    Thank you for this tutorial. I baked so many of these cakes and fed them to my co workers to celebrate a joyous and important accomplishment of my career as a nurse for 23 years. They did not know what I was celebrating, but they all said it is a perfect moist pound cake. I give you 5 stars and Sam is just right this is the best.
    I tried the other pound cake you taught, but this is the winner. For some reason the King's cake is not that sweet even though it has also 3 cups of sugar. Thank you for finding your tutorial. Not difficult to bake.

    Linda i am a new sub. I have been making this exact cake for at least forty years and when I started out I used a hand mixer for twenty minutes. I was so happy when I got my stand mixer. I have been married for fifty one years and this is still my husbands favorite cake with my home grown frozen peaches. Love your channel

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Diane and welcome! So glad to have you on board!! I love this cake and the ease of making it. I agree with you though, it's so much easier if you use a stand mixer. The texture and taste of this cake is wonderful. I had no idea the recipe is so old...I mistakenly added sour cream only to discover there was no sour cream in the recipe. Does your recipe call for sour cream? TFW God Bless, Linda

    Hands I was talking to a elderly woman in a waiting room and she told me as we talked about baking. The best way to grease a cake cooking pan was to mix well about 4 to 5 table spoon of cooking oil and 2 table of flour brush on cake come out with ease and look professional. Wish I could remember her name so sweet and dead right on cake release. 😇

      Yes I like cakes made with shortening. I was thinking that 1 1/2 c of shortening would have been too much,but it looked delicious. I give it a thumbs up and will give it a try. In fact I am baking a sour cream pound cake as I type. I am the Seventh Ward Food Critic from New Orleans. I created the name because my father cooked on the Leslie Lykes Steamship where he was a Merchant Seaman. I think his title was first class baker. I tell alk that he was a Chief. Good night.

    hello Linda
    I made it just like you said and it turned out perfect!! The color was a beautiful yellow golden brown. I normally make 7up pound cake but thus is my go to for now on. It's beautiful when it comes out the oven. It is " The King". it was very moist and light be because of the shortening. Please try it, so easy to make. I did put a light vanilla glaze, but it didn't need it.

      Just wanted to share with you another idea for a pound cake that turned out so well...I added one cup of mayonnaise!...Duke's mayonnaise, to be honest...any brand will do...an amazing crust...but had some folks eat some slices of the Pound Cake King...they later watched your video...and now, two of them have baked this cake...so, I'm spreading the word and talking up your youtube channel...and let me tell you, everyone loved the cake and your youtube channel...we all live in Alabama...and Lady (you)...you most assuredly know all about pound cakes...thanks again for all you do...about to email this recipe and youtube video to some friends in Pennsylvania and California...they need to know about this...many, many thanks to you!

    I just took this cake out of the oven. I couldn't bring myself to dump in everything all at once. I blended it like I do all of my pound cakes. In addition, I added the sour cream, and baked it at 300°F for 95 minutes. I wish I could show you what it looks like. Not the crusty top at all, but the beautiful dome splits, and a really tender crumb. Thank you for this recipe! I'll be making it again!

      Hello Jaki This IS a great pound cake. I've made it several times, never had a problem adding all the ingredients at once, after all, I saw it made that way and it came out beautifully each time, but if it makes you feel better to add the ingredients the traditional way, then you go right ahead and do it your way! I'm glad you're happy with the results!! TFW God Bless, Linda

    I made this today and it rose beautifully while it was cooking and rose about and 1 1/2 inch above the pan. I didn't even put all the batter inside the pan. So Excited!!! Took it out to let it cool and when I went back it had fell! lol I just about cried. Most of the top crust hung to the sides of the pan- but lord that crust is soooo good!!!
    I don't know what I did wrong- but will definitely be trying again!!

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Misty, next time either use a larger pan OR pour the batter about 2" from the top of the pan. Any batter left over use another small oven proof dish and they can bake together. I've had the same problem with other pound cake recipes not this one but I do know it happens. I know the pound cake itself was delicious and that crust is so good. TFW and commenting and God Bless! Linda

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Misty...I re-read your problem with the over rising and falling of the pound cake...here's another scenario: The batter was mixed too long and put too much air into the batter. That would cause it to rise and then fall. That may have also been my problem as well. After you've added all your ingredients, mix only about 2 minutes until everything is combined then pour it into your prepared pan. I hope this helps. God Bless, Linda

    What a beautiful pound cake!! And unusual, easy method! Have to try this! I love the way it’s mixed, beaten longer than I have ever heard of (!) and using 3 different flavorings! I may try it with butter flavoring ( I just found that again, but it’s not the same “butternut flavoring) that I remember from the 60’s, that Mom used in German Sweet Chocolates Pound Cake, and Butternut Pound Cake. They were just amazing, & I so wish I could find that exact flavoring.
    But thanks for this, Linda!! Will be following you!

    one bowl method exists for pound cakes, it's also called the reverse creaming method. the fats from the eggs and butter locks the flour from tunnelling. This method is more forgiving than the usual creaming method.

      Hands That Cook i don't see why it shouldn't the main reason for using this method to prevent gluten formation during whipping. which is essential for the structure in pound cakes and butter cakes. cakes with added leaving agents don't need such beating.

    I made this recipe over the weekend. The 1st attempt failed!!! Then I looked up videos on what might of been the issue. I live in Fl so do to the humidity elevation etc. I needed to add baking powder, rule of thumb is 1 tsp. per cup of flour so I added 3 tsps. And thankfully I was able to successfully bake and enjoy this delicious pound cake!

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Shelley, I'm glad you were able to enjoy this pound cake but with 9 eggs in the recipe, you shouldn't have needed any baking powder...the eggs are the leavening. I don't know what caused it to fail. I live in Alabama and it's very humid here also. I've never had a problem making this pound cake. What a shame all the ingredients were wasted on the first cake. Especially the 9 eggs. Were all the ingredients room temperature? That could have caused a failure. I don't know what else it could have been and I know you aren't asking my advice but it puzzles me and the cost to make it bothers me as well. I thought of one other thing it could have been...beating it too high of a speed could have put too much air in it (that's why you bang the unbaked cake on the counter a few times before you put it into the oven) In any case, I'm glad the second cake was a success. God Bless, Linda

Stayed home on New Years Eve...those that don't drink all year are out on the roads that night, I won't take the chance. None of my family are drinkers either so I know they all stayed home or very close by. The cake is good. The long beating time is a must and secret for the velvet type crumb inside. If you make this cake or any other pound cake, add a teaspoon of Mace to the mix. It will make the cake come alive. I have a very old recipe book and it has the best pound cake made. @@Handsthatcook the thing about mace is the amount you use. The cake I have the old recipe for uses a lot of ingredients including ten eggs. If you use too much mace, it can be overpowering. Personally, I love the taste and even use it in store bought pound cakes. Even in rice pudding. True, different people have different taste and that at times comes from what part of the country you grew up in or live in. I bet you don't like grits either. Chef Jerry

      +Tressa Daigle Hi Tressa For some reason your comment has just now shown up on this page. Remember to have everything, eggs, sour cream, and any liquids, room temperature. Don't over beat the batter (it will be greasy if you do) ALL your pound cakes should turn out wonderfully if you follow those rules. You may need to have your oven gauged to be certain it comes up to the proper temperature. That could be what is causing them not to turn out right. Thank you for the compliment on helping you! I'm here to help and so glad I was able to help you. My best to you and your family. Linda

      ***** I've been in a "pack it" mode for some time, and have not made a thing in a while. Very unusual for me. I've been packing up the rental house I'm in right now, so that I can go to my property and start some work on it, to be able to move in this spring. I usually get to try new recipes all the time because I cook so much, but since I found that I had a chance to move, I have been only working on packing. Boy, you never know just how much you have until you start packing things up. I didn't even do a tree this year!! Never been without a Christmas tree either! I always copy recipes, so I'm sure I have it saved, and I will make it and make a video too. I actually miss cooking. I can only stand fast food for so long, and then I have to make some "real food" I'm just now getting to where I can walk around here without being worried that I will trip over something. I'm really glad you mentioned this, because this is the perfect time to make a home made pie. I actually get sick from eating the way I have had to, and after this weekend, I should have my kitchen back. One good thing about it, I did find some kitchen "toys" that I can use again, and a really old meat grinder that I have been looking for. Thank you again for the reminder, I will make the pie after the weekend, and will let you know how it turns out. Bless, Sheila

    Hi, I made this yesterday according to your written instructions as I had watched your video last week. I ended up cooking mine an additional 20 minutes. My toothpick came out clean but after it started to cool, it collapsed some. When I cut it, it was not done inside. My oven was at 300, I checked with a thermometer. Any idea what happened? Should I try it again but bake it at 350?

      Yes I do know (I believe) Reduce by half or leave out totally, the sour cream AND be sure to beat thoroughly. Don't increase the temperature. I'm pretty sure that is the problem. I'm assuming you know the shortening is a solid shortening like Crisco? Let me know please. TFW God Bless, Linda

      Thank you for the quick reply! I did use Crisco. I am going to make this again in the next day or so with your suggestion of reducing the sour cream. I will let you know how it turns out. Again thank you so much for your help

      I give up, lol. I love your recipes but this one doesn’t like me. I tried it again following your suggestion to reduce the sour cream, but the same problem happened again. I think I’ll try one of your other pound cake recipes. God Bless and please keep sharing!

      @@KikiH2013 Hi Kathryn I don't know what could be going wrong for you. I've made this numerous times with no failure. Leave the sour cream out totally. I rechecked the original recipe and found I mistook part of the shortening as sour cream. This recipe contains no sour cream at all. I corrected my written recipe and I'm sorry for all the problems it has caused you. God Bless, Linda
