  • Welcome to Top 10 Things You Might Have Missed In Rhythm Of War by Brandon Sanderson!
    SPOILERS FOR MANY BRANDON'S SANDERSON BOOKS SUCH AS MISTBORN, WARBREAKER, AND OTHER COSMERE SERIES. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
    In this video, I showcase a selection of important details that you might have overlooked in your reading of the latest Stormlight Archive novel. Not only do I discuss these topics but I speculate about their broader implications in the Cosmere and my theories about Book 5 in the series. I draw on information from all the books in the Cosmere so expect some deep lore speculation.
    Rhythm of War is the fourth novel in the Stormlight Archive. This series follows the human forces on the planet Roshar, a world of intense storms, bizarre plant life, and massive crustation creatures. Now embroiled in a war with the native Listeners, a people who were once forced into menial labor by the humans, the heroes Kaladin, Shallan, Dalinar, and many others strive to find a place in this conflict while upholding the ideals and magical powers of the Knights Radiant. But when fighting a god named Odium, their options are limited.
    Thank you to the wonderful artists who gave permission for me to share their work to enhance the series here on Letters From The Cosmere! please check out their personal accounts for more fantastic art!

    Great catch with the sleepless! I never noticed that, nor have I seen it on the subreddits.
    #2 The aluminium alloy weapons were confirmed in the book by Navani in chapter 19, although we don't know their origin, Raboniel and other fused spoke of Aluminium ("Ralkalest" in their language), several times AND mentioned that there was once a physical aluminium barrier in the ground around Urithiru that prevented the Fused that can sink into the ground from entering, this implies that Aluminium has been known about for a long time. Given that singers could bond shardblades, I expect that either the fused or their servants could have used soulcasters, so would have been able to make it in the past as well (we know Soulcasters can make Aluminium despite its properties given that Shallan had a necklace made of soulcast aluminium her father had bought for her).
    #4 Kelsier is trapped not due to being a mistborn, but due to being so heavily invested by the Well of Ascension (or potentially due to having held Preservation briefly). As he's a cognitive shadow, he's essentially a spren (but made of Preservation's Investiture, not Honor or Cultivation like Rosharan Spren) shaped like a human soul at this point. Spren are trapped in the system from which they came, so it makes sense that Kelsier would be too.
    #5 The blade is confirmed to be made of Raysium (not braizium), which is Rayse (Odium)'s godmetal. Raboniel confirms this in Chapter 84. Brandon I believe has also confirmed this.
    #8 I consider nightblood being anti-investiture somewhat unlikely. The issue is that anti-investiture is also destroyed when reacting with the appropriate investiture, so nightblood should only have the ability to destroy about 1000 breaths worth of investiture. However, Nightblood seems to getting stronger over time, not weaker (In WOB /events/4/#e5170, Brandon confirmed that nightblood is one of the most highly invested non-shard entities in the cosmere).

    • @asterysmgaming9912
      @asterysmgaming9912 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The function of the metal makes me think that Odium is actually Jealousy/Envy, rather than emotion. Someone with that aspect would naturally expand the scope of their domain, which would explain why he's always saying he's all emotion. From a "godly aspect" point of view, Emotion doesn't fit with the other aspects to me. Honor/Preservation/Ruin/Autonomy/etc. Jealousy would fit well as it's a common tenet of religion for gods to be jealous as a righteous attribute.
      If he's jealousy/envy, his metal being a medium of transference for investiture makes sense to me.

    Brandon’s ability to connect and interweave characters, investiture/magic systems, and plots from his cosmere novels is prodigious. And it’s fun to dig beneath the surface plots in the various cosmere novels for clues about the more subtle plots, connections, and timelines. That said, with Kelsier, I hope we’ll eventually learn that his apparent transformation into a villain of sorts (Thaidakar) is just that - apparent - and that there’s more to his machinations as leader of the Ghostbloods than self-interest. Of course, fantasy novels by definition require suspension of disbelief. That doesn’t, however, or at any rate shouldn’t, require inconsistency. In The Final Empire Kelsier, once an arrogant, amoral, self-serving thief who thought of no one but himself, has become, through his suffering in the Pits, a different person. He snaps. He’s *genuinely* changed by the experience, and the novel hammers this point over and over - he comes to understand the nature and value of trust and friendship (as he teaches Vin ad nauseaum), love (of Mare, e.g., which persists for him regardless of whether she betrayed him), and self-sacrifice in the service of values and for a cause that transcends his own, albeit still outsized, ego. For Christ’s sake, no pun intended, in The Final Empire, Brandon the Mormon has Kelsier literally sacrifice his life at the end of the novel (and “reappear” via kandra) to help bring down the Lord Ruler and end the oppression of millions. Now we’re to believe that he’s reverted to the pre-Pits of Hathsin character he’d once been? - indeed, seemingly worse - immoral rather than just amoral. Perhaps - and to my mind, it’d be much more coherent - Kelsier’s/Thaidakar’s agenda is not the self-serving one it currently appears to be.

      I'm reading final empire again rn and I was thinking the same thing, but u gotta remember our main bridge between kelsier then and kelsier now is secret history, where he literally gave up living with mare again to accomplish his goals, but you're right, because of his character arc it's hard to say what his motives are other than finding a way to not be trapped in scadrials cognitive realm

    • @rbkskillz
      @rbkskillz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ginganinja9935 he gave up "the unknown beyond" not exactly a sure thing he would be with mare again. Also... He gave it up so that he could Survive. He is a survivor, down to his essence. Also remember that cognitive shadows are not truly a person's soul, but a memory of that person, imprinted onto the investiture that the person held when they died. The strongest memory of Kelsier was his will to survive.

    I will note that the power of investiture is not actually in the metals even on skadrial. The metals simply are a catalyst for the internal investiture they have inside them. Due to this, I theorize that the different metals would possibly interact with more kinds of investiture than just stormlight and allomancy.

    In The Way of Kings, i thought of Adolin as a little bratty, a little brash, and a little quick on the trigger (I think you’re suppose to).

    Raboniel tells navani that the fused weapons are made of aluminum, and the knives, she says, are made of Raysium (the solid investiture of odium). This Raysium appears to be capable of conducting investiture, though I don't think we know what the second metal used is (the one that makes it conduct in a certain direction)
    The part about perfect pitch is a really good one, perfect pitch is probably exactly what one needs to easily convert investiture!

      @@lettersfromthecosmere1918 Kelsier heard rhythms when he was arriving at the Well (AU, hardcover pg 213-214)
      Ruin's power was also distributed via pulses/rhythms (AU pg 226)
      The big one with relevance to RoW and reveals that all Shards have an associated tone or rhythm was this:
      "Fuzz (Preservation) was the infinity of a note held perfectly, never wavering." (AU pg 229)
      It doesn't say that he heard a note or tone per-se, but it does imply that he did.
      My personal theory regarding this is that:
      This, combined with what we know about Pure Tones/Rhythms of the Cosmere, shows us that every shard has these properties. People theorize that Hoid's end-goal is rebuilding or recreating Adonalsium. The actual method there might have something to do with combining all these tones into some sort of magical symphony played near Investitures from all 16 of the shards. Again, that's only a theory of mine.

      Anyone who isn't invested (so 99% of rosharian humans, possibly even dull parshendi) can easily leave the system. We also see that many people can and do leave their systems who are invested. Beyond the obvious world hoppers we have seen. Only the heavily invested like cognitive shadows, possibly slivers, and maybe the most powerful like Mistborn or radiants would be truly locked down. But again, people like Hoid and Vasher make it clear that travel beyond system even when invested is possible.

    I hadn't picked up on #3, but it leads credence to a theory of mine. We know that aluminum has universal anti-investiture properties, but what about duralumin? Does duralumin have universal investiture enhancement properties? Because if it does...HOO boy! Nevani's gonna have a field day when she discovers it! We could very well start the next phase of Stormlight with Roshar's space age with what that woman could do.
    Big Spoilers. Now this video is a year old at this point, but we do know now from The Lost Metal that Kelsior is INDEED the leader of the Ghost Bloods. We also know now that each individual member is free to pursue whatever goal they wish, but that the main purpose of the organization is to protect Skaadriel. As for whether or not Kelsior is going to end up as a villain or hero...well, that's gonna depend on who's side of the inevitable intergalactic war you're on. We also know that Harmony...might not be as "harmonious" as we thought. The Big Three in the Cosmere are gonna be Odium, Autonomy, and Harmony, assuming he doesn't devolve back into full Ruin. With the way things are looking, I honestly don't see a "good" option.
    Also between Vasher and Hoid, we know you can have multiple forms of magic and power them with different forms of investiture. THAT is gonna be interesting, especially if Mraise completes his objective of figuring out how to get Stormlight off of Roshar.
