"Little Joe is knocked unconscious and his horse is stolen by an outlaw. He wanders through the desert until he comes to a ghost town. He collapses in the street. When he comes to, finds himself being nursed back to health by a beautiful girl in Martinville, a quiet place full of friendly if mysterious townsfolk. After his recovery, Joe is surprised to be offered the position of Sheriff by the town's leaders. They tell him they need him to save them from a band of marauding outlaws. A woman attired in black warns Joe of the town's previous shameful betrayal of her husband, the town's previous sheriff. Still, Joe organizes resistance against the outlaws. In the end, Joe is forced to face the outlaws as the townsfolk grow increasingly diffident; and he is forced to come face to face with the final dark mystery of Martinville." "During my era, the sixties, The Twilight Zone and Bonanza were household titles, and Rod Serling was a household name, as were the names of the four main characters of Bonanza. Having seen this Bonanza episode more than once, I find it to be one of my favorites. And though Cy Chermack wrote it, with all due respects to Serling he could not have outdone Chermack, at least not in this case. (Of course, Rod Serling did have a few Old West episodes.) The start is not an anomaly: on a very hot summer day Little Joe is riding through the desert, sees a man lying on the ground, attempts to help the man, only for that latter man to rise, pull a gun on him and steal his horse which had a set of saddlebags on its back which, in turn, contained two thousand dollars. After the outlaw rides away Little Joe goes to the nearby town where, naturally, he is extremely fatigued; a very attractive teen-age girl, performed very well by Davey Davidson in this one of her earliest roles, nurses Joe back to health. He learns from some of the people there in the town of Martinsville that they are scared of an outlaw band that had once marauded the town which is filled with scared people. At the same time the late sheriff's wife is cold, non-smiling, and bitter because her husband had been killed previously, thanks to, again, the cowardly denizens. (The tall, dark-haired, dark-eyed Doris Dowling would have been attractive if she had not portrayed the type of character she did.) Because they had helped them and, thus, he wants to do them a favor, Little Joe is made sheriff, and one of the main duties he feels needs to be done is for him to instill bravery in the wincing people there. Toward the end the outlaws return, some of the men go against those outlaws who are settled in the nearby cliffs, and Little Joe kills the outlaw leader, only to discover that he actually killed the man who had robbed him. After Joe's brothers and father finally find him, he briefly shares with them about Martinsville. Of course, the sometimes-hard-headed Joe does not believe the brief account Ben, in turn, shares with him when he tells Joe that Martinsville has been a ghost town for many years, and it had been cursed. Because of the supernatural/surreal aspect of this episode, it has definitely been unforgettable to me. Again, The Twilight Zone has nothing to surpass this." Written by daviddaphnered on IMDb.com

After a hiatus of about 50 years, I've been watching these Grjngo posts and have found a new respect for "Bonanza".

The shows from the 1950-1970s are much better than contemporary shows.

I'm 43. I prefer these to the trash TV we're forced to watch today. Smallville being the only exception for me.
Too much gun fighting and vigilante justice for me, but some episodes are actually interesting and actually historical, and the acting and directing was always excellent.
Many TV shows dont age well but Bonanza is like Whiskey. Its actually gets *BETTER* with age
ahh still at 65 watching the reruns on you-tube 4 floors up in bed.
Fiction or makeup this episode is the stuff that makes Bonanza a legend and the wild west a great history. Thank you Bonanza. May your legend everlast.
Aldrinn marvo Lamin: That's a common thing with many good shows that run a long time, IMO. Shows like Law and Order, CSI, etc. The great variety of types of shows and differing points of view and aspects of the characters adds something special.

I havent watched Bonnza since I was a young child .
Now I know why it was so popular .
It was not just because the main characters were good. .
The supporting cast were also good .
The plots were also very good .

Davey Davidson who played Joe’s haunting love interest, Louise, was all over TV shows in the late 50s, 60s and 70s. You can see her from Rawhide to Mannix to Rich Man, Poor Man and about 200 other guest appearances on TV.
Doris Dowling who plays the former sheriff’s wife (and at first appears to personify evil) is straight out of the great black and white film noir era of Hollywood. Many films worth watching.

Joe even saw the dead sheriff's widow. Now, SHE was the one who put the curse on the whole town to condemn them all for their cowardice ~ and then she stayed WITH them all. I guess she wanted to spend eternity washing their faces for being cowards.

This is definitely a re-watch episode to understand it... one thing I noticed. when the townspeople talk to each other their voice sounds like an echo, especially the dead sheriff's wife, who seems like a tormented soul, this episode takes a few views to appreciate it, once you know the plot, it's a good watch...

A-train: This is why I'm OK with watching decent movies or shows more than once. I can watch from different points of view, looking for things other than following the plot as the main thing after the first time. Or understanding certain plot hints better (being more obvious once you know the story, etc).
Good shows take good work from a variety of people, and it's great to see how it all comes together.
Brave Little Joe, the fairy-tale type of the Knight in shining armor or the heroic, dashing Prince who breaks the witch's curse with his bravery, compassion for the cursed one(s), & sacrificial love.
What a wonderful Western version of an age old fairy tale.

Military men receive medals for Courage & Honorable Service, so to should Little Joe have saved the Sheriff's Badge as a Badge of Honor & Bravery.
Those town people's souls would then have peace at last. Joe had saved them from the curse.

Depends on the age of the children. I really feel that numerous episodes are not appropriate for elementary school children. This episode was just creepy. I would not have liked watching it as a child.

@@user-pd7il3xz5j watched The Twilight Zone young and got really creepy comic books mixed with funny ones in a stack whenever we got sick - wouldn't have minded. There were books of fairy takes, some pretty grisley from various cultures that we could check out of libraries too. And any weird relative that told a good ghost story was valued by kids.
I had to add on: You may be right on very young, as Psycho and 13 ghosts disturbed me then. But I read early and covered The Red Pony & Lost Horizon in second grade (didn't much understand but recognized it 13 years latter when flipping channels). After that I still read kids books, but there wasn't any keeping me out of anything.
The difference was it was never sold or pushed on us like some disgusting books now days.
With my own. Youngest self-censored even during prime time, turning his back & preferring to run the ceeks and woods to TV. The one older went to a few flicks with disturbing scenes. but it is different if a parent is there to explain them. She turned Clan if The Cave Bear's Aylla into twins, then added Emilio Estavez as Billie the Kid into imaginary play pals during a time when I had to work too much, so I tend to think that protection is wise as long as imagination isn't stifled. And a few of the cartoons I've watched with a grandchild are disgustingly indoctrinating-though widely praised anyhow.
By 12, I'd just walk in a drugstore and buy whatever book I wanted- too long a story. For most very little ones, you are right. I conceed.
@G Most kids can understand creepy things when they discuss them with caring adults. The first creepy movie I saw (rerun, because I wasn't born when it premiered in 1959) was "On The Beach". I was about 6 and I loved it, even though much of the intertwined storylines went over my head. I especially loved the ending of the original (more than the remake) and it inspired me to improve my reading so I could eventually read the book.

I've always liked this one - an obvious homage to 'Twilight Zone,' and done very well - the story, the acting, the music score, everything, including the ending and the great TZ-like twist.

Written by the late great Cy Chermak, who wrote the movie 4D Man and Kolchak the Night Stalker. It was the only episode of Bonanza he wrote, but it was unforgettable.

Joe is so handsome and his eyes fascinate me, I loved everything about him
The echoing quality of the voices of the townfolk when Joe isn’t around is an eerie and effective way of letting the audience know that Joe wasn't hallucinating. He was dealing with actual ghosts, even if he didn't realize it at the time. It's also satisfying that he evidently broke the curse by getting the townspeoole to fight with him.
That’s a great observation, have to watch and listen to it again.

I remember being so creeped out by the ending when I was little seeing the ghost of that woman watching Joe leave then disappear was always unsettling to me.

This is actually a theme of several westerns, only in reverse. High Plaines Drifter and Pale Rider, the main protagonist is a ghost delivering retribution to real people.

Yeah except for literally the last thing his father said before he remembered it. Plus that doesn’t prove anything anyways. Not really, ok he was in that ghost town and delusionally thought he was sherif and found a sherif badge while believing he was talking to people. How does that prove there were really spirits there

The hidden moral of this story is that when someone becomes a victim of an act of your cowardice you become a prisoner of your guilty conscience.
The way i see it, is a coward imprisons him/herself & becomes the hapless victim of his/her own cowardice.
A coward creates his/her own prison of body & especially soul.
Shameful.
No Coward will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, says the only Lord, Master & Savior of Mankind, recorded in the last few verses of the last Book of the Bible, the Book of Revelation.

It surprised me Ben was not worried or angry when Joe did not come home . Love how the music is just different enough from the Twilight Zone theme to avoid a lawsuit. David Rose, Bonanza's musical director was the first husband of Judy Garland. Did you notice Joe brushes off Mrs. O'Brien's warning to go with pretty young Louise?
Yes that Ben didn't act in character gave the start a creepy foreshadowing.
@Dana Dowling. Yes he was!! He lied at first to Hoss when he told Hoss that he was going to bed. Hoss knew that his pa was lying so he told his pa that he wanted to go out and look for Little Joe. Then, Ben agreed. You obviously don't read body language very well, but I can tell when a person is lying.

Awesome Episode from a TV era of great western TV series like Bonanza, Gunsmoke, etc. Remember a s a kid, seeing this Episode at our neighbors house, wasn;t yesterday. I was a teenager and I'm 71 now- There's a few episodes of Bonanza that i recall the Story name- this is one for sure.

It is a life changing episode.
This episode is eerily similar to what is happening to society worldwide today and for the past almost two years. People have been trained to be so fearful that they are willing to give up all of their freedoms. Our World War II veterans must be turning in their graves. They fought and gave their lives for our freedoms and we are throwing them all away without a fight. Willing participants in our own demise and too dumb to see it.
So many allegorical parallels in some of these.

Now all it needs is that opening, spoken masterfully in that timeless characteristic biting intense clipped edgy signature voice of a legendary dapper sophisticated cigarette wielding producer, famous for his serious pertinent monologues that goes something like the following:
Portrait of a sturdy young man named Joseph Cartwright, or known commonly as "Lil Joe", the youngest of three Brothers who with their Father, Ben Cartwright, owns and operates one of the largest and riches timberlands in Nevada, called, as we all know as that leading star of a popular Western TV show, The Ponderosa . Right now, as he's returning home from a business deal, alone on horseback, his Father and brothers are preparing a surprise birthday party for Joseph, but he won't be there to celebrate the special occasion with them. Instead a turn of events will have him wonder into a desolate forgotten town, who's only inhabitants are empty decrepit buildings, visited only by tumble weeds, wails of lonely winds, and vagrant desert dust. But Joseph will soon find out that this town, seemingly deserted, is still occupied by it's townsfolk, only to have long ago moved away and taken up permanent residence in another town, where they are waiting to meet him, but it's a different unique town, a kind of town which can't be found on a map, except that of The Twilight Zone.

Val- ahh know a real ghost at a rest spot in rai valley off new zealand. it told me ahh was one off them before attackin g derick Foster who was asleep behind me. Foster told everyone latter that O'Dwyer- me was more than human. in 1990 ahh was brutely murdered then brought back too life, and since then can see and hear beings that no other human can.
Always wondered how they ride their horses at night without any lights.🤔
The stars or moon... or if it's a familiar trail, the horse will know the way and animals have better night vision than humans.
Don't horses see better than us like other mammals with reflective lenses. You can also use peripheral vision to walk in the dark. But good question.

So strange...Joe wakes up in strange town, but doesn't request that the doctor and his daughter send a telegram to his family.

This is My favorite one.
I've seen some reviews of Bonanza that call this one of the WORST episodes of the series, and I can't understand that. Great premise, well acted ... This is one of the series' best--damned-near Twilight Zone.
So did Joe see the town or not ? Why didn’t he show the badge to them? Guess we would never know n the answer would go dead n buried just like the town.

Exactly.
All he had to do was show them the badge instead of throwing it on the ground.
Anyone else would have kept it along with some other souvenirs to show when retelling the story.
He saw it. I think the key is in what his father told him about when a man knows something deep down in his heart... when his father told him the legend, it all clicked. Then he saw the girl, and remembered the badge. He didn't have to say a word... as Ben said, it was enough for him just to know.
Wonder if this type of episode was of the kind that Pernell Roberts liked or hated about the show?
@byron thank god somebody noticed that extremely obvious meaning. I mean for the love of god it was literally the last thing said to him before he remembered the badge and found it. Are peoples attention spans really that short
@thomas as I recall he didn’t like the way minorities were treated, the activist that he was, as well as wanted to challenge himself as an actor.
Joe is wandering out in the desert on horseback probably a hundred miles away from home at least and they’re throwing him a surprise party!
It’s a great episode as always but that’s the only wrench in the whole episode. But it’s tv so what the heck shut up and enjoy 👍🏻

Just noticed Little Joe is left handed with his gun. I wouldn't want to be called "little" when I was a grown up adult.
I've got to admit that creepy music tone in the beginning really gives me some spooky vibes for some reason. Almost like u felt it in my soul, idk how to explain it, really, definitely strange.
This episode is very similar to facing our demons, or our ghosts that scare us the most, and little Joe, did what we all should be doing, he faced his demons or ghosts in the abstract of our psyche. I'm well aware of what this is like and do this every day, by acknowledging my demon's and facing them every day, one such demon, the ghost is fear, fear has been in my psyche since I was a child, both of my parents displayed the physical aspects of fear, by threatening, creating contention, physical beating's and enjoying beating on me and justifying those beating were based on assumptions that were not real, only self-created. And so much more. This episode was interestingly shocking, the huge positive is when big ol Hoss and Adam were ready and willing, enough to convince Ben to go look for little joe, and found him, and then the shock of no one but the horse thief and little Joe were there, ha.

I like the small echo you hear when the townsfolk are talking among themselves. Not there when Joe isn't there.
Gee-I remember Sunday night's 50-60 years ago. In my small Newfoundland community, there were about 20 families out of 100 or so with a TV. As a youngster, it was Ed Sullivan and BONANZA to watch at my neighbors house Sunday after Sunday. I recall some story titles from that great western series and Twilight Town is one. Hello from Newfoundland.
