I really felt for Siri at the beginning of this. I was constantly like "Poor Siri!" She got tossed into a marriage and she at this point was barely more than a child and certainly mostly viewed the world as one with a carefree adventurous spirit and then is thrust into a situation where she has to be married to what she basically initially regarded as some kind of undead monster that has been vilified her entire life. And the days she spent in pain on the floor kneeling terrified in agony was heart wrenching. Then she began to seize control of the situation against all odds and realized she was more like her older sister than she realized in that she was strong too just in her own way. Vivenna wrestling with identity crisis and now feeling a lack of purpose now that her task has been wrested from her was epic too. She began to lose some of her harder beliefs and rigid control as her sister Siri in tandem was gaining some of these in her own way. So awesome. My favorite cosmere book by far.
YESSS!! Warbreaker was so good and such an under rated book. Lightsong chapters were probably some of my favorite to read. Excellent review, I hope it encourages more people to pick it up!

My biggest complaint about this book is that it feels about 100 pages too short. I needed more at the end of this book! Thank the storms we have the stormlight archive

My grandma made the same complaint and I agree. I wound not doubt if the publisher said "good book, make it shorter" so he had to wrap it up faster than he wanted.
I can understand wanting more of a climax in an action sense, but the story itself isn't about war/battle it's about stopping a war. So when the ending happens and the characters are just laying back watching the battle unfold from afar I thought that literally is the whole book summarised. But definitely deserves a sequel!

I read Warbreaker without knowing a single thing about the story, I was expecting it to be a by the book hero's journey fantasy novel similar to mistborn or stormlight archive. To my surprise though it is much more akin to a folk tale or Greek myth. It has a timeless story, and amazing characters. Nightblood seems to be a homage to Stormbringer from Elric of Melnibone, so there's some classic swords and sorcery thrown in as well. Warbreaker for me is tied with Way of Kings for Sanderson's best book for completely different reasons. I popped big when characters from Warbreaker appeared in Stormlight.
Just found your channel today and have been binge watching the herald videos, but I had to see what you thought of Warbreaker. So glad you enjoyed it! It has been a favorite of mine for years. I always recommend it to people trying to get started with Brandon Sandersion...or Mistborn depending on the person. You are doing a terrific job with these recaps and the other in depth videos. Warbreaker is the most underrated book Brandon Sanderson has ever written! Like this book to me was damn near perfect. Many people brush this book off and may skip this read altogether. I feel this is a MUST READ before you read the other series he has written. Amazing book and story!

I agree so much with your choice of highlights - especially your reasons of discussion of religion, and Lightsong! I feel like his relationship with his high priests is particularly amazing, as is the concept that all the good Returned die, and only the selfish ones remain. Question, have you yet read Sanderson's Reckoners series? It's not cosmere, but I'm curious.

It is not really urgently necessary if u have nit read it yed and already read oathbringer then you can go on and ROW and later read warbreaker.. i mean if you are reading SA and not read other books of the cosmere then you are totalky missing out... SA is like the series that brings them all togather ..
Hey man! I have just discovered your channel and I love it! I just wanted to provide clarification about the breaths of the returned. When they Return, they get only one breath, called "Divine breath". Although being only one, the breath is equivalent to 5000 normal breaths in power, bringing them to the 5th heightening. In order to survive, the Returned need one additional breath per week, it can come from any source (not necessarily children). Otherwise, on spot! And I really like your channel 😄😄😄

Having now read Dawnshard and the preview chapters for Rhythm of War, I'd say Warbreaker is pretty quickly getting into the territory where it is essential for Stormlight
I kind off had a different experience from you, when I was reading and when I finished it I had complaints about some things, but after a while, I just began to roll it over and over in my head and I was just amazed at how wrong I was and how great everything was.

i loved the book and the relationship between siri and the king was my favorite aspect, the only thing i wish Brandon Sanderson explored a little bit more was the life of Siri and Susebron in the prologue, as much as i like Vivenna for her to get all the spotlight at the end was a bit disappointing, but all in all it was an excellent read
Just a small detail, which I don't know if someone else pointed in the comments. The Returned (i.e., Gods) don't have 5000 breaths, they have a single divine breath, which enhances their perception much more than a regular (human) breath. Each week their bodies consume a breath to keep "alive" and if they don't have an extra breath they will consume their divine breath and hence die. They hence need one extra breath each week to be kept alive, which can come from any human, although Lightsong comments that they usually pick children to give such a breath to the Gods. This said, your videos are really cool, keep making them. thanks.
I can't wait for Brandon to return to this world, and after reading the unpublished Sixth of Dusk story I can't wait to see how Awakeners will interact with other invested characters during the "space age" of the Cosmere. Well I guess it's actually already happened....but that would be a HUGE spoiler so I'll say no more. XD Definitely check this out, it's a good place to start for the Cosmere books. It is a self contained story and you don't need to know anything about the other novels or even that the Cosmere is a thing. Since I'm almost caught up with every Cosmere book I am looking at more stuff like theories and other things that would have been spoilers a few months ago and I was surprised to learn that Warbreaker is actually set _after_ Mistborn era 1 in the Cosmere timeline. I was thinking since I read WB that it was way closer to Dragonsteel than the rest but it's after that and Whitec Sands as well. Man the Cosmere is so epically huge, it gets more interesting with every new thing I learn. Every fan of fantasy should get to know these worlds and stories, it's going to get insane during the next 10-15 years. XD
Alright, fine, you’ve convinced me. I’ll read Warbreaker. I didn’t love Elantris and was worried about another Sanderson stand-alone novel, but this one sounds really good and I do really want the connections with Stormlight!
So I've read the way of kings and I didn't really like it but I'm getting Brandon Sanderson another shot and I bought warbreaker on audiobook with a full cast and sound effects I usually read books but I'm giving audiobooks a try I'm really hoping that I liked this book sounds like it's going to be a very immersive world and possibly I will understand the way of Kings a lot more it didn't possibly like it blower and get back into the cosmere universe lifelong fantasy fan and Brandon Sanderson is one of the guys that I haven't read a lot of awesome review I'm going to be checking out more your videos Man you make me really surprised and excited to listen to this book
Brandon Sanderson is definetly an author that doesn't have to be sold to me, but I've always gone past warbreaker and mistborn, i guess this is a good moment to get into the full cosmere!
I have a friend who was going to head to Mistborn after the Stormlight Archive. I told her to head to Warbreaker instead, not because it's necessarily better but just because Stormlight will become so much more rewarding
I would describe the magic system as specialized AI via mystical means. In order to create your AI designed to do a single task very well you need four things: Object A to act as potential AI to be (human shaped works better), Object B which has to be vividly colored to act as fuel, Breath to facilitate the transfer of energy and finally the ability to express an explicit imagining of the task in very few words. I personally just have one major problem with the system in question and that is that color is not an intrinsic property of an object, rather what is perceived when light is reflected from an object. In that way the drab grey that everything becomes is still technically a color and also how does the color change without change to texture? It doesn't truly make sense. Out of all of Sandersons magic systems, I like this one the least. The book itself I really like though because the characters are good and the story is really good too. Lightsong is the guy I want to invite to all my dinner parties!
Hmm when you put it like that I totally understand your point! I suppose without getting too deep into the scientific mechanics of Awakening etc I was able to just enjoy the fantastical nature of it. I think the way i tried to make sense of the color is just simply, a living being has a color or "glow" about them and upon death people fade and appear pale or ashen. Because of awakening being easier to do on human shaped objects you would be putting color back into their existence. I know thats rather rudimentary lol but thats just me lol edit: now thinking about it i guess that wouldnt explain the lifeless sense they still appear drab. but like you said i guess thats still a color. idk

Yes I felt the exact same way! It's definitely my favourite non-stormlight book from Sanderson. The cross over scenes in the SLA broke my mind dude.
The fact that the first instance of Awakening that we see is the most complex has never stopped being cool to me.

Elantris is his first published novel, so he himself tells people to be kind to baby author Brandon when they read it lol

Yeah I see that from your videos lol. I know enough about it and the characters are in the stormlight archive as azure and vasher is a ardent. Plus night blood. Idk I could never bring myself to get past the second chapter. I have read all the other books till my eyes bled though.
I was going to read mistborn era 2 first but after rhythm of war and dawnshard I'm so torn about what to read in the cosmere
Warbreaker has the most direct connections to Stormlight and it’s a standalone so I say start there :)
