Solti redid this piece for “Orchestra” where Dudley Moore guest conducted in which the series talked about what the conductor does.

Culshaw said Karajan and Britten were his most intelligent studio artists. Solti was a pure musician.

I prefer him as an (exciting) opera conductor. In orchestral music he was never the best, particularly in Chicago.

Totally agree. Hearing Solti conduct Verdi at Covent Garden was a revelation. Ok I was very young but the sound he got from the orchestra will always remain with me.

You can't be serious? I guess you never heard his Mahler with Bud Herseth and the CSO brass section? That's your loss. His recordings of Mahler 5, 6 and Mahler 8 recorded in the Sofiensaal in Vienna are incredible.

      J totally agree with you.
Have you ever heard Karl Böhm's famous but dry rehearsal with Wiener Philharmoniker ,avaible on TH-cam ? What do you think about this on ?

@@jean-christopheMiquel-ef3ur No I have not. Will check it out. When I was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony, Sir Georg guest conducted us in The Flying Dutchman Overture. We also played under Carlo Maria Guilini and Claudio Abbado. I'm a huge fan of anything conducted by Carlos Kleiber. Greatest left hand in the business.
