Chloe the Newfoundland has mastered an impressive range of complex and unusual jobs. She can load the washing machine, transfer items to the tumble dryer and take them out and carefully put them in the basket. She learnt how to help in the kitchen fetching her own food and the potatoes for dinner. She can even turn the vacuum on and off.
Hazel Carter specialises in dog & cat pet behaviour and training and her own dog, Chloe is just a small example of her achievements over the years. Meet one of Britain's most helpful dogs, Chloe the Newfoundland.

This gem of a video is ideal to watch after a hectic and emotionally draining day.
Nothing like the love you receive from your companion. The Newfoundland breed is no exception. Never had one for myself but have met a few. Darlings indeed they are.

My buddy is mixed-breed of German Shepherd and Chow bought from a now closed in-mall pet shop. I didn't realize it at the time but those type places aren't the best for a dog to be held and sold. Anyway, yours is definitely one beautiful dog and I can't say enough about your gentle patience as demonstrated in the video. Thank you again.

Hello Austin, Only just seen your reply, What an unusual dog you have. You are quite right. You have to be very careful when buying a dog. Chloe came from a very caring responsible breeder. She was reared in the house and came from health tested stock with excellent temperament. I had her at eight weeks old.

Many thanks Lesley Anne, glad you enjoyed my book. Chloe is following in Connie's paw prints. The video only shows a few of her talents. She has learnt over fifty different tasks and commands. She is quite versatile, carefully carrying eggs, pulling up weeds or finding my reading glasses. She loves her work as she is rewarded with lots of fuss and tasty treats. She's my best friend, but does slobber a lot.

I have a Newfoundland mix that I rescued a few years ago. I have balance and drop foot disability, and without training, he's helped me so much. When we would go hiking and go down a steep hill, he'll get in front of me and step sideways down so I can lean against him the whole way down the hill. He's so gentle with everyone and adores children. Love my boy :) definitely will be getting another Newfoundland when the time is right.

Hello Seraphina, I wonder where you live? your message was very interesting. He sounds wonderful I also use Chloe to help me up and down hills as I have some medical problems. She knows the command "pull me up" and I can hang on to her, even her tail and she pulls me up. I use her to help me down steep slopes by telling her to sit and stay then I hang on to her lead which is attached. She sits like a rock however hard I pull, till I'm down safely.

      Hello Hazel and Chloe,
I live in Minnesota. Koda (or Cubbie Bear as I like to call him) has been such a wonderful joy to have in the family. We just celebrated our 8 year anniversary with him on Saturday :) I can tell that arthritis is setting in though, so we don't go on long hikes anymore.
That is fantastic what you've been able to teach Chloe! I think Koda picked up on it partly because when I got him, I hadn't had the farm accident yet, so we were able to get a strong bond prior to my accident. My dad is a fall risk, if Koda senses that something isn't right, he'll pull my dad away from the stairs so he won't fall :) Newfoundlands are such a wonderful breed!

That's so amazingly sweet. Zoey is my 3 year old Newfoundland. I suppose she's not the most gentle because I originally was training her to do water rescue before I was injured, so she's used to being a little bit "rough" with people.
I barely had to work with her though, I'm constantly in awe of her intelligence. I open the front door and she runs out to get the mail from the mailman, she pushes doors shut for me, she's just a pleasure to live with. I'm sure you feel the same way about Chloe!

newfies are the very best, just unbelievable dogs, soooo intelligent, affectionate, character to die for, they are seriously the number one dog, but not for the the faint hearted....so they drool, they smell if you let it happen, they need constant grooming, but boy what a joy..they are just wonderful

    • @RRRRRRRRR33
      @RRRRRRRRR33 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Pretty much, an honest point of view. The drool and smell... yes, it's a severe downside for many people. It's good for them to learn about those kind of things. Another famous example is related to huskies. Many people consider them the most beautiful dogs and etc.. but damn, they are stubborn and dumb, lol There's no perfect dog... even the samoyed who doesn't smell, has a nice character and etc.. He has tons of fur, a small percentage of allergic people can't stand them, etc..

Hello James, I do not advise having two dogs at the same time. They will enjoy each others company and have fun chewing furniture and anything else they fancy. Barking could also be a problem. It would be better to start with one and gradually build up the time he is on his own so he is relaxed when left. You need to start immediately for very short periods, while you are on holiday would be ideal .Some kennels accept dogs while you are working. hazel

Thank you. Yes it is worth the effort. Because its so hot here at the moment and she has a very thick coat she is panting and drooling a lot! We have lots of shady trees all round our cottage so after an early morning walk she can relax in the shade.

Thank you so much for sharing this video. I have a 5-month-old Newfoundland, and I'm training her to be a service dog. She is my first Newfie and I adore her! I think she is going to be on the smaller side. So far she is doing great with everything, except she doesn't want to bring back things that she picks up. I have trained mostly retrievers in the past, so perhaps it just takes Newfoundlands a bit longer. I'm sure she will catch on soon! She is very intelligent. This is an amazing breed and I wish more people would consider them for service dogs.

So sorry I have not answered your message before. I gather your young newfoundland does not bring back a dropped article. Try dropping the article right by your feet and encourage her to give it to you in exchange for a treat. Also practise hold and give with her by your side. Good luck,Hazel

Hello Katie, sorry I have been so long replying. I taught Chloe to close a door by getting her to touch the door with her nose, while I held a treat very close to it. as soon as she touched the door she had the treat. She then leant to push the door and was rewarded each time she did it. At the same time I would say "shut the Door"

Yes Newfoundland dogs could be very good with children with disabilities. Their size and strength is useful for supporting, and helping anyone attempting to stand up, or needing a secure handhold. They can untie shoe laces or pull a boat. They would need very careful training for this work with children. They do need a lot of work to keep them clean and sweet smelling .

Hello Elena, I'm glad you enjoyed Chloe's video. She is huge but very gentle. She loves to help indoors and out side. This morning on a walk I dropped my two gloves which she found and gave to me. I hope I can do another video showing more of Chloe's unusual work.
      best wishes Hazel and Chloe

I'm hoping to one day have a service dog, and the main breed I'm looking at is a Newfoundland. This video just confirms my thought that they would be brilliant for this. Hopefully Dog AID will agree!

Many thanks Allen, glad you found my book interesting and helpful. Hopefully there will be more videos of Chloe. There is a video and write up by Sussex Express March 2012. She has also been on TV. There is more info about Chloe and Connie, heroine of A Dog in a Million on my web site. Any dog could be trained like Chloe given time and encouragement. She often does 20 or more useful things a day. Good luck with your puppy.

Hello Dariusz, I wonder where you live? Thank you for your kind comments. They do need a lot of grooming, when moulting they need grooming every day. their coats do collect all the mud, grass, brambles etc. Chloe is bathed every few weeks especially round the back end if it gets smelly.
