Oh my, what I would give to have a mouth full of beautiful teeth like yours! It makes me cry when I see how much wrong dentistry has ruined my teeth which I have very little left and ruined my ability to eat and not have so much pain to deal with. It's so expensive to get help with teeth and/or find a dentist like yourself that can help.

Same. I had a dentist suggest veneers. It was hard core advertising his practice did. My dad was sick and I wasn’t paying attention at the visit. He ended up grinding down my six front - healthy teeth - to spikes!!! What could I do? My dad passed the next day and I tried to put behind me. Instead of veneers, he did crowns.. two which fell off I. Public places. He took so much structure, I had to have two implants. Another tooth has a pin in it and I’m waiting for that to break. I cannot ever see retiring because I will need dental insurance and eventually crown replacement, my biggest fear is being elderly and not being able to replace them. It was during this process, my jaw started being painful and locking. It was Dr David in Jacksonville.

This video is to the tee what I’ve got going on - jaw locked close, can stack two fingers sideways (the taker way) with mouth open as much as I can.
I also got some sort of toothache / gum infection going on in my one back molar that has a filling… and it’s on the same side as the dislocated jaw… so I wasn’t sure if they were related.
To boot, I let my little brother some years back snap off my permanent retainer for my bottom teeth with a pair of pliers. So I got two little metal nubs toward the back of both sides… I just checked with my tongue lol, got 4 back teeth passed the nubs

Thank you so much for this explanation ❤️ The person I'm seeing to resolve my TMD issues which I believe is at the stage where the disc has moved forward and won't allow a greater range of motion explained some of what you have but you went into much greater detail. So now I know the why behind the lack of motion and why the pain exists. I wish more dentists had this information as it would have probably saved me so much pain, confusion and now money. I really hope it's not too late for me.

I love your channel. I’m heading to my midwinter dental conference in Boston the weekend and I have a class on the latest In treating TMJ. I’m a dental hygienist whose worked over 30 years in prosthodontic offices. TMJ was taught to us in school but of course not to this extent. The dentist I work for expect us to evaluate the TMJ muscles and function of the joint. As well as the occlusion at each appointment. So you would be surprised at how many dental hygiene are out there helping solve TMJ problems!

I have all these issues except for extreme pain. I had jaw popping for 3 years that kept getting louder. When my jaw recently locked I heard a tearing noise when trying to open. The doctor I talked to said I should continue to open and use my mouth normally. I haven’t had any popping since but it’s still difficult to open my jaw fully. I’m worried it’s getting worse and am not sure what to do.

Hello Doctor, thank you so much for the information. I wish I had found you sooner.
My dentist is charging me $3000 for a tmj splint/mouth guard that pulls my jaw forward. FYI insurance is covering the costs of the visits and Ct scan/MRI and impressions.
Is this realistic or should I go elsewhere?
I am currently locked on the right side for 4 months. Thanks

It's really hard for me to answer that question. I would say if your practitioner has experience treating TMJ, this appliance may help. It may also be helpful to see a TMJ physical therapist when your jaw is locked closed, in conjunction with seeing your dentist.

I know these are symptoms but is #4 a hard rule in all or at least most cases, where it deviates to the locked side when opening? I had a loud pop after months of clicking, extreme pain but felt like pain was centered more in cheek area. Was prescribed diazepam in emergency room and this relieved most of the pain for hours. My jaw doesnt deviate to the painful side when opening, so unsure if this rules out a disc displacement and likely only masseter spasm as I had been massaging it, moving jaw side to side, and stretching wide when this happened.

Dr I want advice and words of reassurance, my TMJ symptoms surfaced after getting braces, it's been months since my jaw has partially locked, my doctor removed brackets and would put them when symptoms are relieved by massages and muscle relaxants since the affected jaw muscles get tight at times, i still have deep bite and affected side's molars don't meet.
My question is should I wait until it's completely relieved to get braces again or is it only braces that would make it better?

Before all of this I sometimes had clicks when I ate but the people around me could hear them. We treat with orthotics, myofascial release, and jaw manipulation and even then it can take 4-6 months (or longer) to resolve with weekly or biweekly appointments. I would recommend seeing a TMJ Dentist or TMJ Physical Therapist.

Hi. I'm from the Philippines and I'd like to have some guidance. There was just a day where in the lock started, my mouth was only able to open with 1.5 finger width. I can open it larger but I need to make it pop loudly first then I would be able to move it larger than 1.5 fingers after. However when I take a rest it just restarts specially in the morning. After 2 months I went to an ENT doctor because I felt a feeling similar to bruising in my jaw. They suggested I go to a dentist to check my teeth and they gave me muscle relaxants. It helped a bit with removing the bruising feeling but I still wasn't able to fully open my mouth, the space grew larger though after the ENT it would be 2 fingers wide. Finally, because I was busy I only went to the dentist after 2 months. They diagnosed it to be TMD and they suggested a TMD splint for the TMD itself and braces for my occlusion. They said my bite was most likely the cause and even if I used a splint without fixing my teeth/bite it would most likely reoccur. Thus, I took the splint and braces. I just want to know what you think about my condition, and where in this video is my TMJ at and what do you think about the treatment plan of my doctor. Thanks, cheers from the Philippines

Hi! Sorry you’re going through this. It’s really hard to say exactly where you are now without examining you. Are you currently in pain? How wide can you open now? Are you wearing braces now?

This whole 5 months there hasn't been pain other that that 2nd month when I went to the ENT doctor at that time I could only open my mouth 1 finger wide and if I try to force my mouth open the noise is so loud that you can hear it 5 feet away. Now, I still experience an initial 2 finger wide lock in the morning. I can enlarge it by opening my mouth wider then making it pop. This doesn't hurt me its just bothersome because my mouth can't make small increments of change. It's like it sometimes slides from a 1 inch opening and when i try to open it slowly it slides to 1.2 inches without going pass 1.1 inches. I currently have braces together with a splint for 24/7

@@theTMJdoc Hi! I just wanted some advice. I've been using the splint for like 3 weeks now. I dont have the usual clicking sound in my jaw but my mouth opening is still limited to 2.5 finger wide. Is this normal? Thank you, from the Philippines.

    • @theTMJdoc
      @theTMJdoc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@marcosarmiento3409 it’s hard to say if this is normal without evaluating you and seeing the splint in person. Often times it is helpful to have the splint as well as myofascial release and jaw manipulation with a TMJ physical therapist. Is there a TMJ physical therapist you can see?

@@theTMJdoc Hi. I don't actually know, there may be a PT at a later stage of the treatment. I'd really like to thank you though, I know I'm giving you a hard time since you are preventing yourself from giving me a misdiagnosis. Your videos and exercises help me a lot. The idea of just knowing doctors that actually give their tips and sharing their knowledge about this condition helps me. I noticed that some Americans think of this problem as people being oversensitive and not treating it as a real problem. It's worse here in the Philippines wherein this is treated by most as something that should be lived with their whole life. Thank you again!

I have had locking and clicking since I was 13, I used to suffer from jaw lock, whenever I massaged my jaw, and turned my head to the other side, it would open up.
Now I'm 20, i don't face locking, but I still have to move my jaw to the other side to open my mouth.
I think before it gets worse, I should get it treated.
What doctor should I do to? A dentist doesn't seem to know anything and simply advices on not to clench.
Also, can this be resolved completely? To be able to ask my mom for money, I need to let her know every detail 😅
