My daughter said as a 26 year old she hates eBay because it seems like an old 90’s website. She loves Etsy for its esthetics and ease of use. So young people seem to like more modern platforms. eBay needs help to appeal to younger generations. Also they need to treat sellers much better.
Ebay definitely needs to treat their sellers better. I was a Top-Rated Seller and I worked so hard to get that rep. However, they bumped me down to Above Standard. And they couldn't tell me why. Finally, one Ebay person told me I haven't put down the tracking number for 18 items. No! That did NOT happen. I am obsessive about putting the tracking in.
Come to find out, a buyer had bought 18 cookbooks from me. 18 different auctions. They were mailed in one box. So that one box got a tracking number and was listed within an hour of purchase. There was no place to put the same tracking number for each of the 18 cookbooks since they all went in one box. But THAT is what made them bump me down to Above Standard. Go figure.
And I have been selling on Ebay since 1998.

And people are always telling me that nobody reads books anymore and I should sell better things. I will ask them, "Better than the $129.99 book I sold or the $71 cookbook? Better than that?

I love your channels Kevin-I truly believe that shipping increases every 6 months is a big problem also. For someone to pay as much as $10+ for 2lbs is just a game changer.
Kevin, an important part of the equation when considering market share capture by competitors is what THEIR net profits on revenue are. Mercari, Poshmark, WhatNot and the likes have NEVER turned a profit and operate annually at losses to the tune of tens of millions a year. eBay turns $2bn in profit annually. The competitors wither and die on the vine unless they are bought out by a bigger platform. They simply can't capture enough market share and operate profitably ... especially prescient in a high interest rate environment where their loans get more expensive to service.

Ebay's problems stem from the top down, but it can't be brushed over that their development team is severely lacking talent and reliability. I rolled my eyes when reading the summer seller update and buyers paying on offers was on there AGAIN! Imagine announcing a feature two years ago and talking about it as a feature still. Ebay live has made very little progress, whereas Poshmark rolled it out over the course of just a few months. Ebay rolls out an update to how views are calculated, its still broken a year later. Indexing and search havent worked properly in a long time. App issues, international shipping program issues... the list goes on.
Well, you have no idea what their codebase is like. It might be very difficult to implement this given their vast legacy systems. Just doing a full regression test would be a true nightmare.

It's funny that you were talking about that subject because I was thinking the same thing . Too many ebay sellers , selling the same things. I quit selling because I got tired of the scammers. It gave me a terrible headache dealing with all the scammers on ebay. I enjoy your channel very much. Thanks for the videos.

I can’t get people to buy and I don’t sell trash and I keep reducing selling prices. I have increased inventory by 300% but I’m making way less money. Poshmark live has bottomed out prices.

My wife has been reselling on eBay for prolly 20 years as a hobby . We both have full time jobs and do this in our spare time . Recently we have put a lot more time into sourcing better items . Anyone have any luck with other platforms. eBay and Facebook marketplace are the platforms we use . Any ideas ?

A friend of mine who works in logistics mentioned the fact large retailers have been liquidating like crazy. People can buy brand new items for what we resellers are listing them for. So thats another layer of competition.

Oh, I have. They have been advertising High End Sneakers, Watches and Purses. All the items they are backing with a authentication guarantee. Interesting thing about the eBay Motors ad is the new Part Fit Guarantee. What it doesn't go into is that it doesn't apply to all the car parts folks list, that do not meet the Guarantee criteria, but the customers now think it does. Who is guaranteeing those parts?
Now, what I haven't seen lately is an ad for a good vintage item that has survived and needs to be re-homed. Or a pari of $20 shoes, $25 purse or $30 dollar watch. LOL
I started cross listing to other platforms a few weeks ago & got a sale. Sales on eBay have been steady, good selling days & bad. I’ve also been ended items & sell similar on older listings which I think is helping sales. Thank you for all the info you provided us!!
The change in eBay from reseller site to an outlet form Chinese new merch is amazing! Ebay needs to decide what they are: a reseller site or "Amazon" from China. Or figure out how to make it work so that people who believe in sustainabilty and reusing can find items. My husband and I bought my 1920's engagement ring on eBay 20 years ago. Back then finding a ring that looked like my Grandmother's was a challenge, not because their weren't used or antique rings, but because there were so many and people weren't used to describing rings attributes. Now I have to click bunches of different things to turn off the items that are new or coming directly from manufacture in China.
I have purchased things from eBay sellers and it arrived delivered through Amazon, from an Amazon truck. Weird.

It's definetly true that resellers have increased, at least in my area. If you're not at a garage sale, yard sale, rummage sale, or thrift store at least an hour before they start. You're not getting anything worth reselling.

I dont know. There are these 2 thrift stores which are the same company that I go to twice weekly. I mainly sell men's Sportswear and outdoor clothing. I'm always finding the best stuff because I don't think there's really any reseller in my area selling any of that 😂
Glad to hear this Kevin. Where I have just retired, my wife and I have started back selling on eBay and thinking about going to another platform also. Never put all your eggs in one basket. It is scary to hear eBay may be slowing up for lot of resellers. Thankful and blessed that I do not have to count on reselling for income.

That's why Ebay is about to die like the old Yahoo while China's Aliexpress and Banggood are becoming more and more popular around the world.

I’m not surprised that the sellers on eBay are declining as their grip on the reseller market loosens. Also with the cost to sell on eBay increasing so much the other platforms become even more enticing.

I know one thing that hurts eBay is the shipping cost. The deal Whatnot has with Shippo is great for both the seller and especially the buyer. Anything up to a pound is $8.35 and then it’s free shipping up to 5 pounds. And there is so much more to found besides stupid Funko’s! Thanks for breaking it down for us. 😊

Very interesting video Kevin…you have changed your thinking on a number of things recently….and you are not alone…a lot of resellers who use to say I don’t need to cross list…I don’t need to sell on other platforms are starting to say differently. Now if we could just get the cross listing software a little more seller friendly….phone app….automatic delisting etc

I dont expect any youtuber to admit that they are the cause of well, a lot of things. TH-camrs brought 1000's of sellers online that wouldn't have even thought about it. That has caused a lot of catagories to become saturated which means less sales for everyone. Now lots of people will simply give up. And lots of people dont have any idea even how to check if they are even making a profit. I myself am retired and mainly do this just to stay busy and it's fun. But believe me if I wasn't making a profit I wouldn't continue.

I was researching eBay videos bc I plan on posting my first every sales video and I had never watched any on TH-cam. I’m certainly not at the reselling level you are at, but I really enjoyed hearing someone speak my Reselling language:). I’m looking forward to watching more videos!
I recently (about 7 months ago) started a.reselling business. After it progressed from selling personal stuff, I started looking into selling platforms, including eBay. My intention was to start on eBay but found it so difficult to get set up that I gave up... and I still haven't gone back to try again. I wouldn't say I'm the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I am college educated... so I'm capable of learning. I just found it complicated and not worth the effort. Gave up. So maybe their system is too antiquated and needs some updating? If I feel that way, others probably do too. Other platforms are way easier to get started on... even if they don't have the same level of exposure currently. They will catch up.

At about every fourth yard sale I go to I can tell it is eBay inventory being liquidated. More sellers quitting in my opinion. I've been an eBay seller for 10 years full time. It's a lot of work and people don't realize it. Ebay NOT "staying in their own lane" has always been a concern of mine and is the only thing that I believe could destroy eBay.

I've been saying this all year. eBay is doing NOTHING to target younger buyers. It needs to market on TikTok and runs ads specifically targeting 16-35 demographic. They have not pivoted especially in the last 5-10 years with so much growth in Amazon and social media. We are definitely in trouble!
I have had to revamp my eBay store to get more sales. I did a big clean out of my old inventory that hadn’t sold in one year. And now I delist and relist more often.

I just found a BIG problem with my ebay listings. I just did an online search copying my listing titles on ebay and searching online just to see what would pop up. I discovered that there are LOTS of my listings that say their active on ebay, but when I searched for them online, listings showed up as ended. I found at least 10 and hadn't gone through even half a page. I feel like ebay has been gaslighting me because if I call to see if there's a problem, someone always says, "No, everything's good, your account is fine." That's obviously not the case! I have less than 200 listings on Etsy and almost 1700 on ebay, and the amount of sales I have today are the same. I'm still going to sell on ebay, but I'm going to start focusing less on ebay and more on other sites.

Business is Business. I ran an estate sale company and auction company and did personal property appaisals. Tough business. You learn to pivot. Just like ebay. I leaned to stick to what you know and do it better than anyone else.
i think the issue is that there is not enough supply to meet demand. Dueto inflation sky rocketing and tangible goods not be manufactured as much due to the pandemic and people are holding on to their used things because they don't have the money to buy it new in the store there are not as much items available on Ebay. What you are seeing on Ebay is people drop shipping new stuff from Aamzon etc.
Basically eBay has babied their customers and turned them into scammers. They cry about every little thing and want a partial refund for the dumbest things. Tired of people period.

I used to sell about 10-15 items a week. I am lucky to sell 1-2 items a week now. Inflation has killed my store over the last year or so. People are not buying like they were.

eBay is not dead, the market has changed and we have to adapt. I just had a day of sales on ebay. My guess is.. you have to start selling quality items and none of that pandemic junk.

You can’t use the number of sellers verses number of buyers. You use the number of items listed verses the number of items sold. Sellers may have decreased but volume of items listed has exploded! The last number I saw was eBay claimed it had close to two billion items available. These are the numbers they use to say “look at our growth”. Number of items sold is never disclosed so we can’t see if the ratio between inventory and sales is a healthy one. So we have to look at other factors to see if company is healthy, like the things I mentioned in my earlier comment. A financially healthy company will reinvest profits into the company to drive growth. eBay appears to be tying to drive growth through increased seller fees and using sales as carrots for forcing sellers to list, list, list so they came use those numbers to as “growth”. Anyone who says eBay still has the cheapest fees is not taking into account the increase in fees through promoted listings. Which has already increased substantially since the program was launched. To play properly on eBay, big or small it costs way more than it should especially given the service received.
Ebay's revenue peaked in Q4 2013. They started using Cassini in 2013. In 2014 they had a dramatic drop in revenue and has never recovered since. Coincidence? Possibly. But they've lost the instruction manual for sure. Their traffic continues to drop. Buyers and dropping. Their ecommerce rank continues to drop. Yet, their Walmart CEO thinks selling high end watches and shoes are going to save it.

Well, I think Ebay is going to change over the next couple years probably allowing more like instant sales similar to whatnot. I kind of believe the auction part of it will be over.

Instant Payment on an eBay Offer: for the first time since they announced it years ago, I got an Offer today and it said that if I Accepted it, the Buyer would be charged and Pay Immediately. I was actually surprised to see they finally pulled it off. That was always a weak point for eBay. I accepted the Offer and it popped in seconds later as Paid!
Interesting . I got that message as well but it still took a day for the payment to show up.
@@desertpinevintage Yes. It could very well be that my buyer happened to be sitting at his laptop and when I accepted the offer he opted to pay immediately, while yours did not. Could be the note, saying he'd be charged, had no bearing on it at all. only time, and more accepted offers will reveal the truth.

Ebay is not dying. The buyer is changing due to their spending power diminishing with inflation. I changed to selling what people need rather than what people want. Slower sales, but my inventory is smaller with higher dollar value items. Also, I'm seeing twice as many people at the yard sales in my area. Time will tell how eBay changes in the near future.
Did you read the Q1 2023 conference call? John Iannone says right at the outset their revenue volume is growing, not shrinking. Moreover, the numbers are skewed by 90% of their gross revenue coming from eBay motors. They are also pushing ahead with tire sales. So if the sales of this kind of big-ticket item go down substantially, due perhaps to interest rates or recession, their revenue will drop substantially, even if customers continue to flock in to buy Tupperware and ashtrays.

You have to love when individuals make great sales because that means that you can do it. Don't hate the game or the player just learn how individuals that are playing the game and are winning and do that.
I always enjoy every single video and learn something new every time. I’ve been on eBay since 2002 very part time at times, and now I’m working to get it more full-time .I only have a couple hundred listings at this point but working to get them up to 1000. Very interested List perfectly but want to make sure I have enough listed items and enough sales before I try that.

I think things have definitely changed with people’s buying habits. I’ve actually changed my listing and buying habits in the past 6 months. I have stopped buying and listing items under $15-20 ala Dave a bit but I’m actually doing it unlike Dave. Now I’m selling less items but making just as much money but have noticed higher priced items don’t sell as fast.
Ebay is still very much alive the stats in Feb 2022 was 185 million active buyers and 19 million sellers worldwide

eBay is a complete mess. I agree with another comment, it starts from the top down. An algorithm that they make worse with time which makes sales harder and harder to get, constant glitches, very little support for sellers, always adding and increasing fees to drain us of every cent they can, etc. You want more revenue eBay, make auctions and best offers immediate payments already! How freaking long does this take to roll out? Every retailer on the planet operates this way except eBay. They are losing millions of dollars in lost revenue because of the number of people that don't pay.

eBay is most definitely dying. It’s dying for several reasons. 1) To many resellers flooding the platform with to many listings, way more than their servers can handle. This is why it seems your store is either on or off. 2) Policies that favor buyers at sellers expense. This is unfair and handicaps potentially good sellers from growth on the platform due to algorithm manipulation and causes sellers to feel like eBay doesn’t value them. It’s definitely not the partnership it should be. 3) eBay favors profit for investors over investment in upgrading the platform. It uses the large volume of items listed as marketing to get more investors and paint a false image of the company’s growth. This is why is seems that only listing triggers sales, when we all know a vast majority of sellers have plenty of items listed already that should trigger sales. eBay has built a house of cards that is destined to fail, unfortunately.

My eBay sales have basically dropped off completely even though I am listing 8-10 items a day.
The “offers” I am receiving is close to 75% of my asking price…crazy in my opinion. Since I have a lot of free shipping literally I would be losing $$ by selling an item at the prices a buyer is offering.

I was sad to see how many “big time sellers” received “free tape”…it’s the small sellers that are struggling BIG time..those of us without a youtube following (no disrespect to the successful TH-camrs).
I guess I am just frustrated that I am listing and listing and not selling anything, even though I am competitively priced…..
same here. I was a top rated power seller since 2002, and this year its been a trickle. Barely sold anything in last two months.
Hopefully it will improve when all these changes start to cost Ebay money and they snap back to their senses. But who knows.

I stopped listing and just trying to now get rid of my inventory. Between the fees, costs, and shipping, I’m barley making few bucks profit. I’m done.
business is like the animal kingdom with natural selection, the weak will die off and the strong will prosper. new people will jump in an try it, others who thought it was easier then it turns out, will fade away. being self employed isn't for everyone. then there are people like me, retired and never had a real job for 6 months at a time in my life, and I started working at 11 years old
There is a lot of problems with Ebay and then there are some issues that our government has caused, especially that allows low cost Chinese goods with free shipping. Many do not know that the USPS via government mandate will ship up to 4.4lbs via epacket rate to its final destination from China to the final destination in the US for way less than it costs you or me to ship that package across the street or within the same town. For us to ship that same package back to China costs way more. This policy alone floods the Ebay market with goods that the US resellers can't compete with. I once had tp look for parts to repair pS4 controllers and it was cheaper for me to buy a lot of 10 analog sticks from a China source with free shipping than it was for me to buy one from a US seller's due to the shipping cost alone. It is bad enough when platforms like Ebay are hurting resellers, but it is even worse when "free trade" policies by our government undermine our very citizens....

I've been selling on eBay for a good while. I think sales under $30 have dropped due to Whatnot sellers increasing more and more. My high dollar sales are steady but I don't even fool with the lower priced items anymore. Between the low ball offers and low prices on less expensive items on Whatnot it's not worth my time and frustration.
