Truly, this demonstrates just who this recording (now around 53 years old) is still most certainly considered one of the best EVER done!!! Yes, others (Karajan, Leinsdorf and Sinopoli among others) do get to equal it and make convincing cases for alternative viewpoints; however, the combination of Decca/London's stellar sound-engineering, the Vienna Philharmonic's golden sound and stellar playing AND the contributions of the various soloists, ALL outstanding and totally committed (Stolze giving us an outstanding view of a slimy Herod Antipas, Grace Hoffman a truly psychopathic and sadistic Herodias matching her daughter for sheer evil, the great Eberhard Waechter giving us an unpretentious yet dignified Saint-John-the-Baptist - and the truly-great Birgit Nilsson doing her best not only to bring out the full weight of the "Isolde"-side of Strauss's vocal writing while giving us something of what this same composer must have had in mind with such a gigantic voice having to emanate from a young, supposedly-undefiled girl who only afterwards proves just how depraved she is!!!!), harnessed together by one of the great German-type conductors of all time simply make this CD-pair HEAVENLY!!!!
The first Salome I ever heard and still the best.
i realize it's kind of off topic but do anybody know of a good website to watch new tv shows online?
@Chase Jefferson ehh I'd suggest flixportal. just google for it:) -hugh
@Hugh Jadiel Thanks, signed up and it seems like a nice service :D I really appreciate it!
@Chase Jefferson Glad I could help :D
Grabación de referencia absoluta. Gracias por compartir.
The original conductor's score manuscript, in Italian, is on eebay.
Nilsson is beyond compare, but what about Gerhard Stolze? - extraordinary
Love Nilsson but don't like Stolze much
Stolze sounds like mime here, very out of place.

Nilsson is great, but she sounds forty, not sixteen. Stratas in the Götz Friedrich film is far preferable. Salome should sound like a nubile, seductive young woman, not a Valkyrie.
But I don’t think Stratas could pull this off live.
