If you’ve got the space, make a variety! Sometimes you want a game with more literally defined space, and sometimes you don’t. UDT 2.0 would be great for a lot of FATE games or other RPGs where combat is a little more abstracted, or a scenario like the Minotaurs Maze from a couple videos back in this series. I just did a scene with my kids where they chased a pig through the woods, and a flocked UDT 2.0 would have been perfect!
In other games, the strategy is all about positioning. I’ve got a D&D encounter that is an ambush by a ranger and a rogue assassin, both on horseback armed with long bows. I’ll probably play it on a 4’X4’ game board, and it will have a more war-gamey feel.

Another possible tip for UDT: (as you mention on this video) I bought a very thick poster board and covered it with a slow curing epoxy paste and textured it very quickly with a roller from greenstuffworld when firm. Then I used a ruler to cut a grid into the firm paste. To paint it, I just used a dark spray primer and drybrushed some stone colors on to it. And voilà. I like the harder surface that cured epoxy offers.
    Congrats on 100 videos!

Dan, Ive been running games since 2nd ed (I'm 49) and I have to tell you that your advice and channel are thee best out there. I've never watched the same youtube videos so many times, ive taken notes on your ideas and after running a 15 month Curse of Strahd campaign RAW, the scalability in this version is out of control! I'm starting a sea faring/pirate themed game in a few weeks (Oct 2019) and will be using your ideas for, what I'm telling my players is a "middle/dark ages" version of the Forgotten Realms; a "prequel" of what your official D&D Beyond 1st level will become. Thanks so much for your efforts and advice. Sam.

I added a round table top from Home Depot to my lazy Susan, so the surface area is about 2x the size of your board. The round room is going to work out great as it will have an outside and an inside! I have made 6 maps so far, forest, desert, air/water, cobblestone, underground, underdark. Thanks for the great ideas.

For texture, just for fun, I tried one of those "sea anemone" dryer balls, just using my palm to roll it around in concentric circles all over the board... worked awesome. The trick is to only use minimal pressure for light texturing (like weathered stone), or a heavy hand for truly pock-marked and pitted texture (like the floor of a Tinker Gnome's Laboratory.)
The more you repeat-roll over the surface area, the more random, and better the texture. You can sparsely texture for light weathering, or increase the density of the pitting marks as you like.
Experiment, and have some fun. For my first go, I made a really awesome heavily weathered stone texture on my monolith pieces for a Stonehenge layout. I made it look like they were chipped out of living rock using flint tools. My players thought I had spent a lot of time knifing each tool mark. The truth was really depressing. ;oP

This dungeon terrain is perfect for anyone using your custom rules, and I would urge anyone using theater-of-the-mind to move up to this scenery. For those of you who can't get the citadel agrax earth shade, you can make the black wash, double the water, add 4 drops of a dark brown paint and 4 of a cream/off white paint- I used Folkart Parchment for the white and Apple Barrel Chocolate Bar, but anything close should do. It made a little darker grey, but it still looks really nice
I'm actually considering going over the middle zone with it before coating it, to give it that kind of gritty, worn smooth stone look

    Honorable Professor Dungeonmaster,
I have watched and enjoyed all of your videos, but UDT and zoned engagement has transformed my games.
I hope posting in this older thread still reaches you as it references a key component of my comment.
Specifically the relation to stage play sets at 3:43 of Zoned Dungeon Terrain for D&D & Pathfinder (Ep. 100) th-cam.com/video/XfAKW5mNrTI/w-d-xo.html
As a nearly lifelong Thespian this made sooo much sense to me. The stage itself is a prop and sets the mood, never to upstage the
    actors.
So I have abandoned hundreds perhaps thousands of tiles, walls, doors, windows and elaborate 'Set Pieces' (both purchased and home 3D Printed) as well as assorted Battlemats.
I now set the table with 2, two-sided pieces of UDT and everyone loves it. One disk Tavern and Stone, the other
Wildlands and Classic Dungeon. Quickly drop on some tree trunks, pillars, doorways, stairs or partial walls and the STAGE is set the scene has changed.
And now a request. Please follow-up on the stage association, in terms of miniatures.
Should they not also follow the classic Greasepaint approach of the theater's make-up in their painting?
Exaggerated eyes, lips, poses and props; designed to be seen from a distance not a under a Crystal Brush microscope.
Many of the recurring minis in your videos seem to follow this idea, but I would love to hear you expound on that idea.
I hope this finds you and the family well and that you will consider my request as a topic for one of your future videos.
    With respect and anticipation,
    Richard

I was also just about to embark on making my own version #1. Now I'm going to make it double-sided. Side 1 - classic grid, Side 2 - new zoned. So really the ultimate, ultimate dungeon terrain :)

Made a solid start on it last night. I found the foam to be a bit hard to cut (I have the 1", it's more crumbly/flaky than I expected). UDT #1 side fully-gridded. UDT #2 middle rings drawn, final outer ring to go. And just joined your patreon. Good stuff!
