Just wanna say that I love the videos you put together. A really nice balance of digestible but technical. As a returning player, I don't know the meta enough to quickly understand good vs bad weapon- target pairing. Any chance we could get a video that focuses on that point in more detail? Basically "what are the rough breakpoints that make a target good or bad to shoot?" Not sure if that's feasible tho so no sweat.
So five gaunts are in cover and obscured, but two are not in cover and can be targeted. The attacker targets the unit and kills the two out of cover anf the rest of the shots go into the ones they can no longer see but they now gain the benefit of cover. You are dropping gold here mate!

Question ive run into; Does blast apply when a weapon goes to make an attack or when targets are chosen? I.e. a Leman Russ with demolisher cannon and heavy bolters allocates all of its attacks at a unit of skitari with 12 models left. The attacking player chooses to roll their HBs first and kill 3 skitari. When he then goes to roll the demolisher attacks does he get max shots (blast applying as if there were 12 models when weapons were allocated) or would it get min 3 shots (blast applying as if there were 9 models when attacks were rolled)?
Thank you for the Video. A good tip and also a mistake depending on how you look at it is when people think their characters are safe because of Look out sir! rule. Done this many times vs spacemarines to kill their strong characters. If they place their character next to a 5man squad. Since a unit needs 3 or more models to give Look out sir rule. Its accualy not that hard to just shoot and kill 3 or more of that unit, and then shoot and kill the character. Did this last night :)
Good video! Thanks, but I have a question. If I have a squad of 30 ork boys that take 5 wounds in the shooting phase, I have to take morale test and fail, and have to take a attrition test, where I lose more models. My question is, do I take a Morale test when any unit loses a model, or do I take it after losing half the unit
Nope, morale is its own phase at the end of the round. Once it's happened its over. You have to take a morale test if you've lost any models, but many people don't bother rolling when it's impossible to fail. So your ork boys would have to roll, fail, and then take an attrition test. The attrition test fails on a 1 or a 2 if you're under half strength
One of the biggest mistakes I see with new players is shooting the right gun at the wrong target. For example a unit of 12 troops next to a tank and they fire their Las cannon at the troops.
Absolutely love the videos, I'd wager if you could make videos on each army you your channel would blow right up. Just off basics alone your content is well thought out and and definitely easier to digest than most (noob here).
I've got a few ideas -- i'm just worried I don't really know enough about most of the factions. For example, I could make a video on Thousand Sons but not orks or tau etc
One thing that gets me would be if the model or unit has regular style attacks and blast shooting at a unit would you still use the size the unit was at when you started rolling or the reduced amount. Like if a leman russ shoots its hvy bolter and kills a few before the bc shoots?
So one thing I kind wish you covered is the confusing cover no cover choice when pulling models. AFAIK you effectively choose one model and make the save based on its current relationship to the shooter. My friend and I pull from behind cover to maximize the armor save but in light of your videos this sounds like a bad idea long term. Thoughts?
You can, I didn't have any of those models in the terrain so they didn't get cover only dense terrain would give a -1 to hit. Just being near a ruin doesn't give cover. It sounds like you did all the rules correctly. I'm planning on making a terrain video next week.
12:08 you decide after they rolled... but you still have saves to make so you never realy know how many will die when deciding on what model to take the save
@@danielbrewster8642 i would also argue that its not RAI, since fast rolling should not effect the game and or decisions.... i usually tell in which order models will take the save before rolling ("This 3 first after that from the back of the unit")
Yeah I'm sorry, I put a huge gain on this video beforehand. TH-cam normalizes the sound once it's been uploaded and I can't for the life of me find out why all my videos have super low volume after I upload them! Maybe getting new software will help since it's impossible to adjust volume after uploading to TH-cam
Great overall list and good things to keep in mind. Small point of criticism, though. You flubbed a couple of points of terminology in your summaries. There were several times where you said model where you should have said unit and similar mistakes. Easy things for those of use who know the rules to correct in our heads, but would lead people who don't already know these things to the wrong conclusions. Overall point is just you should be a little more careful and double-check your terminology in the future. Great point 6, however, I also want to point out the corollary to forcing your opponent to choose only sub-optimal uses of stratagems. Since we know that's our goal when we are picking targeting orders, assume your opponent is also going to do the same. The simplest counter to this then, is to call their bluff. If we know they really want to clear that closer unit, (which will be the obvious assumption) just use transhuman on that first set of shots, thereby maybe saving an extra model and then the opponent now has to choose to shoot the target they didn't want to shoot, or continue with a bad trade for their shots. Wargames are much more like Poker than they are like Chess. It's about getting in your opponent's head and knowing what they are trying to accomplish, not just trying to optimize every event. In short, the concept works in the opposite position as well, and don't let yourself fall into the trap of "too good to use" syndrome.
Thanks for the comment! and yes good point about the stratagem use. Reminds me of hoarding health potions in DnD :) Sadly im not very good at speaking and I spend about 2 hours recording to get 15 minutes of usable footage. I'm hopeful that I'll improve in precise language over time and through practice
Hey Daniel, How is the shooting resolved, if for example. I have a unit with 2 models, but the models have different weapons each with a different damage characteristic? Example: Shooting at a unit 2 models each with W3 Model one -> D1 Model two -> D3 Both hit and wound, and the target fails their save. Since all attacks happen at the same time. Can the target choose, oh I take the D1 and then the D3 and my second model is unharmed or ?
I am not a player, but that first mistake sounds stupid. I know it is the rulles but if half of the unit is hidden, for me they are saved from shooting.
@mandellorian dont have enough memory space in my head for more than 1 edition at the time, and as long as ppl dont bring meta stuff like a nightbringer, skitarii blobs or deathwing spam, i can have a decent chance
For point 1 - it specifies firing *model*. Does that mean if it's a unit say Space Marines shooting my unit of Guardsmen, should I tell my opponent to shoot with one model at a time until I've removed all guardsmen that were in LOS?
Sorry if I said model, that example was just a single model unit. You select and ENTIRE unit and resolve all their attacks at once. The shooting phase breakout of the core rulebook specifies this. So no, as long as the space marines are each in range and LOS to start, they unload all their bullets into your guard unit
Question, I was recently told by an opponent that if I'm shooting at a unit with mine, I can only kill the models in his unit that I have Los on regardless of the amount of wounds I deal. Is this correct?
Hey, I'm really happy to see that your channel has grown so much since the beginning days of D&D videos when I first saw you. I subscribed because of the first video - about military planning in D&D. I do not, however, play Warhammer in any way shape or form, so the direction the channel has took lately has fallen out of my interest. But the bottom line is this - I'm unsubscribing not out of spite or anger at all. I'm truly very happy you seem to have found your direction and are getting many more views these days. @@danielbrewster8642 I feel like there is a deeper lesson to your videos that reaches farther than just 40k. My take away from your 'mistakes' videos is less about the specific rules of 40k and more about understanding how probability, strategy and tactics can (and more importantly, should) affect your decision making. I feel like 40k is just the medium you are using to teach gamers how to think strategically and tactically and you could essentially have the exact same conversation applied to just about any tactical/strategic game. Great job! This kind of content is great for the table top hobby as a whole. All of that being said, This news of a DND channel intrigues me. Mayhaps its time for a return to D&D's roots? Maybe we need a channel looking at Battlesystems or Chainmail? I feel like D&D has lost something epic and grand since 3rd addition. Fewer heroes raising grand armies to fight against hordes of evil and all that jazz.
@Brennon Brunet You're totally right, and also the first person to notice that! There's a reason my channel is my name and not some brand like "Wh40k tactical coolness with weird drawings" -- its because at the end of the day, the channel is about growing with others in a community and changing how we see obstacles in life. Its a self help channel with heavy wh40k flavoring :) If you're looking for a DnD channel, I recommend Mathew Colville. His videos are the reason I initially created this TH-cam channel

I always hate the attitude of “this unit always does enough damage to get its points back.” It’s a red herring. A unit can win you the game without firing a shot. The whole question about incorrect targetting uses points to determine which is the better target. That’s nonsense. If that bladeguard unit is holding an objective it doesn’t matter in the slightest how many more points you could get targetting another unit. Points don’t matter and shouldn’t be used to prioritise targets.
Thanks for the comment Iain, I don't think I explained the point well enough. As stated several times in that segment, there are many variables that would affect your target priority and that efficiency is usually NOT the best metric. However, certain stat break points make specific targeting far more lucrative. The points where meant to demonstrate how different weapons kill different units more or less efficiently. This can be very important in creating lists to ensure you can efficiently (as in turns wise as well) remove specific models from your opponents army. Sorry that segment didn't seem useful for you
I think it would have been better to talk in terms of wounds caused. Players are too focussed on points, it’s a trap that too many people fall into. The idea that a 150 point unit is only useful if it does 150 points of damage is a mindset that doesn’t win you battles. Your point was a good one. It was actually very useful. My objection was in terms of using points as a metric to illustrate that.

As a new player something else I tend to struggle with are the rules for deep striking/ overwatch or holding units in reserve ( or is that just an AOS thing?). As my main army has (through the severe lack of the ability to constantly get the sisters models I need/want) has become the Night Lords deep strike is a huge part of their army tactics and I would love to learn more from a source like yourself that explains things in easy to grasp turns with diagrams that help immensely!
Thank you! I will look into that idea about deep strike and reserve !

I'll look into it, friend! Keep passing ideas my way
Weapon target pairing seems so simple but it's a bit complex. Same with knowing the breakpoints

So five gaunts are in cover and obscured, but two are not in cover and can be targeted. The attacker targets the unit and kills the two out of cover anf the rest of the shots go into the ones they can no longer see but they now gain the benefit of cover.
You are dropping gold here mate!
Yep that is true! glad you like my videos
@@danielbrewster8642 Really enjoying your videos mate.
On the situation above... as the defender could I pick the units in cover first... so my opponent has to clear out the gaunts that have the benefit of cover before clearing the ones out in the open?
Yep. Defender picks who takes the wounds and thus could use the guys with +1 sv first.

Question ive run into;
Does blast apply when a weapon goes to make an attack or when targets are chosen? I.e. a Leman Russ with demolisher cannon and heavy bolters allocates all of its attacks at a unit of skitari with 12 models left.
Yeah order does matter. Blast happens when attacks are resolved. So shoot it first!
Nice. Yeah people play pretty fast and loose with their characters!
Yup, not the best use of a Las cannon!
@@danielbrewster8642 very common with AOS players moving over since AOS features spillover damage
@@danielbrewster8642 I'd say it's a start and then you could bring in friends to help formulate on other factions if needed
One thing that gets me would be if the model or unit has regular style attacks and blast shooting at a unit would you still use the size the unit was at when you started rolling or the reduced amount. Like if a leman russ shoots its hvy bolter and kills a few before the bc shoots?
Do the blast weapon first.
Btw great video, I learnt something new, but the audio is slightly on the soft side, maybe you can look into it. Keep up the great videos !👍
Yes I've heard that before! I'm having difficulty fixing that but I'll keep trying. TH-cam automatically normalizes your volume when you upload stuff
12:08 you decide after they rolled... but you still have saves to make so you never realy know how many will die when deciding on what model to take the save
True, most people fast roll those saves. But you're right that it's not totally raw
@@danielbrewster8642 i would also argue that its not RAI, since fast rolling should not effect the game and or decisions.... i usually tell in which order models will take the save before rolling ("This 3 first after that from the back of the unit")
@@ColeNOXyd2nd Yes, you're totally right. I've just never seen anyone play it like that in a tournament -- very good point though
Love your videos and many thanks!
Pls make the volume louder next time, it’s a bit hard to hear ... 🙏🙏🙏
Great graphics btw.

Reminds me of hoarding health potions in DnD :)
Sadly im not very good at speaking and I spend about 2 hours recording to get 15 minutes of usable footage. I'm hopeful that I'll improve in precise language over time and through practice
The video was on the quiet side (had to really crank up the speakers), but great tips!

Hey Daniel,
How is the shooting resolved, if for example.
I have a unit with 2 models, but the models have different weapons each with a different damage characteristic?
Example:
Shooting at a unit 2 models each with W3
Model one -> D1
Model two -> D3
Both hit and wound, and the target fails their save.
Since all attacks happen at the same time.
Can the target choose, oh I take the D1 and then the D3 and my second model is unharmed or ?
Shooting is declared simultaneously but attacks etc are sequential. You would have decided the order as the attacker beforehand
@@danielbrewster8642 Thanks for the clarification!
I am not a player, but that first mistake sounds stupid. I know it is the rulles but if half of the unit is hidden, for me they are saved from shooting.
Mistake 1: choosing tau as your army
(I actually have around 1k of tau, lol)
Just roll more 6s, it's easy
@mandellorian dont have enough memory space in my head for more than 1 edition at the time, and as long as ppl dont bring meta stuff like a nightbringer, skitarii blobs or deathwing spam, i can have a decent chance
Ty john, got some Metriod vibes there
I'll let him know !
Is this correct?
no
Hey, I'm really happy to see that your channel has grown so much since the beginning days of D&D videos when I first saw you.
I just try to keep my feed lean. So once in a while I trim things I don't watch anymore.
Good luck with the channel!
No problem. I appreciate your support. I didn't think i was able to be successful or really happy with dnd content. No offense taken, and I totally understand. It's tough when content creators switch their focus. Maybe one day I'll make a separate channel for dnd. I have several ppts and scripts built that I never used because I ran out of motivation.
Thanks for the views along the way,

Its a self help channel with heavy wh40k flavoring :)

Are blue 1 and 2 different squads in some cases
Yeah they are two separate units. Imagine it being like a redemptor or something. Two different models and two different units
I had an opponent try to tell me the casualties took them out of LOS I told them that wasnt how it works and showed them the rule and they just kept quoting "even if" as if it proved their point
This might be an obvious question, but can models in shooting be out of range if part of their unit is in range?
No. Only models in range can shoot. Sometimes that means only half your unit can shoot
@@danielbrewster8642 Thanks for the clarification! I have always questioned that one when it comes up.

Thanks for the advice. I think you'll find my audio is improved greatly in my more recent videos. I spent a significant amount of money on a new mic and editing software. Please let me know if it's not enough
@@fallofcamelot yep! I've certainly tabled someone only to realize I lost by 20 points :)
