Locals tend to forget foreigners usually not used to spicy nasi lemak, Wanjo’s offers the sweeter and less spicy version for them to experience nasi lemak. I don’t like spicy sambal. I agree Village Park is overrated, and I agree there’s better nasi lemak too. But Wanjo is not bad actually and most locals actually just didn’t like the sweet sambal. Their dishes actually pretty decent.

Wanjo is overrated BUT it’s a fairly good benchmark for first timers to try Nasik lemak. But once u start living in Malaysia and you try various nasi lemak stalls everywhere in the country you’d understand why we can eat nasi lemak everyday. There is so much variety in styles of cooking rice, styles of dishes served with it and of course there are sambal that mean business, no sweetness and more kick

    • @hungrytoexplore

Homecooked nasi lemak is always the best.
Nasi lemak used to be so simple with only an egg, cucumber, fried anchovies, fried ground nut and sambal, and only eaten for breakfast. Time has changed that now it is eaten at anytime of the day with loads of side dishes. For the rice, it is fragrant with pandan leaves and fenugreek seeds and cooked with a little oil to make sure it is cooked nicely and not lumpy. Some put lemongrass too. And sometimes the rice is steamed. Anyway, I hope you will find one that’s packed nicely in banana leave. It’s really good.

Always bring your visiting friends to Wanjo, there are a few reasons, firstly it is in a shop not by the street. The cleaning team in Wanjo is top notch and impressive. You’re not wrong about the sweet sambal.. I myself can’t handle sweet flavours in savoury dishes especially when it comes to sambal.. for your information most of the restaurants that serves Nasi Lemak dishes their sambal is not authentic anymore because they try to make it less spicy and can be accepted by foreigners taste buds.. and it’s actually quite disappointing for me.. I’m growin up in Serdang area when I was little which is my breakfast is only nasi lemak from the various stall.. it kinda brought some flashback into my mind which back then the sambal isn’t as sweet as it is now.. I might say sometimes not sweet at all it’s truly spicy but I love the taste.. and one more thing stall Nasi Lemak in my opinion is better than in a restaurant especially wanjo.. for me Wanjo Nasi Lemak is not that good compare to Authentic Nasi Lemak.. the sambal should be spicy and rich.. not sweet and watery.. I hope in your journey here.. you’ll find the best Nasi Lemak here and hopefully you got a chance to try the authentic Nasi Lemak here.. have a beautiful day my friend

As a Malaysian, I find most of the dishes served here are too sweet. Especially the sambal. I don’t cook with any sugar. It’s a challenge to find a good sambal that’s not sweet. It’s a recent thing and I can’t understand why. Maybe people’s tastebuds have adapted to the sweetness. I find upscale restaurants serve dishes that are not as sweet. Anyway, have a great time eating in Malaysia. 😄
