I love swatching! It’s so relaxing. I swatch all the supplies I own. And it is very helpful to see the actual colors. I love color! Your swatch chart ideas are very interesting. ❤
Thanks Helen...loved your beautiful paintings. I've recently purchased the light fast set and have swatches them myself..but I really like the format you've done. It makes the subtleties between the shades easier to identify. Think I'll be replicating this. Your videos are always so informative..
The swatch booklet is a great idea. I’ve combined but Derwent Lightfast with my Luminance pencils because they work so well together for me. I’m going to give your swatch booklet a go, it will certainly be helpful. Have you tried using odourless mineral spirits like Zest it with the Derwent pencils. The results are amazing especially on some of the darker colours.
I honestly find it ridiculously useful!! Yes - thank you! - if ever I'm just using coloured pencils on their own, I always use Zest-it, think it's brilliant!
I just love seeing these simple yet beautiful swatch videos, it's so satisfying. Loved your quick paintings at the beginnig of the video too. Keep up the great work, awesome video!
Simply love the paintings that you have in your sketch book. Especially the little bird and the landscapes. Hahahha, you have taken up a thing that I am struggling with. Color charts! Yes, they are important and I enjoy when I have them. Making them though, is something I have to force me to do 😂. Thank you so much for your video 🤗🤗
I was thinking they looked a creamy texture and you answered that question at the end 👍. I Love the pictures in your sketch book particularly the bird. Btw that date stamp took me right back to the seventies when I did office work 😂😂.
I have a much fuller video on the pencils, plus comparison with other main pencil brands in the description box, if you're interested. Yes, ha! Blast from the past!
Really helpful videos Helen thank you, I’m leaning toward the Lightfast,I think I’ll do a bit of a pick n mix and choose colours which appeal to me the most, rather than buy a whole set and not use some of the colours and see how I get along with them.
I have the whole range of spectrum noir, I got the used off eBay, I don’t see anyone using them, they’re nice pencils but they’re always breaking. I’d like to replace them. So far I have 12 Derwent drawing pencils, 2 Carandache luminance (indigo and payers grey) and one Holbein in earth green. They’re all lovely but I’m still searching. I’m trying a couple of Derwent lightfast with my next order. I really love your idea of the pencil cases and swatch sheets though. Xx
I've never used Spectrum Noir pencils - not ever seen them about. The other brands of pencils you have are all fairly soft ones - is that what you're after? They're all really lovely brands, but if in the kind of drawings you do, you need something harder for doing details, you might consider trying Faber Castell Polychromos too.
This was really helpful! I'm looking at buying a few Derwent Lightfast (open stock) to see how i like them and the color swatches at online stores doesn't seem very true to color.
Thanks for the video! I just got some Derwent pencils, and I love their creaminess, but I am having trouble fitting them into my sharpener. What sharpener works well for you?
Hi Helen I'm not sure which are available, but Jennifer Stay at Coloring Bliss has several free swatch charts you can print out. I know Prismacolor for sure for all 150, Faber Castell watercolor pencils, Inktense. There are more. She has many free resources. Jennifer and her husband are very generous. I love swatching. It's relaxing.
How do Apricot and Dark Honey compare to Polychromos Terracotta? I really want a dirty orange that’s not too brown but I’m worried they’ll turn out the same as Terracotta which I already have. It’s a tricky colour.
I do a video comparing Derwent Lightfast to lots of other top brand pencils here: th-cam.com/video/Dsyqgqw8spY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aihqBtOfFaj41y2I The sheets comparing those colours are towards the end of the video.
I remember years ago seeing in an A&I magazine a painting with these Derwent pencils and I honestly had to look at it more that twice. It was like a photograph such was the detail. I thought the magazine had made a mistake and placed the original photo on the page instead of the artist's work. Must have cost you a bob or two. (Anyone remember what a bob was? 😂)
6:41 Colour swatching begins here.
I enjoyed watching you draw your color swatches from dark to light pressure and in your order. Well done! Thank you and God bless you.
Always so impressed by your art supply organization and beautiful swatch pages!
Lovely video, thanks for sharing

I'm afraid I actually like making them in their own right! I just like looking at colour!

Beautiful! I might do this today 😁

I wanted to make charts that match up with the layout inside my pencils cases, which is why I've chosen this way.
@@helencryer I understand. I just figured I would throw it out there. You never know when you might use them😄
if you could only have one type of pencil for working over watercolour, which ones would you choose ?
I'd probably pick Luminance.
Love the swatch booklet Helen. Did you print or hand draw the lines?
Thanks! Just hand drawn.

@@helencryer that’s awesome, thanks! I think maybe Goldenrod is what I’m after. Apricot is darker than I expected.
Great!

They're really very lovely pencils! I do think the colours need to be complemented with those from other sets though.
