People who havent owned or grown up with newfies probably dont understand how special this is.
Mine had no training whatsoever.. he loves kids... he protects them.
Kids come up to the porch to sit with him.
Once one of the dads to the kid came to get kid home for dinner.
He took 1 step beyond the mailbox, and my newf sprung up in action.. holding him at bay barking.
He stood between the "stranger" adult man and the kids.
He didnt know it was his dad and ok ...
But that reaction, to a untrained dog, is something i will never forget.
It ended well ofcourse. I got out to check on the situation and told dog it was ok. So he could pass.
While this went on the kids had a good laugh.
Dad commented when he left "so i guess that answers the question if my kid is safe here..."
Frosty So true. I have a 7 yr old Landseer. She stays close to my nieces when they are swimming in our pool. My mom suffers from seizures and she stays by her side when she visits. She never had formal training. They are amazing dogs.
This sounds like an amazing story and the father was absolutely right! It was an incredible thing to see for an untrained dog! I remember an aunt of mine had a Rotweiler female dog. She was always playful and "silly" with us around but my aunt told me a story in which some cleaner guys came for the carpets (you know every end of winter they get the carpets cleaned up). The dog watched them get in and there was no problem but when she saw the unknown guys come out with the carpets on their shoulders she freaking rushed at them and bit one of them in the leg. She assumed there was a robbery at the house! Of course everything went well there too, I think it was mostly the jeans that she damaged but to think that she simply watched when the guys got in but snapped when she saw them come out with house stuff was pretty amazing!

My Newfie is 4 years and he never gets angry on people he have seen ......but when my 14 year old brother get into fight he stand. By his side.....if I was not there other kid could get hurt........I swear I love him sooo much.....from morning walk with me to sleeping on my bed.......I can t imagine my life without him.....☺️☺️
These dogs are definitely worth it. They're just so darn calm (overall) and affectionate. But they're big. When I sit on my couch and he's in front of me, I can't watch TV. Then again, most of what's on TV is brain-rot, so I'll just pet my dog.

@@bunnybear126 I guess that's true. My comment was more about the state of television but my newfie Precious hasn't been a problem at all. The size-thing was an adjustment, but we're over that now.
@Austin King It's funny you mention that. Yesterday, I took Precious for a walk. When I got back, boring, repetitive, trash TV was all that was on my puny, little HD antenna. He stood in the way AGAIN! So, I just HAD to pet him. Screw TV.
Ours thought he was a lap dog and would just sit on my husband lap.
umbrella0326 That made laugh re television. If mine is being in lap top mode (which is frequent) and there is something I actually want to watch, I have to switch to audio setting on television and just listen!
Mine just passed away at just 8 years old from lung cancer. I couldn’t have asked for a better dog

You can't fault these gentle giants, perfect with other dogs and good at training new puppies, good with cats and any pet, just overall amazing fluffballs.
And great protectors.
Growing up around these dogs, for me, honestly made me feel great. They were my grandparent's, big, fluffy, slobbery beasts. One, the older, now deceased, was a showdog when she was at her peak. They protected me from anyone they didn't recognize, if I walked them, despite them being twice my weight, they would be gentle. Honestly they are just the sweetest dogs ever. I am scared of dogs from a experience from around the same time, but those dogs helped me, being the gentle giants they are

I would usually say some of these parents are irresponsible...but Newfies are probably the only breed where you know there is next to no chance of the babies getting hurt...pretty much 0% on purpose. Newfies are so aware of babies and kids. They just are drawn to them.
However...you should never let a child climb on any dog, but for the dog's sake, here. Newfies don't have the best in bone and joint health.
Labs and Goldens also do very well with kids

You're absolutely right, its very very bad for their bones too.But Newfoundlanders having a VERY BEAUTIFUL CHARACTER .GENTLE SWEET AND PROTECTING, ower Newfie JOSCHKA died .He was 12 jears and 8 months. We will never forget ower dogs .NEVER 🐾🐞🐾

Used to have two newfoundland's growing up. Most friendly and tolerant dogs next to Pit Bulls that I've owned. Only drawback is the shedding. The times I would groom them each week would fill enough bags full of hair to probably make a sweater out of!
Fun fact: there is a service that makes wool out of your pets hair. You can just send fur and get wool back. It's also not cruel, unlike the wool process with sheeps being bred for that one purpose only.

@@lvsoad22 as long as the pit bull is not abused or bred for violence they are among the sweetest dogs that I've ever been around. I used to walk a pit bull daily when I was a teenager and it was the sweetest dog I was ever around. When we finished our walks it would just sit with me and give me kisses. it was great. I find for the most part whenever there's a dog with aggression issues it's usually the human's fault that raised it. I think the only major exception is chihuahuas, I've never met a chihuahua that wasn't aggressive.

This so true of a Newfoundland. Both of mine were like that to my niece and nephew when they were babies. My niece to this day will cuddle up with her blanket and use them as a pillow.

i just love newfies i feel so safe and calm with them. mine cares so much about as and sleeps by my side when i feel sick or cry. she always want to see kids and play i just love newfies so much (maddie also doesn't know her size and try to play with cat and thinks its a little kid)
Their size could be intimidating to some but Newfs are likely the friendliest breed out there! Just giant loads of fur, drool, and love for everybody.
They are known to be very loyal to and protective of the families that adopt them, including their owner(s) children. In Peter Pan, the Darling’s family dog was a Newfoundland named Nanny, who watched over the children. A Newfoundland will let little kiddos chase them around, crawl all over them, and ride them like a horsey to play. They truly are dedicated babysitters.
Awe I want one! They’re so gorgeous with children. And so cute too. They’ve got the sweetest nature even though they’re huge dogs if I had the cash to feed it I’d have one in an instant.x

I remember when I was growing up we had two Newfies. They are so gentle I remember my younger brothers when they were babies and how the Newfies would just lay there while a baby pokes it’s tongue. It’s such a shame that but dogs tend to die younger then small dogs. I don’t remember the age they past but it would have been around 10 maybe 11. I just remember one day she didn’t wake up.

Thegametgirl123 Thegamet I bet they are. I was thinking of getting one to help me with my wheelchair. I can walk enough to be able to get my wheelchair out of our vehicle but to push it myself, no way. It would do really nasty things to my joints. I’ve heard of Newfoundland Dogs being used as service dogs to help pull the chair but I’ve never seen one do it. I refuse to go to a power chair. Have you seen any Newfoundlands being used as service dogs. I also want one because they’re amazing and are my home province’s dog (along with the Labrador).

My godson has eight children, mostly multiple. He also has Newfoundlands. He says he never had to teach a child to walk yet they usually just crawl over to the dog and pull themselves right up the side of the dog

I feel so bad for the first Newfoundland my family owned, I was a little kid like the kids in these videos and I pestered him all the time, but he was always very gentle with me and never got annoyed and snapped at me.
