That 400 meter world record Reynolds broke was set in Mexico City 20 years prior. That gave Lee Evans a huge advantage due to the high altitude. Reynolds was the only runner within those 20 years to come even close to it. Running in the low 44's and then finally running a 43.93 at the U.S. Trials a month prior. It was expected that he would break it at the Olympics along with taking the gold medal, but he ended up losing to the same man that he ran away from in this race. Nevertheless, this was a shocking run. Track performances like this don't happen very often.

+Melle Mel (Melanin Male) Reynold's incident is THE poster case of administrative 'hard-headedness'! He proved his innocence, and that the testers botched the exam. The way the IAAF acted, it looked like it was afraid that admission to messing the exam up would open up a floodgate of litigation. They were afraid of being sued like crazy, instead of getting the test right! So, they took a hard line stance, and made threats to Reynolds, his competitors and USATF! Fun facts:
    1) This still stands as the third fastest time in history, nearly 30 years on. Michael Johnson (43.18) and Wayde Van Niekerk (43.03) have only run faster than this time, only once each.
    2) The previous record of 43.86 lasted for 20 years, having been set at altitude in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Reynolds came close in the US olympic trials with 43.93
    3) Despite this staggering performance, Steve Lewis (who finished behind Reynolds in this race) would defeat Reynolds in the Olympic final that year in the still-standing World Junior Record of 43.87 (Reynolds second in 43.93, the same time he'd run in the trials)
    4) Reynolds would never run under 44 again until 8 years later, in the 1996 Olympic Trials (43.91, his second-fastest time)
    5) This is the largest improvement to the world record in the 400m as well as the only record set with negative splits (21.9-21.4)

Man, talk about a contrast in brilliant versus foolish tactics. Egbunike ran an absolutely terrible race. Amazing speed at the start but you could see him really start to lose it around 250 meters. I’m always wary of those runners who go out that hard in the first half of the race. You cannot maintain that kind of pace around the track. You could see he’d used it all up. Just no more explosion left. Then he got absolutely clobbered in the last 100 and ended up almost last. But Reynolds, man. He was so composed all the way through but didn't look like he kicked in the highest gear until about 275m. Ran that top bend so smartly and that finish. Wow. He was absolutely blazing.

Great post - I can't believe it's 23 years since Ron died. I know we have some great sprinters around now - but they were pretty advanced in terms of times back in the 80's. It took 11 years to be lowered to 43.18 by another track great. Where will it go to next? Perhaps 42.99 - but it would need the new Usain Bolt of 400m running to do it. Breaking the 43 second barrier would be amazing and I hope I live to see it. 15 years is a long time for a record to stand.

Yea because if you read the report about his suspension and failed test they botched his samples and tried to cover it up which is why he got $27 million in court from them. And they suspended him in his prime/ he was injury prone all during his career so you can hardly blame him for never getting back down there

Got my suspicions about this run.He failed a test a few years later and battled the IAAF in court. Was a 44.2, 44.3 man when he came back, still world class, but not 43.29.

Butch ran 43.91 as late as 1996, so your statement is not factual.

@FranchiseIndustries Sir: For some time now, I have believed that Jeremy Wariner is an athlete who has excellent potential as an 800 metres runner. However, I think that he will probably decide to continue specialising in the 400 metres for the remaining years of his career in international track and field athletics Mr Wariner is now 27 years of age ... and is perhaps getting a little too old to take up a new event from scratch, as it were.
I think that there is a strong possibility

Does anyone know the name of the bearded guy who appears in a white cap at 2:53s during this video? Is it Willie Banks or Larry Myricks? I would really appreciate this info since my 2 small kids enjoy seeing this video and are curious to know the name of this guy with Reynolds? :)

Apparently that guy is his brother. This quote from an article about the race: "In the post-race mob scene, Reynolds was breathless and confused - uncertain what he had done. 'My brother rushed up to hug me and he told me I did it [erased Evans' 43.86 WR with his 43.29 clocking]. I just wanted to hit the ground. I was exhausted."'
