puppy in the whole world. I am in Love. Your one on the right looks like my Shyloh Bear.
There is nothing like a Newf. And to have *_two_* Newfs...happy the man with such loving and patient companions!
These are two great dogs, and a great breed. My in-laws had a Newfie, he was just the best with kids, so tolerant. Everywhere he would go, kids would just mob him - hugging and petting. He loved it - he would just plop down and soak in all of the attention. He was the same way with puppies, they had a Pug puppy who would chew on his ears and jowls and he put up with all of that. As others have said, they are fiercely protective but not aggressive. True gentle giants and very loyal.
I see a lot of people who love this video and want one, but do your research because they aren't for everyone. First, they need a lot of space, not good for small or crowded homes because a dog this big needs a lot of space to lay down, turn around, etc. If you crate train them, just the crate takes up a huge amount of space. You'll also need a big vehicle to transport these giant dogs. Finally, you'll have dog drool everywhere. They drool - a lot. And then they shake their heads and it flies everywhere - walls, ceiling, you name it. If you aren't prepared to follow your dog around with a towel to clean up drool - this isn't the dog for you.
If you can put up with the drool and have the space, these are a great choice for a family with very young kids. Oh, one more thing, take Newfie puppies through obedience training. These guys are so big, they can easily grab food off the counter, table, etc. If you train them properly you can put them in a down-stay and they'll leave you alone while you are eating. If you don't train them, just remember their head is level with your tabletop, so your dinner is at their eye level!
as big as Newfies and related breeds are--you want them calm and friendly--I would not want to deal with a large Newfie (180lb+) with a Dachshund temper

it's been 5 years since my newfie Isaac passed away...i still miss him so much. They are the best dogs u can ever find: smart , gentle , calm but brave. This video gives them justice....they are lovely beings

I had a newfie from when I was born till I was 9, she was the BEST DOG I've ever had. She took some fur-pulling and eye-poking from me, as well as some dress-up. Not even a growl, loved her and still miss her to this day :(
I have a 4 year old Landseer newfie named Maggie. They are protective of more than just children but of their entire family. She always places herself between myself and anyone she does not know and will stand firm until she is at ease. She is on the smaller side, only 100 pounds, but puffs up to look more impressive when need be. I can't say enough great things about this breed. She is also an amazing trail dog. She can keep up with the horses and never lets me get out of sight.

I had a Newfoundland when I was younger. She was alive when my parents had their own daycare. Our only concern was just the dog's sheer size compared to the kids. But she was always extremely careful around them.

They are the best dogs with very young children. Completely trustworthy and tolerant.. hence the nickname.. the nanny dog.
And they have a rescue instinct and love water. Remember the scene from Betthoven when he gets the little girl out of the pool. May be just a movie.. but a newfo8undland would really do that. Strong water-rescue instinct. Very protective of their family without being agressive. They physically place themselves between their family and strangers. they're unsure of.

a dog ,specially at that age is the best gift we can do to a kid and to us as well ,at all means .bit hard if you live in an apartment but ,try it . your daughter is amazing .my best wishes

I loved the video when the baby stood up and sat between the legs of Bella! I also have a Newfie.. He is 6 yr old.. My grandson walks him. So gentle!!
This just goes to show how patient these dogs really are, it's incredible, I really need one. They, like, better than us! I wouldn't want a child sitting on my hands, but they really care for her! It's so sweet, and she's so cute! They all look like the best of friends!

Oh, I'm aware. I grew up with one. She and I were the same age and she had to be put down at age 16. Awesome dog...very loyal and gentle but FIERCELY protective. When I was a young boy no other animal got anywhere near me if she was around.

I was also raised by a Newfie mix when I was little. My JoJo was with me from newborn to 10 yrs of age. He was sixteen when he died. That was the best dog in the world. I still miss him.

ANY loved dog is the 'greatest' to that person. Wish I could get a Newfie, but present circumstances do not allow for the upkeep. They are great dogs .

I have a Bernese... shes 16 months old at the moment and shes very playful and if she hurts you she knows it... shes a gentle giant (unless you get her started with her toys...)

Chill out people. I'm from Newfoundland. Born and raised. I don't care if people call me a newfie. I call myself a newfie. I don't require to be distinguished from the dog either. Plus who would want to? They are best dogs in the world. Friendly, Loyal to the end, selfless etc... More humans could use these traits. These dogs know what love is. Unlike most people.
I have to say the same thing goes with rottweilers. All my life growing up my family has had the breed. They all were very protective of the family and especially the children. They have this sense that they are just kids and thus more vulnerable. One of many times they moved to stand between the children and a complete stranger was when a UPS guy came to the house and we were all out on the front yard. The rottweiler we had moved to stand between the 4 yr old and ups guy, no aggression given.

my borther's newfie, oliver loves playing with our niece hannah. When she was a year old, she LOVED to crawl all over him. She would even sit on his head, and he'd just lay there. once she got off, her face usually got slobbered on. Newfs are great family dogs!
