      We replaced the LoveJoy with a solid steel coupling from Boston Gear. This was the route we intended to go when we first rebuilt our reel, but finances were tight at the time and we settled for the LoveJoy. All is good now!

    I spent many years working with Lovejoy couplings, I dont ever remember seeing one break. Then again, those I worked with were never subjected to loads like that. Replaced a good many rubber inserts tho. You guys handled it well. I expect the solid steel ones you have ordered will better suit your needs. Good luck!!

      Seen a few break over the years of that type and they do make higher torque or load type ones. I think standard is L and C & H are higher torque an strength rated? Then there's grid type and other types made it gets to be cost and down time then what is cheaper & easier when broke to replace and repair. Break downs make for long days and parts runs suck in any business.

    Hand line fishing on the high seas. Woo-hoo. "Haul-i-butt" fishing. The "sintering" powder metallurgy with the very best quality control is not "casting". Sintering can achieve precision but never the strength of casting. I would look into a "shear pin" coupling calculated by torque requirements. Yes you might shear several during the season but parts cost and down time will be minimal. If you do a "no fail" machined steel coupling you stand a chance of failure on the motor and drum shafts. That'd be really bad. Best to all of you. Thanks for sharing.

    Seems strange they work good for 6 years then 2 in one day. Best advice my dad ever gave me was, just because you buy a part new, doesn't mean it's good or not defective. One time I fought with a water pump on my truck , only to discover it had a defect. I exchanged it for another new one and didn't have any problems 🙄🤷‍♂️

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was odd, but we really think it was a result of the conditions and line. The 4 strand kelon is incredibly strong compared to manline and the combination that and no wind put us directly over the gear. One little swell was all it took to pop those lovejoys. Since then we have replaced them with steel couplings and no more issues.

    G'Day,,,Hmmm,,broken coupling,,will do it every time,,this is just a sugestion,,even if you fit the solid coupling,,Install a small relief valve on forward side hose or manifold of motor drive,,this is only to save gear failure,,But you can wind up relief or wind it down reduce presure will save gear,,,
    So inlet line to motor,relief valve teed in and a small check valve back to return line form dump side of relief,,
    Check valve only to stop reverse flow,,shouldn't matter when drum is in reverse,,unless tank line pressure blow relief,,then ya got problems,,
    Hope this helps,,save gear and make line work safer,,not enough horse power to break line,,or coupling..
    Edit ,, had a thought,,don't know whether available but in line pressure reducing valve,,again manually operated and set,,this valve is normally open and shuts when pressure get to high..Not sure on back flow,,usually come with a bypass check to allow back flow,,
    SO EITHER WAY NEED A CHECK VALVE,,
    Thank you for your Films,,very good ,,

    To resolve the lovejoy problem, would it be possible to rig up a tensioner pully not unlike what is used to keep tension on a serpentine belt in a vehicle? Let is take the bouncing stress. Using a stronger lovejoy is only going to move the weak point from it to somewhere else tougher and/or more expensive to fix.

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The previous configuration was a splined shaft that went directly into the gearbox, no slippage there. In this case, the pressure relief valve would have kicked in before any gearing gives way, but more likely the ground line would part off whatever its caught up on.

  • @peppermorris9100
    @peppermorris9100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did your hydrolic psi accidently get turned up ? Before you have a solid Lovejoy made , you need to figure what is the cheapest part to repair or replace , an old man once told me that if I strengthen up one piece or area , I just weakened another . Decide what is the cheapest part to R & R . Love your vidieos, thank you .

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Normally that line would part first. This was really tough line that was on the reel from along time ago. It has been removed now. I do need to double check my pressure relief on the hydraulic valve, as usually it would be screaming at me by then. I wonder if it can get stuck? The shafts are 1.5" stainless steel. No way those will fail before the line.

  • @garyammerman2153
    @garyammerman2153 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There's a chance Len that Lovejoy might replace your broken parts if you sent in failed pieces. As a mechanical engineer, If I worked for Lovejoy, I would do a fracture analysis to see if something was wrong with the powder metallurgy formulation or the sintering process on the batch of parts your couplings came from. Wouldn't hurt to send them an email explaining your odd two coupling failure experience in one trip..... you might get lucky!
    I would consider buying their SS couplings, might be cheaper than parts made by your local machine shop .
    Do you line braid or splice your broken long lines or just set aside for junk rope usage? I always line braided my (Dungeness) crab pot lines as time permitted and saved a lot of bucks when good life remained.

    I'm sure this is a stupid question but can't you rap the line around the block several times like a capstan, keeping tension on it should allow enough friction to use the block right? Not trying to be a know it all, just curious.

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a good question, Marc. It wouldn’t work because there is a peeler which prevents the line from getting stuck in the block. If we were to remove it, it would wind line on the block but only until it got full, there would be no way to slip loops off since the sides taper inwards. Thanks for the comment.

      What kind of monster are you?? Lol, kidding. Nah, it wouldn’t be worth the effort and most wouldn’t stay on the hooks very long. Maybe for crab or shrimp.

    Why do some people say Alaskan halibut is really turbut and a second or third rate eating fish?

    Everytime I have a suggestion I end up feeling foolish. I went for years working in the oil industry here in Western Canada. It was one of my jobs to help mechanics when they showed up. One mechanic showed up with a tool and method I was skeptical about but turned into a learning experience. Have you got the tool of course I cannot remember the name, that allows you to measure the centre of the shaft so when you put on your coupler, you can see if it is centred? If not your coupler could come apart in five minutes or five years. The mechanic showed me how far from true ours was which is why we lost it every three months. Now I'm not trying to insult you, I have used Lovejoy couplers a lot and wondered why something named LoveJoy was being beaten by a hairy maniac at 0200 hrs!!

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lovejoy coupling are designed to allow for a fair amount of shaft misalingment. As the bore and the shaft are machined runout was not really the issue. The real problem and culprit for the failure was shock loading. Lovejoys are made of sintered metal. Essentially a powdered metal pressed under heat and extreme pressure to creat a solid part. While it is quite robust, it is more suited for static loads. When we first rebuilt this reel we wanted a machined steel coupling, but a $350 or so per half it wasn't in the budget. We picked up a few off Ebay to replace the Lovejoy for around $100 each.

      @@EISAlaska yeah the Lovejoy soot! I always hated them. Now that you say this I am reminded that we went to a similar coupler. Our pumps moved cold heavy crude and often when it was -30 it took the pump a minute to get to any type of RPM so you can see the problem. Man that was so long ago. I went into the control room after that and my ten computer screens and I, moved oil and gas products around Western Canada and down through Montana. I was good because I had worked in the field for 22 years, so I knew what happened when I started a pump or opened a valve. Things have changed a lot for me. Thank you for answering my foolish question

    sure wish you guys would speak up or get a better mic, all I hear is mumbling, finding myself eavesdropping. id like to go along on the trip so you need to talk loud enough and make your sentences complete, kind of like speech class in school??

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry Deb. We will try to speak up, although then it sounds like we are shouting at everyone, lol. We are still trying to figure out what works well and won't get destroyed easily in these conditions.
      We do have a good external, directional mic but one can't always face the camera to talk. We try to adjust the volume when editing, but it also adds a lot of popping and hissing so a balance must be found. Appreciate the feedback though.

      This is a commercial fishing boat work environment, not a Disney cruise. Diesel engines are loud so different mics could potentially make it better or worse. Im actually surprised we don’t hear the engine *more.* 😀
