    I'm so glad that you listed actual budget yarn on this video. I did an internet search for some recommendations and was getting frustrated b/c despite many original posters saying how they were on a very tight budget, people kept recommending yarn that was like 15 dollars for 130 yards. Who on a budget can afford a 135.00 sweater? Thank you for being frank with your recommendations and not shying away from synthetics and store alternatives. I went ahead and ordered the Wool Ease based on your suggestion and also wanted to echo your recommendation of Paton's Kroy sock yarn. I have a pair of socks I knitted from this yarn five years ago that are still going strong after many, many washes. Super warm.

      Oh yay! I am so glad! Yeah spending 135 on yarn for a sweater is not in my budget. Every now and then I'll treat myself but it is way too much to do all my projects from indie yarns. Wool ease is probably one of my favorites. I have another 2 sweaters planned with it!

    For people who want cheap yarn I can recommend to go to local thrift stores and check out yarn. Mostly it’s acrylic but few times I found 100% merino wool. Also, check thru sweater section
    -I got few sweaters in 100% wool, which I unraveled and got beautiful yarn. It’s still better deal than buying acrylic skein for 3$, when you can get sweater for this price. Just little tip on budget (but good quality) yarn. Love ur channel❤️❤️❤️

      Thanks, I'm glad you like my content! :) I actually have a video about thrifting yarn! I have a 100% alpaca cardigan that I knit from thrifted yarn for just 20.00! Crazy! I always check the thrift stores.

    I really like lion brand Heartland. I have a wool sensitivity . I use Bernat baby cotton (blend) for myself too.

    This is just the video I was looking for. I'm interested in learning to knit just to make cardigans and sweaters. The general prices of knitting yarn shocked me. Plus, I use a weaker currency. I almost gave up the idea and was gonna stick to crochet because I thought you *needed* the indie yarn for a high quality finish.
    But your sweaters are so pretty and look just as fancy as the really expensive ones I've seen from other knitters. I didn't think budget yarns could turn out so well. Thank you for making this ☺

      Oh I am so glad you were able to find some yarns that will fit your budget. You 100% can make beautiful knits from budget yarns! Most of your big box store sweaters are made from budget materials and they look great, so why not make handmade ones from affordable yarn? I hope you are able to make lots of things now!

    I've seen people use Patons yarn for sweaters and other wearable not just socks. You can also use double and it's still cheaper than hand dye.
    I am enjoying your channel!

      Yeah, sock yarn can be used for so much more! I've made a sweater from sock yarn before. Thank you so much : D

    Hi! Maybe you are already seeing that Hobbii have mystery bags... you choose between acrylic, coton or wool and they send you around 8 to 10 skeins of acrylic for 15$ and they put minimum 2 skein (my experience, lol) of each color so you can do a small project. the coton is 20 skein for 28$ ... I adore this company. I ordered 100% merino fingering weight yarn (400 meters) for 8$ (regular price is around 24$. And there is the rise yarn (coton acrylic blend) at herschner's . I ordered the collection x 3 (to have enough yarn for big projects) and the colors are awesome and I had 6 colors to make big projects (3 balls are enough for a cardigan size 3x) Thank you for this post I was beginning to feel cheap around other knitters lol

      I have seen that! A really cool idea. I am so picky with my colors though. I am a mainly neutral person with a few colors that fit into that neutral category. lol So if I am going to spend money on yarn I want it to be exactly what I want. I will have to look into the Herschner's though, I haven't heard of that one!

    I love wool-ease because of all the colors, it feels sturdy, and I love working with wool when I can afford to. It's usually my go-to when it comes to gift knitting and sweaters. Though if I'm feeling a little fancy I'll get berroco vintage DK. Another affordable option is Lion Brand Fishermen's wool - you get 465 yards of beautiful 100% wool for like 10-12 dollars. Right now it's on sale for 10.

    This was very enlightening thank you so much because I am intimidated by that expensive yarn and I would love to use other Yarn’s that are a little less expensive to make things

      Glad it was helpful! I have plans for more videos like this in the future! I love fancy yarn, but reality is I and others cannot always spend top dollar on fibers.

    New sub. Thanks for the tips. Been itching to find a hobby bc I’m 32 and have no hobbies or anything I’m even decent at 🙈 so I’ve decided to try crocheting.
    Literally within the first 5 seconds of the video when you raspberried, I hit subscribe lol. Gonna go check out more of your videos, just thought I’d say hi.
    PS. Thanks for spelling our name correctly. 😜

    I feel like there are lots of yarn snobs that are overly harsh on stuff like lion brand and patons.
    My grandma used supersaver til the day she died and she put love into everything she made, and that matters more than how much your yarn costs.

    • @denimandrain
      @denimandrain  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I 100% agree! I have knit things out of acrylic yarns that mean more to me than some of my fancy wool sweaters because of who they were for and the love I put into them. 🤗

    Thank you so much this was very enlightening and yes $130 for a sweater is certainly not in my Social Security budget. What I want to know is how do we switch or calculate the more inexpensive yarns to a pattern that has very expensive yards that’s my dilemma I wanna make a sweater made by one of the other gals on the TH-cam and I don’t know how to transfer her choice of yarn to something less expensive that’s what I wanna know.

    • @denimandrain
      @denimandrain  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that's out of my budget to with 3 kids and groceries and gas at an all time high. lol That can be difficult to figure out sometimes. First make sure it is the same weight of yarn, then swatch. If you get gauge you should use around the same yardage as the pattern calls for. Your swatch will also help you determine if you like the fabric it creates. Pattern designers when they calculate yardage have a built in cushion so you don't run out of yarn when making their project. Hopefully that helps you a little!

    LION BRAND makes so many pretty yarns! But I have a question: since there's a lot of acrylic inside (such as Wool Ease shown on this video), is that possible to find a lot of tiny balls on the finished projects after washing them?

    • @denimandrain
      @denimandrain  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Are you talking about pilling (tiny balls)? Yeah, it does pill, but no more than my 100% wool sweaters do. It seems to pill less and less with each shave and wash.
