If I was Nissan, I woulda taken a slightly different approach on pricing. I woulda thrown the LSD and the best brakes on EVERY car and then let everything else be a la carte enhancements. Upgraded leather, upgraded sound system, bigger set of wheels, etc. The only thing really missing on the base Z is the LSD. Make the base price $1000 higher and throw it in every car. Then you really are undercutting the Supra by $10K and they will fly off the shelves. If someone wants to upgrade the other stuff they can, but the basics are all there.
As a car enthusiast I agree. But I think 90% of people buying it wouldn’t care, much less know about, LSD. SO FROM MARKETING PERSPECTIVE, a grand lower without lsd makes sense.
I'd rather buy an aftermarket LSD. They're 100× better anyways. The stocker just becomes a paperweight. The base, I believe, is more for the racer minded. You always change LSD and brakes. So why pay for "better" OEM stuff that you're just going to replace?
Exactly. Hold on to the Supra, cause tests and videos has already been shown that the Supra is quicker/faster than the Z. Clearly. The Z is just hype. So owning both is not bad.
Because the supra looks like and is a real sports car, not a sports sedan. Subaru killed the STI I was saving for so Supra it is... imo, best looking sports car under 100k.
I’m glad both Toyota and Nissan offer two great sports cars for consumers to choose and I think they are both closely matched in overall so it’s just matter of personal preference, can’t really go wrong with either one. For me, I am leaning toward the Z because I can relate this car to the iconic Datsun 240Z of the 70s. The Z is also all Nissan and is less expensive than the Supra. I had the 1985 Toyota Supra bought new and drove it for 23 years and 290K dependable miles.
@@GT-RTData9 obviously I am being hyperbolic to make a point. 10k$ is too much for what we get at performance grade, I think getting just lsd and tires is enough for 400 that’s basically 2-3k$ instead.

FYI as a Q50 owner and experience with the VR30 , this engine can get way more power with just bolt ons. So you open up the exhaust and add intakes and you can get a extra 150 hp or more with a good tune . So a Z with bolt on can easily be in the 500 hp or more. I got my q50 with the 300 hp VR and FBO and iam at 440 whp. Its a great engine if you know how to work on it, and this makes the z a great base platform .
That's amazing because when this Z came out I was sold. I am a huge fan of a 240z. So this car is like a dream come true. I'm selling my car as soon as i have the amount to buy that beast.
@@stgrsa What extra work? For what? And my car I love it but it's an open deck. I'd have to do a CDC conversion to make power. Idk if I want to do that. I'm not sure.
I really liked the comparison. Good video. But why do you write 40000$ in the Thumbnail if it‘s the 50000$ spec? Seems clickbaity to me, which I don‘t think you need. The videos are good enough!
I think he did that because the sport and performance technically have the same engine and power. It’s all the extra mechanical bells and whistles that obviously separate the two models, but essentially you can still get a 400hp Nissan Z for $40k. That’s my insight ...
@@HollowM2 I should have known that, I drive a Miata! :-) The BRZ/86 definitely hit the mark. I just hope they stick around! The world needs these machines. I grew up staring at supras and 300ZXs in showrooms but could never afford them.
When it comes to the looks, I think the biggest issue with the supra is that the shorter wheelbase kinda changes what we know as a supra. With the Z, they really paid attention to detail with the design and respected the Z heritage. Sure the FT-1 was a cool concept but it loses some character when they had to follow regulations to make it production ready.
A90 supra, with the short wheelbase and compact figure, is made for California canyons and track duty. The Z is more like the A80 supra as a GT sports car, made for daily driving and gran touring purposes. I think once you try to take the Z to its limits with downforce and track oriented parts, its flaws will start to show whereas the A90 supra shines at its limits.
@@Gr1MM240 I was clearly talking about it in terms of looks and design but I get that you're dumb. I mean if you're going there, they have completley dishonored the heritage by using an infinity sedan engine.

Review doesn’t give anymore info than what a layperson would say about these two cars. Performance - same. Ride quality -same. Price of Z as tested is $50k, not the $40k as you keep saying.
Agree, but for 40K you still get same power, just smaller tires and no LSD which is a shame. Not sure that the performance package is worth and extra 10K, but you know, that's what most enthusiasts are going to buy.
Because this video is shite, or he is very very biased. A "wash" between the interiors? Really, the Z has door panels and switches carried directly over from the 370z which was already at 12 year old car. The Toyota interior is literally a BMW, a company known for making some of the best interiors atm.
@@yasiona2946 yea this guy is a joke. I unsubscribed from his channel. He made a channel off of the MKV Supra launch and is now needing to increase his views and subs so moving onto the new Z. You lose credibility by comparing the Z and Supra interiors. One is a BMW and the other is a 15 year old 350/370Z Nissan interior as you said. Complete joke of a channel and review.
This was what I thought too. Toyota has a tendency to understate the HP numbers. A GR86 dynos at 250 HP and not 230 HP. I would guess a Supra dynos at 400
The Z is exciting! I love what I’m hearing about it. Sounds driver-focused and satisfying to drive, which I look forward to doing! The Supra, to me, is too much of a compromise that leaves me short of really wanting one. Although the BMW (underrated) powertrain is not necessarily a bad thing, the design compromises to fit on the Z4 platform is where I lose any “want” that might have been there. Look forward to experiencing and perhaps buying a new Z! I wish Nissan would have called it the 400 Z.
The Supra also has a few annoying issues like the buffeting when you open the windows. Minor annoyances that can be fixed but the Z is fine from the factory.
Well, calling it a 400Z wouldn't make sense. The number was indicative of engine size. For example 350Z = 3.5L, 370Z = 3.7L, etc. A 400Z would suggest it's a 4.0L, but it isn't.
Okay. So reason why he said 40k and showed you a 50k z. Was to give you the difference that you will miss when not getting the 50k. Which personally don’t mind. 10k mods will make the Z stand out like the supra
Base trim doesn’t come with LSD only the top trim does nor does it come with the better brakes and suspension . So your telling me you will go out and buy an base model to go void warranty just to get the feature the performance version has ? And mod for mod the VR30 doesn’t make the same power reliably as the B58 found in the Supra.
@@z32twinturbo13 Modding the Z will be a lot more expensive than the Supra. You will need to spend at least 6 grand to be able to be in the 600s. And that's assuming you are doing the job yourself

This is the best comparison video of the cars I have seen. I especially like the way you presented the instrument panel. Very nice. You get a good feel for actually sitting in one of the cars. Very informative and even handed.
Supra wins imo. You left out some premium features in the Supra that are missing in the Z, like full leather seating on the premium, HUD, and upgraded climate controls. You’re right about the 40k Z being a good deal but the performance model at 50k loses that appeal.
Supra Premium does have some more features. Overall it’s the classic price vs performance dynamic so well played out with the Corvette and now with these two.
To me I still prefer the Supra because it looks sexier, has a straight six that's proven, Brembo brakes, adaptive suspension, a HUD, and a more refined interior with 2 cupholders. Plus a valved exhaust! Also no LSD in the Sport trim forces you to the higher trim to get one makes it a hard sell to me.
I have a supra so im pretty biased but im glad the Z exists. Its not as good as they were claiming so far, but its still a great thing in my eyes. It seems like a sports car revival since theres healthy competition with toyotas GR corolla and this new z. Im excited to see where this goes :)
My answer is, if your budget is $40k, get the Z and save up for a better LSD + wheels/brakes/tires that are better than what you get in the performance model. If it's $50k+ get the Supra with its proven B58, refinement, esp when the manual comes out. Honestly, performance model should have been $45k imo. For the upgrades you're getting, $10k is a very hefty price. $5k would have been a lot more reasonable. Also would have been a lot more compelling in comparison to the Supra.
I honestly think both cars seem great. Own an A90 Supra right now and previously owned a 370Z. Supra is light years better than the 370 was, but I’ll have to wait to drive the new Z. I do think there is a lot of BMW collaboration haters out there though who haven’t driven the new Supra. I’m excited to see the Z relevant again, I also don’t really see how it “feels more Japanese.” Haters gonna hate.
I totaled my '17 Z and my settlement payout was good enough to get me the Supra. But I wanted to wait for the new Z to come out and I'm glad I waited. I will be getting one if I ever get a chance. I told all my Nissan dealers that I will be paying it in full so I could have a better chance to own one when they get one.
@@bjornironsides6474 I owned a BMW and traded it for an Infiniti after my BMW maintenance guy told me "I love these cars but I wouldn't own one without a warranty".
I love both, but the the $39,990 is for the "meh" Z that has open diff, 245mm tires and brakes outta the maxima is just misleading. The $50k Z is the proper sport car IMHO.
The Sport is essentially the tuners option. Those are all things that tuners will swap out. I think it would be dope if Nissan offered an optional LSD... or I would say for 2024 increase the base price to $42k and just make the LSD standard.
You can take that 10k you save by getting the base and get yourself a LSD, brakes, wheels and tires and outperform both the Performance Z and the Supra.
Absolutely love the side profile on the Z and the back looks awesome, would definitely keep the original look if I got my hands on it. The Supra however, looks great too, but I’d be much more tempted to add many things to it like a spoiler and some body parts
There is a Supra in the parking lot at work. In person, I definitely follows current design language of too many lines, angles, swoops, and such. I just cannot bring myself to like it. The Z however looks clean, muscular, and not really retro but it clearly states where it came from magnificently.
Z fan boy love. Frame old. Engine old. Heavy like 370. 3,500+ I think Nissan did the minimum to develop. Just an update to 370. Still might be nice but not ground breaking. Supera 3,200 to 3,400. Solid BMW engine. Car looks hot in person. Tough look.
Both the VR30 and the B58 engines came out around 2015/2016. Yes the Z is a bit heavier but it's not drastically heavy in comparison to other sports cars in the same price range. For 10k less than the 3.0 Supra you get essentially a really close competitor and both engines take mods very well
The worst part is that only one of these two is still Japanese. I have owned several Z cars as well as several real Supra’s. The A90 IMO is a complete travesty to the name Supra. Love the new Z and If they make it in a roadster I will buy one for my wife.

When it comes to looks I prefer the Z, there's just something about the new Supra I just can't get past. I've really liked earlier Supras I've owned a Mk2 and two Mk3s but for whatever reasons this new one doesn't appeal to me, honestly it doesn't even looks it was designed by Toyota at all. (Yes I know it a basically a BMW with a Supra lable.)
You really can’t go wrong with either of them, they are both really great cars. Even the performance is so close that in a race between them the winner will simply be whoever is the better driver that day.
As a Vette owner, depends what trim levels you want in the GS. Obviously a 3lt is going to set you back more than a 1lt trim wise. The Supra is the better choice between it and the Z, especially when it comes to resale values down the road. If you're someone who trades every 4 - 5 years, this is a no-brainer decision.
A friend of mine traded a C7 GrandSport for a Supra and then traded THAT for a C8. Best of the 3 was the Supra, by far. He has since traded the C8 as well. Other reviewers are putting the Z as more fun to drive than the Supra. I personally didn't like the Supra's windows-down buffeting problem.

It is slower. The bmw sourced i6 in the Supra is notoriously underrated and the Toyota is lighter. Combined with the insane ZF 8 speed the Z doesn’t stand a chance in a straight line. BUT, you can buy the Z with a manual. At this point that’s the really big deal about the Z.
I think if aftermarket performance potential is an issue then hands down the supra. the fact that it is a bmw gives it a huge advantage. since bmw and the aftermarket has been developing the i6 turbo bmw motors for almost two decades now.
Depends how the other parts hold up. MK5 supra axles are shattering at only 600whp. And when those auto transmissions fail.... you may as well scrap the car.

Very subjective. Some like the Supra’s styling, I don’t think it’s bad but I don’t think it’s good either, just looks weird honestly. I like the z styling much better. However, the 50k price tag for the performance trim which is what I want hurts for sure. Will wait a few years till they’re readily available and maybe even pick up a nismo version.
According to Car and Driver’s tests, the 2021 Supra did 388 hp at wheels, and they said “Remove the driveline losses, and the engine appears to be capable of 400 horsepower at the crank”. So yeah… the Supra makes more power than advertised, and I think it makes more hp than the Z at the wheels.
If I was only going to own it for 3 years I would go with the BMW (I've owned two) but I tend to keep my cars for 5-6 years so it's the Z that I'm interested in.
The b58 while a bmw engine is incredibly reliable and most likely bmws best overall engine. Toyota made bmw tweak the engine to fit their standards and while is most likely is Toyotas least reliable car it’s probably more reliable than the brand new z. Toyota wouldn’t put out a car with traditional bmw reliability.
Unpopular opinion: If you're planning on paying more than $30k on car, prices shouldn't be a concern. You've already chose to make a big investment so choose the car that would make you happy. Also, I feel like if a Nismo trim came out, chances are that it would be the same price as a Supra and IMO the Supra looks like a premium trim already.
The Bmw looks really good the Z looks good also. but if you want a true Japanese sports car like myself i would choose the Z and i have a 75 280z and it was the old days of the Z car the real deal and i have a S14 thats built also.
As far as performance is concerned, the 6cyl-turbo. Supra competes with the base model Z, because it too is a 6cyl-turbo car. The Supra obviously performs better, but when compared tot he base Z, the Supra is $14k more. So what you SLIGHTLY (and I mean very slightly) loose in performance in the Z compared to the Supra, you gain in money savings. Put that $14k into a Z, and watch what it would do to a stock 6cyl-turbo Supra 👍
It's a regurgitated 350Z with a price hike to $50k if you want the things EVERY Supra comes standard with. Even the 2.0 at $43k. Except the Supra isn't built on a 20 year old platform, has Brembo's, good tires, the Premium gets an Electronic Diff, not a mechanical one, and has upscale build quality and materials. For $5k more. So do the math lol. Oh, and in case you missed the drag race video.... the Supra destroys the Z.
I think the styling of the Toyota GR86 is better than the Z. The 86 seems more lightweight and fun to drive. Always the Supra was in a class of its own and not compared to the Z. I’d rather take either a 86 or Supra over a Nissan.

Also a point about MacPherson vs Double Wishbone. Generally, The latter is better. But modern MacPhersons are lighter unsprung weight and has proper camber gain in the range of shock travel.

Even the Performance is $5k cheaper and comes with a better interior, manual and it's not a Z4 on the inside.
Because this video is shite, or he is very very biased. A "wash" between the interiors? The Supra is underrated in its HP by alot. So much so that it can't be left out of reviews.. Its been tested and proved several times before.

And it's a Genuine Z
The Supra also has a few annoying issues like the buffeting when you open the windows. Minor annoyances that can be fixed but the Z is fine from the factory.
Well, calling it a 400Z wouldn't make sense. The number was indicative of engine size. For example 350Z = 3.5L, 370Z = 3.7L, etc. A 400Z would suggest it's a 4.0L, but it isn't.

The Z platform has more aftermarket support then the Supra. Lol
The WRX desperately needs to add another 20 - 25 horsepower in order to compete with these cars. Back in 2002 the WRX had 227 hp and the Z had 286. Now the WRX has 271 and the Z has 400.
I think Subaru is giving up on competing in the sports car space. They've axed the STi and will likely never push the WRX beyond 275hp.
@@shawndejong6699 l agree with you. It’s sad. That 2.4 liter engine in the 2023 WRX can easily crank out 350+ horsepower. The fact that they won’t even give it 290 is insane. It’s like they want the Elantra N and Type R to outsell it.
@@cajunotaku3256 The EJ25? She's a little dated to say the least. The FE motors are decent but require better bottom ends (read: forged) to cover the durability side. I have my hopes that Subaru will do something fun with the BRZ, pushing that car to 335-350HP turbocharged would be an absolute RIOT.
The wrx is a compact all purpoae sedan brother not a sports coupe. Wrong segment lo l
@@shad3128 Performance wise the 370Z and WRX were pretty close. You just had the added benefit of a back seat. Different cars, same performance, likely heavily cross shopped by those that can afford them.
I think Nissan priced the Z a little too high for the performance model. I think it’s a hard sell when you can pay a few thousand more for the Supra. At $43-$45k the Z performance would sell all day.
40k is not high for a 400hp twin turbo car that looks as good as it does
@@joestuehmer7967 let them hate , depreciation will make this a dream in 2 years
$40k for a base Z is actually a really good deal compared to everything else priced at the same bracket.
Supra comes with 2 engine the I4 and I6 the Z comes with only V6 with more horsepower all throughout every trim the I4 cost 43k mind you and 55k for the I6
@@joestuehmer7967 Yeah, don't forget the dealer markups these cars will have. You will be getting in the Supra range with fees and everything. Just like when the Type R came out
The new Nissan Z brings back memories of my Nissan 300ZX I bought new way back in 1990. It was the non-turbo version and was unique to North America because it didn't have a 'T' top and had cloth seats.
Even if the Z was a little slower, I would still take the nissan...
Same, being slower isn't deal breaker and it is only slightly
I would be ok playing the extra for the Supra mainly because you would be getting a much better quality and looking interior
The Z looks way better IMO. Supra looks like a remote control toy but not in a good way.
Yet the new supra has more HP than the z & much lighter. Don't let the numbers fool you.
I feel like this guy is being paid by Nissan.
Love both of these cars and if I had infinite money I would have both but if I had to choose it’s gotta be the z . At first I wasn’t the biggest fan of how it looked ,but it really grew on me and now I love the way it looks.
@Justen G yes I will take the slower z with a manual but imo the new z is plenty capable enough judging from every car journalist review of the car.
@Justen G dang that sucks for you I had a q60 and worked good for me until I sold it😂
@Justen G I totally get being burned by a car lol. I had a kia and I refuse to own another one.
But yes, I would agree the b58 is possibly the best inline 6 turbo in production.
@@Mrpancake72 b58 is really amazing but not the best . The best inline 6 is the s58 that’s the dream engine that I hope a newer trim of the Supra will have .
@Justen G blown turbos here at 16k miles 🤣 2017 q50 3.0t
Your opinion in this segment means a whole lot because of your intimate knowledge of the Japanese sports car market. No doubt the Z will sell, but do you think its STYLING holds it back?
Nope. Think most either like the styling or are indifferent.
Why does the thumbnail pricing show the up trim Supra vs the entry level Nissan. Clickbait…thumbs down from me.
While it is is misleading at least you can get the top engine for that price
With sales tax and dealer fees that 40000 is gonna be 50000 if that makes it better
@@jeffwolfe4058 the number for the Supra will grow as well 😖
Well done on this video review. Subscribed
As a Supra owner I like the retro style of the new Z. But all in all I love my bmw Supra.
No regrets here either. Glad all these cars are back.
Prefer the cleaner lines of the Z….the Supra looks like it was designed by a committee.
Robert, You'll still lose when re-sale value comes.
Great to see these side by side!
The Bmw looks really good the Z looks good also. but if you want a true Japanese sports car like myself i would choose the Z and i have a 75 280z and it was the old days of the Z car the real deal and i have a S14 thats built also.
Man you people make BMW sound like a bad company 😥😥 this aint the 2000s any more .
The Z has won so many racing championships than the Supra..
I'd take the Z. Great power and manual trans. All Japanese for me.
Supra is manual next year!
@@Skizzy461 Will the "I would only buy the new Supra if it comes with a manual" put their money where their mouth is?
P.S.
I didn't hear any fussin' about the GT-R R35 Nissan having any Manual Transmission. Which the R35 is praised.
@@charlesbakston7414 I think if the Supra was a rebadged RCF or LC500 with paddles, people would complain but appreciate what it is later

I don’t know why people care that it’s a bmw. Cool car, who cares.
The Z is cool but I prefer the Supra, I think it has a bit more of an exotic look to it. I really enjoy how clean the Z looks but its a bit too conservative to me, ironically I think that the exterior of the Z is very 'German looking'.
Huge Toyota fan, but in this comparison, the fact the Nissan is all Nissan, wins for me.
A minute or so in and the comment about getting into a Z for quite a bit cheaper…? Literally a $3k-5k tap at roughly the same trim levels….. Pricing in thumbnail is misleading as well. Why all the douchery?
Since 1989, I have been a TOYOTA FAN, SINCE I OWNED AN '89 Pick-Up Truck...
'89 Toyota Standard Bed, 4 speed manual Transmission... It was a Truck I drove to 370,000 before selling it for a Toyota 4X4 X-CAB V-6 Pick-Up...
Also a point about MacPherson vs Double Wishbone. Generally, The latter is better. But modern MacPhersons are lighter unsprung weight and has proper camber gain in the range of shock travel. This is why all Porsche 911s (except the latest gt3) are MacPherson front, and heck the Caymans are MacPherson front AND rear. Double wishbone IS better, but not as much as one would think ;)
Great review, quick question the 9 speed Auto in the new Z is it a ZF unit or Jatco-Mercedes unit like the Q60?
Auto is Merc 9g-tronic. Manual is Jatco
I’m still a bit worried about the Nissan Twin Turbo motor, as I have had friends experience big power train issues in Q50’s and Q60’s. Hoping Nissan optimized it just a bit for reliability as I love this 400Z!

The base model z not coming with an LSD would automatically rule it out for me. Can't wait to see some reviews to see how it compares around the road and the track to the other sports cars on the market.
Yeah… would love to see a Sport Plus or middle trim with LSD and brakes. Maybe in a couple years. They need to keep it fresh.
I pick the BMW Supra all day every day it looks better everywhere you look at it except in the inside… The Z Look so simple in the outside they Side view and the from view don’t say anything, I think they’re 370 Z look better in the outside
The Supra does have a more usable hatch area, but the rest is really personal preference.
@@revmatchtv Hagerty posted a drag race between them that suggests otherwise….
You say the supra has very soft features and is very rounded, but looking at the MK4 is also quite rounded. The front is a modern redesign of the MK4 front as well, so not sure why you said there wasn't much history in the design?
It may be mostly BMW, but at least Toyota can take credit for all the fake vents.
For real. The fake vents is honestly a deal breaker
@@MrMegatron85 Nahh it's just a styling element. Just stuff on the car. May as well say the hood or roof or door or bumper is a dealbreaker because it's all just stuff hung onto the car. You could take it all off and still have something that could be driven, so it's all really just 'styling'.
This is a bit of a silly comparison. It’s a tuned Supra, so it’s not really a true comparison with what most people will be able to get from a dealership.
I set it to factory tune for this brief comparison.
The Z has a manual hand brake while the Zupra has an electric hand brake and even the manual version Zupra retains the electric hand brake ... 👎
True but a much bigger fail is the Z not 'allowing' you to do a burnout.
