Lowering GPU Temperatures in a Fractal Design Pop Mini

- The AMD Radeon 6950XT in my main PC was getting very warm while the AMD 5950X was not. I decided to change the cooling setup to try and bring the GPU temps down.

A bit late to the party, but I use a piece of software called Fan Control. You can assign fan curves tied to components. I have the pop mini air, and use the top front fan for cpu intake, bottom front for the GPU and have the rear exhaust fixed at 50%. Both front intakes run on a curve based on temps.
Very interesting suggestion. I’ve moved away to 011 mini now but I’ll pin this for others to try.
Hey Jimbo - great to see you're doing well and still tinkering with your PC. Just wanted to suggest that if you try the NH-D15S instead of the NH-D15, because of its higher orientation, it probably won't hit the MOSFET/VRM stages so you'd likely be able to shove the additional 140mm fan back in. It ought to fit 'cos if you recall I did similarly with my Black Magic Tardis build way back when... It may lower temps fractionally a tiny bit more & shift some more cool air onto the VRMs which could be useful if you've overclocked the CPU. I haven't done anything more majorly to my build - though I've got a shed load of 2nd hand parts ready to do a i5-9400 + 3060ti combo in a sub 4 litre Velka 3 case. Just haven't got around to tackling it yet. Best Wishes - the ageing rocker buddy from Leeds 🤣
Forgot to mention - if the temps were to drop further by doing this , then that may very well have a knock on effect onto the GPU too - I suspect any lowering of the surrounding internal temps would likely have only a beneficial effect on other components in the case as well.
Thank you very much. That's awesome to know. I had the NH-D15S for quite a while. I'll see if I can pick up an S and see if it fits. Thank you again.
I just checked the S version. It's the same over all height as the non S version, so it has less cooling fins etc. I don't think it'll make a difference with the 140 fan. It has got me thinking though. I wonder if I can stretch the fan holder and add a 120?
@@jimbopcbuilds Now I remember I had an additional Noctua 140mm fan at the rear as an exhaust in the Fractal Core 500 itx case, but it was so tight up to the NH-D15S fin stack that it actually ressembles the NH-D15. I also had two Prolimatech slim 140mmm fans drawing in cool air from above - so you probably have a very similar set-up already so you probably won't benefit further - apart from popping in a rear fan to vent out hot air which might benefit keeping internal temps lower by expelling the hot stuff out directly. The other thing I did was that I lowered the 140mm CPU fan as much as possible and this is what probably blows somewhat cooler air directly onto the VRMs. Have another look if you like on either BuildsGG or PC Partpicker if it's of any help. Regards Brian
Thanks for the follow up Brian. I've ordered 2 noctua 120 fans. I'lls see if I can get one on the cooler, but I am defo adding one as an exhaust to keep 2 in and 2 out.
Same boat almost exactly- pop silent mini case, 3090 is hitting 87-88* while pathtracing in cyberpunk. Running open, gpu only hits around 80. Looking to change fan settings in the BIOS, I too found that I only had cpu and mb sensors for temp, not gpu :/. I just set the fans to full blast which is pretty annoying. I'll try the mobo sensor, thanks!
Let us know how it goes
You should be able to put in a 240 aio in the top. Unless its some older SKU of the case that does not support it.
Otherwise you could have just used fan control. Its software that allows you to track GPU temps and set fan curves. You can set the fan curve to CPU or GPU depending on which is hotter.
I know what fan control is. You’re missing the point. There is no GPU setting in the bios. You can only go with CPU temp. The board does not have a system sensor.
Also I was using a 280 AIO which won’t fit. A 240 will but that would mean buying another AIO.
The over all point of the video was don’t put an AIO at the front if you have a GPU that gets pretty warm.
@@jimbopcbuilds its a great vid, I'm sure many people overlook that point.
It just blows my mind that you can't see the GPU temp... Not even in hwinfo or afterburner?
Even with the ability to manage the fans based on CPU with the AIO being at the front, you want those fans linked to CPU anyway.
i have this case and amzing temp gpu stay 55-60c test game in 4k, because i use hsf deepcool ak620 not use aio cooler
Great cooler. It’s currently top of our cooler league. My GPU runs hot as it’s a 6950xt and it’s only a 2 slot cooler. Which GPU do you have?

Makes sense. The 40 series are pretty efficient.
Top mount aio should be ok. Use some Noctua 140 fans up front.
@@maliksheba6071 The pop mini can only fit a 240 AIO at the top. Mine was a 280.
