- Starting My Lawn Care Equipment After 5 Months With No Stabilizer. Lawn care equipment can be hard to properly store without running into problems in the spring. We only run ethanol-free fuel in our small engine repair and lawn care business. Doing so prevents our machines from not starting when the season comes. The magic is alkylate fuel from Stihl, Aspen, etc in all four strokes. You don’t have to run your machine dry before winter and it will start much easier after long periods of being stored.
Oil : as mentioned above, or saber or interceptor.
Four strokes 10w30 small engine, XL boosted. Amsoil. :
OLD MAN here from Eliminator Performance Fill. At our shop we only use ethanol free fuel and K100S+ stabilizer mixed at 2.5 ozs. of K100S+ to 10 gallons of fuel for one year storage. Never have an issue firing up equipment after sitting for 6 months on first or second pull and we never run our equipment out of fuel before storage. Interesting that we just repurchased a fuel container we sold to a customer with 89 Octane ethanol free fuel and K100S+ from May 2018 (customer had health issues and never used all the fuel since he hired a company to take care of his property). We will shortly be visually checking the difference between new and 3 year old fuel, then seeing if it will fire up a mower that runs on fresh fuel then run out of fuel and try with the 3 year old fuel. My guess is it has a 50% chance of running.

I am a gardener more than 20 years. My storing method for the winter: on the 4 stroke engines I close up the gas valve and starts the engine, leave it to run out from gas. I put a stabilizer in the tank as recommended. The machines are stored in my closed trailer all winter. In the spring I open up the valve , leave it for a couple of minutes the gravity fill up the carburetor (smaller machine), and if it is not starts after 4-5 pulling I remove the air filter and spraying some starter spray (even break cleaner is working). After one or two pull starting up. The bigger mowers usually starts after a couple of seconds using the starter motor.
The 2 stroke engines: I pouring out the gas from the tank and after starts the engine and wait to run out of fuel. I collect the mixed gas in the usual gas container and put in some stabilizer too. Spring time just give the container some shake and filling up the machines gas tank, doing the usual starting process and after a couple of pull all of them starting.
I have to use ethanol mixed gas because in Toronto - at least where I live - we do not have ethanol free gas. But with this methods the winter storage is no problem.
I have battery operated trimmers, hedge trimmer too, these tools I bring it in to the basement to keep it frost and moist free. I remove the batteries and fully charge before store in room temperature. I n the spring time just start to use them, DO NOT CHARGE the batteries, just let it run down the first time. Expect a bit shorter working time, but it is healthier for the batteries. After charging you will restore the working time as you put it to "sleep" them.
hey fill. i’m a master tech at my city’s local small engine shop. we recommend running all outdoor power equipment completely empty before storing for longer than 3 months. ethanol free fuel still has a shelf life. 2 strokes you can dump whatever you can out then start and hold at wide open throttle until it dies then prime and try to start again and then check tank. if some residual is in the tank used compressed air to blow it out. 4 strokes you can get some sort of siphon or turkey baster to suck what you can out the tank then start and let it run until it dies. sometimes the pick ups aren’t directly at the bottom of the tank so shake the machine around a little and try starting again. love your content!
For the last ten years or so I have used regular pump gas, I never do anything special to 'winterize' my equipment, though I do use Sta-Bil gas stabilizer. I have twelve 5 gallon cans that I keep full and always rotate. Many times I have two year old gas that I use and I never have any issues. Sometimes the gas is newer if I mow a lot, as the cans get rotated faster. I'm sold on Sta-Bil.
Hey Fill really enjoyed the video. 2 things. 1. why do you leave plastic gas tanks full? 2. Have you ever heard of cold seizing an engine? Basically I watched a video a long time ago about how with two stroke engines especially you need to let them warm up slowly so that the whole engine warms up consistently together. Supposedly if you fire it up and rev it up to much, the rings and can warm up faster than everything else and expand and seize the engine up. Have you ever heard of that? I’ve never experienced it or seen it happen but o suppose the logic made sense.
Never heard of cold siezing and I never have issues with leaving fuelnin plastic tanks
I have seen a video from Steve’s small engine saloon on 2 strokes that had scored pistons because people start them and just rev them up to full immediately. He said chainsaws are the worst because they rev higher than most other equipment. Even giving your machine 30 seconds to 1 minute of warm up would be huge for the life of the engine.
On the topic of gas, I always use ethanol free fuel in my equipment and have not had a carb issue since I switched from standard 87 fuel. And of course the Stihl synthetic oil

I always use ethanol fuel and all my equipment including my motorcycle for winter storage I do use stable just to make the gas a little better when you try to start it I feel. Hope my hustler flipup starts as good as yours did. First year starting it after winter storage. Didn't have it last winter.

I find push mowers are naturally hard to start at colder temps., maybe because the jets are set so lean. Interesting video !
Might have something to do with the oil but who knows 🤔🤷
I believe you need to add some sea foam to those push mowers,

My units start right up non ethanol gas and sea foam
You need to shake your two stroke's before you pull to start them to mix up the oil in the gas. If not you could clog up your carburetor with oil.

The old dude that has taken care of my mower for years told me to run mid-grade fuel in my mower, snowblower,etc. And I have done it for 30 to 40 years now and have had little problems, change the plug, and the fuel filter(every 2 to 3yrs) and there we are. If things took more then 5 pulls( which they don't) I would be compelled to get rid of them. Run them dry at the end of the season, live it till time to use it again, it works for me , 30 to 40 years, I've bought 1 lawn mower and 1 snow blower and still use them. I'm not a miser, I just try to take care of my stuff. By the way, thanks for showing your machine, it means a lot, you know i love seeing you whip your big ole machine around with such elegant decisive manor, that wrist action, then the pulse raises, and the you hit the throttle revving hyer and hyer till you peeked your engine and you chocked it out and what fun that was. Love the sweet trail ends of your backing out of the garage, just makes me quiver,( derewling). Bye for now, hope to see more of you soon. Lol 🥮

Interesting vid. I typically just put some stabil and fuel in mine and run em for a few min then they’re good to go. But being as I’m in DFW my off-season isn’t terribly long.
I put Stabil and Marvel Mystery Oil in each 5 gallon gas can each time I purchase gasoline. I never have any problems with my Stihl equipment. NEVER USE ETHANOL in small engines or any lawnmower!
Starter fluid for carbs always works for me
Be careful with starting fluid. I'd use carb cleaner instead
Hello I love your set up really nice I do suggest getting a John Deere 100 series riding mower I have heard it has a really nice engine
You also need to let it warm up before you run it full throttle. If you keep doing that it might ruin Piston rings in two stroke and bearing's in your lawn mower.
I drain everything that is not used during that season and run it till it's out of fuel. Never steered me wrong

I’m my dealing with echo red max sthl in my opinion echo carburetors are better far as sitting all winter and starting them up there better that’s why I’m just turning echo there just work horses start up and just get to it no babing just start and go!

Hey Fill I know this is late I'm just now seeing this I've never ever used stabilize fuel stabilizer I always use high octane fuel in all my stuff I do lawn care with my dad & I noticed he buys cheap 85 octane fuel normally I'll buy no less than 93 octane for everything...

it took 13 pulls to start when it was running
I've had one MTD self propelled and I now have an MTD Mini Rider 60cm cutting width. With both mowers they started first pull when the engines were completely cold but after running them if you tried to start them with hot or warm engines they took forever (many pulls) to start. Is this something that is found with MTD's? What could be causing this?
should of let the float bowl fill up with fuel after turning on the gas.

I have a Kawasaki FB460V 12.5hp on a John Deere 165 that will start no matter how cold it is. The Kawasaki air cooled engines are pretty tough and tend to be quite dependable. How do you like your Hustler mower?

I love my hustler mower. The only issue I have with it is the bagger tube is too thin on the end by the deck which causes the clumps of grass to clog easy
@@fillslawncare I wonder if you treated the tube with WD-40 if that wouldn’t help prevent the clogging issues.
When my sister purchased her new Toro 22i inch Recycler, I made the suggestion about the WD-40 and we give the brand new Toro a good heavy coating underneath before the mower was ever used.
The grass clippings wash away easily with just the pressure from a water hose. I am probably going to treat the mower deck again as well as changing the blade and engine oil - No, I don’t like the idea of never changing the oil.
Besides, My oil extraction pump usually makes quick work of the old engine oil.
@@fillslawncare Those engines would have started up with no problem if you were not making your video - It kind of falls into the “Murphy’s Law” parameters. {LOL}.
