This was a good episode showing two brothers standing together they have been taught understanding and trust they trust each other and with that trust and understanding they came through a situation proving to be right wonderful thank you so much I gave a couple of broken ribs very painful but resting watching Adam i feel much better thank you thank you so much ❤

There are so many angles to this story. The Deputy brothers have a point. The Cartwrights have a point. The judge has a point and Lila has a point. They are all in conflict and yet they are all equally valid. Its a well written episode.
Yep, as usual the dead bad guy has brothers. And as usual they’re out to revenge their brothers death. Usually a guy has been responsible but this time it’s a woman. I guess I’m curious enough to continue watching this movie. 😅😅😅
I really enjoyed Patricia Blair in the final season of "The Rifleman". I read that if the show had gone for a sixth season, it would have been colorized. That would have been fantastic to see the crew, Lucas, Mark, Micah, and the townsfolk all in color. Michael Landon also appeared on the show in three episodes. Loved that show and Bonanza.
Sarah is a good woman to take him back. Not sure I would do the same if my husband ran off with a woman to start another life with. How could she ever trust him again? I would wonder how many woman he is seeing on the side...
Way better than he deserves I'd argue, but then again, she was a woman in the 1860's who was married to a prominent judge, probably didn't relish the idea of having to make her way through the saloon and box social circuit trying to find eligible bachelors.
I thought his wife was too good for him. Her heart and feminine qualities made her all the more attractive. She was also written to be super faithful and loyal--even to the point where I wanted her to leave that judge guy after he came back at the end of the episode, but I try to leave room in my mind for the thought that that's what faithfulness and loyalty compels you to do.
Any character like that whose attitude and personality are self righteous, hypocritical, bible thumping, and toxic are always going to be creepy, especially if they're in a position of power and authority that they tend to use and abuse as they see fit.

The judgs was obviously in the wrong profession. He should have been a minister or paster of a Southern Baptist Church. He thought of himself as being above the morals and convictions of his fellow man. So righteous, and so wrong.
The Cartwrights have got to be the luckiest, ( extreme wealth ) unluckiest ( being shot, shot at, beaten up, robbed, etc.) luckiest ( everything always turns out for them ) family I've ever seen on the screen, heehee.

This episode was aggravating to watch because all Lila had to do was plead self defense because that guy was threatening to kill her. After all, she was in a wild crazy town.

A touch of Film Noir, especially with that jazzy trumpet soundtrack. There are several Bonanza episodes using a trumpet and orchestration--David Rose ambiance. But somewhat curious, since this is a Western. Anyway, good episode.

I wasn't happy with the Cartwright boys in this episode. That girl was trying to seduce him soon after setting up camp.. smh.... "You're a lovely woman Lila and you've used your loveliness for bad reasons" 28:06 sums this episode up

Not too many feminists would appreciate shows like Bonanza in these new times. I watched Bonanza every sunday night growing but i didn't really see how women were portrayed in the story lines. Now i see exactly how stupid these roles were. This episode isn't so bad, but some of them are really degrading for any intelligent women. The writers for this show were really bad and probably misogynistic.
The first thing you said is true: no feminist would like Bonanza, but everything else you said isn't true. You might not notice this, but what you said is feminist influenced and that's a mistake. Feminism taught you to focus only on females and never on the males. You didn't even noticed that not even all males in this show play roles that you think a female should play. I'd say that more men in this show do stupid things, but because you let feminists think for you, you don't even see that. Remember all the times when Sheriff Coffee did something stupid and allowed a prisoner to escape his cell? Remember the episode where a dozen men were searching for leprechauns? Or when Joe fell asleep in a hot air balloon and was screaming when Hoss let the balloon loose? Why aren't you complaining that this show sometimes portrays men as buffoons? I just finished watching the next episode; the whole time the Cartwright boys were getting into all these unbelievable antics for the sake of comedy. The female in that episode was also behaving unrealistically, but that's just because they wanted to tell a story. Furthermore, why aren't you complaining that the vast majority of brutes and villains in this show are males? Because you've been brainwashed by feminists. Sometimes the writers write things that no human being would do. They do it to males sometimes, and they do it to females. Not all men in this show are portrayed as wonderful all the time, not all women in this show are portrayed as wonderful all the time. You can't think like a feminist and only focus on the females, you have to be wiser than that. Personally I think that feminism is disgusting, it handicaps your mind. Please do not think like a feminist. I'm glad you noticed that the females in this episode had some substance, but think back on every female character that was portrayed highly in these shows: notice how they weren't whores or thieves or murderers; notice how they are all ladylike and mostly soft-spoken. That should be enough because good men actually like those qualities. There are plenty of wonderful women in this show. How dare you imply that those women weren't "good enough", or that those qualities do not reveal the quality of their intellect. Instead of thinking like a feminist and saying "These women should be taking charge; they should be sheriffs and business owners and gunfighters and everything", why don't you consider the possibility that feminists are wrong and that women should behave more like the ladies in this show. Consider the possibility that the aggressive obstinate feminist is actually more like a reckless menace than a good woman. Assuming you are a man if you go by the name "Ronald", you, as a man, should be more attracted to the old fashioned female as opposed to the modern bullheaded, uncouth eternally upset female. What if women don't have to be the one's to spout some amazing fact, or solve a mystery, or take down the bad guy to be loved and appreciated. I think the more intelligent women are those who realize that they don't need to act like men to become something good. I think the intelligent women is the one who permits herself to be naturally female. It's actually feminists who degrade females by telling them that exhibiting feminine qualities isn't enough. When you accuse the writers of being "bad" and "probably misogynistic", you're doing exactly what feminists do. They accuse men all day long. The uncouth feminist is never wrong, it's always men who are wrong. Stop thinking like a feminist and be a man. Be a man and shove that feminist garbage out of your mind. Even Margaret Thatcher called feminism poisonous, and you know it's poisonous because of all the problems that feminism is doing to marriage and relationships. I think the show started in 1955. There was a lot of hyper moralism and stock masculinity at the time. And actually women aren’t portrayed that poorly, in general, in the series.
So, one commenter says Bonanza had bad writers that portrayed women in degrading, misogynistic ways that would not be approved of today. And another commenter says, well, the show came out in the 50s, so what do you expect. But I thought the whole point of Bonanza was to tell stories that take place in the late 1800s in the western U.S. territories. I think the writers did their best to come up with plausible stories, while still being entertaining enough to hold a lot of the viewing public's attention to please advertising sponsors. Even in the 1800s, there were as many different kinds of women as there are now, some pious homebodies, some adventurous free-spirits, some sheltered, privileged, educated, illiterate, abused, hardworking, honest, conniving, lazy, creative, logical thinking, and reckless airheads, to name just a few. If I were tasked with coming up with hundreds of entertaining stories based on the real women I have personal knowledge of, I would fail because, although their lives have been filled with work and raising families, enjoying life, and overcoming all sorts of adversities, none of it would qualify as highly entertaining, unless I embellished an awful lot. I don't know how accurate this is, but I seem to remember the average reading level in the 50s was around 6th grade. Maybe that was gauged to be the average consumer's mentality level as well, because, bottom line, these shows were made to sell household products. I'm 70 yrs. old, and remember watching Bonanza in Florida with my mom (a housewife) and my dad (a 14- hour-a-day construction worker), on two old tv sets at the same time: one had only sound, the other had only picture. At 12 years old, I got very wrapped up in the stories, was in love with Adam, mostly; then I kissed my parents goodnight, and went to bed. At 70, I realize I'm more analytical, thinking about viewer demographics, and historical accuracy, and fast-forwarding past some of the predictable scenes of cruelty and violence; I enjoy the humorous episodes more. Some episodes are more hokey, lame, and unrealistic than others, but they still give me a chance to imagine what life might have been like for my great-great grandparents. And for that, I'm very grateful for the people who've made these available to enjoy after all these years, on TH-cam!

All the men gambling, fighting and drinking in the salons with the salon girls surely helped to lead many men away from their families and even loose everything. If you're going to be mad at anyone, be mad at the writers. The characters only do what the writers tell them to do.
Taken, not took ! The boys wanted her to have a FAIR trial....at Virginia City.... It would probably be considered a case of self defence...in which case, she would do time, but not be hung .
Not too many feminists would appreciate shows like Bonanza in these new times. I watched Bonanza every sunday night growing but i didn't really see how women were portrayed in the story lines. Now i see exactly how stupid these roles were. This episode isn't so bad, but some of them are really degrading for any intelligent women. The writers for this show were really bad and probably misogynistic.
The first thing you said is true: no feminist would like Bonanza, but everything else you said isn't true. You might not notice this, but what you said is feminist influenced and that's a mistake. Feminism taught you to focus only on females and never on the males. You didn't even noticed that not even all males in this show play roles that you think a female should play. I'd say that more men in this show do stupid things, but because you let feminists think for you, you don't even see that. Remember all the times when Sheriff Coffee did something stupid and allowed a prisoner to escape his cell? Remember the episode where a dozen men were searching for leprechauns? Or when Joe fell asleep in a hot air balloon and was screaming when Hoss let the balloon loose? Why aren't you complaining that this show sometimes portrays men as buffoons? I just finished watching the next episode; the whole time the Cartwright boys were getting into all these unbelievable antics for the sake of comedy. The female in that episode was also behaving unrealistically, but that's just because they wanted to tell a story. Furthermore, why aren't you complaining that the vast majority of brutes and villains in this show are males? Because you've been brainwashed by feminists. Sometimes the writers write things that no human being would do. They do it to males sometimes, and they do it to females. Not all men in this show are portrayed as wonderful all the time, not all women in this show are portrayed as wonderful all the time. You can't think like a feminist and only focus on the females, you have to be wiser than that. Personally I think that feminism is disgusting, it handicaps your mind. Please do not think like a feminist. I'm glad you noticed that the females in this episode had some substance, but think back on every female character that was portrayed highly in these shows: notice how they weren't whores or thieves or murderers; notice how they are all ladylike and mostly soft-spoken. That should be enough because good men actually like those qualities. There are plenty of wonderful women in this show. How dare you imply that those women weren't "good enough", or that those qualities do not reveal the quality of their intellect. Instead of thinking like a feminist and saying "These women should be taking charge; they should be sheriffs and business owners and gunfighters and everything", why don't you consider the possibility that feminists are wrong and that women should behave more like the ladies in this show. Consider the possibility that the aggressive obstinate feminist is actually more like a reckless menace than a good woman. Assuming you are a man if you go by the name "Ronald", you, as a man, should be more attracted to the old fashioned female as opposed to the modern bullheaded, uncouth eternally upset female. What if women don't have to be the one's to spout some amazing fact, or solve a mystery, or take down the bad guy to be loved and appreciated. I think the more intelligent women are those who realize that they don't need to act like men to become something good. I think the intelligent women is the one who permits herself to be naturally female. It's actually feminists who degrade females by telling them that exhibiting feminine qualities isn't enough.
When you accuse the writers of being "bad" and "probably misogynistic", you're doing exactly what feminists do. They accuse men all day long. The uncouth feminist is never wrong, it's always men who are wrong. Stop thinking like a feminist and be a man. Be a man and shove that feminist garbage out of your mind. Even Margaret Thatcher called feminism poisonous, and you know it's poisonous because of all the problems that feminism is doing to marriage and relationships. It turns women into these bitter monsters. Get that feminist garbage out of your mind. Be a man and call feminists out for the misguided individuals that they are.
I think the show started in 1955. There was a lot of hyper moralism and stock masculinity at the time. And actually women aren’t portrayed that poorly, in general, in the series.
So, one commenter says Bonanza had bad writers that portrayed women in degrading, misogynistic ways that would not be approved of today. And another commenter says, well, the show came out in the 50s, so what do you expect. But I thought the whole point of Bonanza was to tell stories that take place in the late 1800s in the western U.S. territories. I think the writers did their best to come up with plausible stories, while still being entertaining enough to hold a lot of the viewing public's attention to please advertising sponsors.
Even in the 1800s, there were as many different kinds of women as there are now, some pious homebodies, some adventurous free-spirits, some sheltered, privileged, educated, illiterate, abused, hardworking, honest, conniving, lazy, creative, logical thinking, and reckless airheads, to name just a few. If I were tasked with coming up with hundreds of entertaining stories based on the real women I have personal knowledge of, I would fail because, although their lives have been filled with work and raising families, enjoying life, and overcoming all sorts of adversities, none of it would qualify as highly entertaining, unless I embellished an awful lot.
I don't know how accurate this is, but I seem to remember the average reading level in the 50s was around 6th grade. Maybe that was gauged to be the average consumer's mentality level as well, because, bottom line, these shows were made to sell household products.
I'm 70 yrs. old, and remember watching Bonanza in Florida with my mom (a housewife) and my dad (a 14- hour-a-day construction worker), on two old tv sets at the same time: one had only sound, the other had only picture. At 12 years old, I got very wrapped up in the stories, was in love with Adam, mostly; then I kissed my parents goodnight, and went to bed. At 70, I realize I'm more analytical, thinking about viewer demographics, and historical accuracy, and fast-forwarding past some of the predictable scenes of cruelty and violence; I enjoy the humorous episodes more. Some episodes are more hokey, lame, and unrealistic than others, but they still give me a chance to imagine what life might have been like for my great-great grandparents. And for that, I'm very grateful for the people who've made these available to enjoy after all these years, on TH-cam!

@@barneyohara7804 Everyone is going on about how great this show is. I've been watching quite a few and it is astonishing how much sin this show actually promotes. All the men gambling, fighting and drinking in the salons with the salon girls surely helped to lead many men away from their families and even loose everything. All the violence, murder, conniving, lust this program promotes......you are so right - only Jesus can fix this mess that the world is in - that programs like this helped to promote.

@@CanadianVacations I understand what you mean, but I try to consider the possibility that they're being realistic. I wouldn't say that this show outright promotes all the things you listed. They definitely make light of brawls and drinking; ill agree with you there, but you can't say that this show "promotes" murder. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask you to think twice about that. It's the villains who murder. The CWs kill only to save someone or in self defense; and there have been plenty of episodes when they respond appropriately to murder. They express disgust over it.
