Ask any orchestral musician and he will probably tell you that Strauss's music is the most dificult to play and conduct. And D.Juan must be on the top of the list with all its complexity. This piece must have been played thousands of times since its creation by hundreds of orchestras but I dare anyone to point out a clearly more revealing, cleaner, tighter than this one. For me, D.Juan is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever created, gives me goose bumps everytime I hear it, brings tears to my eyes and, if I'm alone and don't risk beeing interned, I conduct like crazy! When hearing it try to "dive" deep inside that "mass" of sound so perfectly combined and harmonized and every time you will find something, some detail, something important to the whole you never noticed before. A treasure...

I read this comment and was expecting gunfire. If you want to shorten Glockenspiel then you can say Glocken notes which means bells. It's true the percussionist is as much a virtuoso as everyone in the orchestra; and that is needed to play Strauss.

One sunny day, in April of 1965, a twelve-year-old, friend of mine, Bob, told me of a strange response his parents made to his question about what it was like 'making love'. They brought him into the living room. where the record player was and set the needle on a spot in the early part of the recording of "Don Juan" by Richard Strauss. His father said, "Son, when the music starts your mother and I will leave the room and you listen closely to the music; that will be the answer to your question and we will be back in three minutes." I did as my father and mother suggested and listened very closely...while listening it was like that feeling I get when I start on a swing, going up and down slowly at first then getting really high and jump off...I'm going to like 'making love' when my turn comes!!!
    That is what Bob said.
PS, on the TH-cam video it starts at the 1:40 time and ends at the 4:15 time.

Oh come on y’all! Such gushing! A perfectly acceptable performance, but please have a listen to some legendary recordings. Try Solti/Chicago from 1975. The thrilling forward propulsion, the cinematic sweep…..Solti and his band leave these guys in the dust! As for the loud, nasal oboe in this recording, I’ll take Ray Still (Chicago) at the peak of his career in 1975, or John Mack (Szell/Cleveland) for musicality and sheer beauty of sound.

This music definitely requires the most virtuosity from the musicians besides Ravel's music.

Okay the way the flautist looks at the oboist and takes up the tune...

I’m an oboist and I watched this video for the solos and it’s kinda sad that I can tell that he’s playing a buffet crampon virtuose oboe.

Someone tell me - at 12:47 does each horn play a different 4-note downward run?
I thought the principal clarinet, whose name I can never remember, was in sparkling form.
