Your videos have been so helpful bro. A couple of months ago I was at a target store and I saw that they had one on sale for 3 bucks. It caught my eye. So I asked the guy that worked there why was it on sale and he said because it was beat up, it was dying and now one wanted it and I thought to my self "me too plant, me too". I don't know anything about plants I didn't even know the actual name of the plant. He said it was called a succulent. But after a few of your videos I figured it was a jade plant which is a succulent. Thanks to your video on how to propagate I was able to save it. It grew even in the winter. Now I'm looking to save other plants and bring some light to my home. Keep it up 👍🏻
The actual name for this plant is Crassula Ovata! And the name jade is just a common name also known as money tree, in china Crassula Ovata is seen as a lucky plant and is given to someone who has just moved into a new home as it’s seen to bring luck and money to the new owner ! I could be wrong with that “fact” i’m sure that is what I’ve heard from the lovely lady at the Chinese Takeaway hehe
Love the idea of thickening up the trunk and learning how to cut stems so new growth direction is determined. Wow. Excellent instruction. And, then using the stems to make more plants. I see lots of gifts for friends happening. Thanks very much.
Cuttings from pruning will reroot. Don’t throw them away! They root really quickly. ❤ I’ve done at least thirty plants like this. Always feel bad when I have to throw any. Usually when I run out of containers to use!
This was really helpful, our Jade insists on growing in one direction and has taken over the windowsill. Just one thought; when it comes to directions, you could just say that the new stem will grow in the same direction as the leaves right below the cut; it was difficult to tell which way your scissors were moving
Thank you, ten thousand times, over. I've been afraid to trim my Jade Plant for many, many years. I need to give it new soil because it's been in the same pot for a good 17 years. In general, all of your videos are helping me a lot in becoming more efficient with my plant care as a new plant person. A lot of things I never knew and I've even been surprised about. Your root pruning video also encouraged me to root prune my murdannia and it's doing really good with perky leaves now! My monstera also grew a huge new leaf and I have mostly your videos to thank for. Thank you for your content and being informative and to the point.

This video is so great, seen so many videos of Jade Pruning but it’s with massive 20 year old Jades and it’s harder to follow and put to the way smaller ones, thank you! :) 💚
I'm trying to prune a jade plant into a cascade bonsai. Normally, jade bonsai are grown with super thick trunks to mimic large trees, but mine wants to grow off to the side and down for some reason, so I'm just going with it. All bonsai look better the thicker the tunk is, and it's typically recommended to grow them outdoors in large pots or even planting them in the ground for one or more seasons in full sun. Let them grow out like crazy, but keep them pruned back. Once the trunk has developed to sufficient size, uproot and train into bonsai. This is typical of bonsai in general as I understand it. Last year I had my jade growing out in full sun, and it responded well.
@@SheffieldMadePlants Well, I've mentioned Herons Bonsai channel before; Peter Chan makes it pretty straight forward and approachable if you give him a watch.
Mine is doing the same, its becoming a proper hanging plant. I tried pruning it as everyone says it promotes thicker thrunk growth, but the additional branches that popped out just keep extending and added more weight. Now I've just accepted that this one won't turn into a jade tree.
I have a few 5-6 year old plants like that but I've never cut them. They're much taller, but also much less bushy. They have a few branches that happened naturally, but they would've had more if I knew that I'm supposed to prune it.
My jade plant lives outside under the shelter of the roof overhang and with southwest exposure. It is old, though I’m not sure how old, but does t look that great because it was badly frost damaged one colder winter. After watching your video I’m encouraged to prune it. It probably would benefit from new container soil too. Do jade plants need fertilizer?

Great video! I noticed a large brown spot on one leaf of your plant. I have a jade outside with lots of these spots all over. Do you know what those are? Thx.
I have a big one that I brought with me across the country. It's about 12 years old and I have never pruned it other than when leaves fell off. I have a massive rotator cuff tear and needs surgery so I am not supposed to pick it up. My husband helped me by bringing it out on the front porch to get some sun when it was a semi cloudy day. The next day however when he was at work it was very sunny and hot and my jade plant got very sunburned with lots and lots of leaves falling off. Now I have a forest of bare branches and don't really know where to start on pruning it. I don't know if I can cut the thick branches or not. Just started your very informative videos, excellent.. I have a Jade plant that is tall and stemmy. I didn't know, previous to seeing your videos, that I should have cut back, to cultify a thicker and shorter plant... My question is, can I cut down the trunk, leaving no leaves, or will this kill my Jade? Pete
I recently pruned the longest stem of my jade how you suggested, it doesn’t seem to be growing new stems but the point I cut it has calloused over, the cutting is looking kinda promising though (it’s been a week now and the cutting has some new growth , but no roots yet). Is it possible that my jade is just too young to prune yet? How old should they be and when do I know when it’s ready for a prune? My jade is very tall, and getting quite top heavy. If I prune some more leaves from the sides of the main stem, will it promote the trunk to grow thicker? It’s currently on constant structural support to stand up at the moment
what do you recommended doing when the stems grew long and lost most of their leaves betwee in the tip and buttom? Can I still trim without having leaves above, so basically leave the stem leafless? Depends on the look you want. An early prune will make it branch out quite low to the soil so you'll have a fairly short trunk. Other option is to let it grow a bit more and then prune to give it more of a tree like shape. Regular pruning thickens the trunk over time

This guy thinking his bushy jade plant isn’t bushy enough and that it’s because he hasn’t pruned it or repotted it in a while.
Meanwhile me overhere with 2 twigs for a jade plant: never pruned it and hasn’t repotted it since i bought it 2 years ago 👀

It pains me when you and others butcher these plants 😢 They’re meant to grow wild as nature does and don’t think intended to be controlled for the sake of aesthetic.
Why is it butchering?
