  • We've seen/heard a Metal Zone plugged into the effects return of an amp...but what does a DS-1 sound like when you run it in the effects loop of a Marshall Origin 50?

    I use this setup for band rehearsal: a lower end Gibson SG with a decent humbucker into the DS-1, into the Loop In of a 100 W Crate solid state head driving a a Fender 4x12. We play Sabbath/Sleep style stuff. You guys wouldn't believe the tone I get. Truly thousands of dollar tone on a 100s of dollar budget.
    I cut the tone to lose the distortion "fizzle" and it sounds like smooth overdrive.

    0:26 mine too. I have had the same experience of buying and selling a ds 1. I tried it out with boss eq and it's amazing. I use the eq as a volume/bass/treble boost and it sounds amazing!

  • @vexguine

    with guitar>pedal> return you are not using the effects loop. you are just bypassing the pre amp. Thats why the sound is muddy. You dont have enough EQ. It should be: guitar>input>send of amp on pedal in>out of pedal on return of amp. Then you are hitting the pedal with line level of signal, not guitar level.

    • @Foghornish
      @Foghornish 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll find that most amps' fx loops are designed for instrument (guitar pedals) level signals, not line line level. However on some amps the level of the loop is adjustable to use both pedals/guitar rack effects and studio rack effects.

      I have a ds1 that I've not really found a use for, infact I've sold 2 previously by stupidity, so my 3rd.
      I'm going to try this in the fx return of my jcm2000 dsl50 and laney gh50l heads. I'm sick of using the 4 cable method for boosting/delay when doing leads. I also have a boss line selector pedal that I have to possibly trigger a small chain of effects for clean that includes compressor, chorus, reverb. I don't like tap dancing, channel switches or miles of spaghetti cables.

    I have a small 8w tube amp and the DS1 straight into the power amp is wonderful. It becomes a whole new pedal, much more open and easy to dial.

    • @JoeBaermann
      @JoeBaermann 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Will work out fine I guess, I used distortion to reverb in the fx loop and wah to overdrive in front for some years to use both clean and dirty channels on the amps, at zero/low gain setting the distortion works as a volume boost, altough overdrives, equalizers and even some compressors in the loop can also work as a volume boost, as long as you the effect can do a clean sound while pushing up the volume it works, some effects even add some additional EQ options to play around with.
      I think what started it for me was a chorus after a distortion pedal that pushed the volume up when my Metal Muff was in front of the amp, so I moved into the loop which solved that issue without making the distortion sounding bad, also added the option to put the gain down and use it as a post scoop/boost for the amps distortion.
      With that said, it won't sound good when you use a clean channel that is cranked up to the point where it starts to break up or going high gain into high gain.
      Now I'm only using amp distortion with OD as boost in front of the amp, get's metal enough and cuts through a mix.

    I've always loved this pedal. I've owned a few. My favorite Boss pedal of all is the SD-1, specifically the Waza I'm using now with my Marshall. Superb. I use it lightly just to contour the gain or to boost for leads if I'm using a lower gain setting for rhythm. Works well.

    I have a Stratocaster and an Orange cr60 amp (solid state). This combination gives me amazing clean tones but the dirt channel is too fuzzy with the Strat. So I decided to buy an od/distortion pedal (the fender pugilist). Much better results than the amp dirt channel but still far from the beautiful boost channel of my old Marshall Valvestate.so I'll try to put the pedal in the fxloop. Maybe pushing the signal after the preamp will work better, avoiding the fuzziness at high gain.

    Hi, I've got a effect loop level switch on my amp. As far as I know, -10dbv is for instrument and +4dbv is for rack.
    I'm just wondering if the sound is louder when I switch effect loop level to -10dbv, vice versa?

    • @TSFAHTPS
      @TSFAHTPS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I know (and I'm not 100% sure) this all happens at the "send" stage of the loop...so it's basically how much volume you send to whatever you run in the loop...different pedals and/or rack gear may require more or less volume to function properly...but like I said that's all (as far as I know but I could be wrong) happening coming out of the "Send" in the loop...in this video the "Send" of the loop wasn't used...I plugged the guitar into the pedal and then I went from the pedal to the "Return" of the loop...that basically bypasses the preamp in the amp and used the pedal as a preamp...so in this case I don't think it matters where you set the loop level as you don't use that part of the loop...hope that makes sense?!?

    • @TSFAHTPS

      If you run it the way I did then you bypass the gain on the amp - by plugging into the effects return of the amp you don’t use the preamp stage of the amp...the gain control and EQ are usually part of the preamp stage of your amp. If you plug the pedal completely into the effects loop - into both the send & return - then the amps gain control will work...but it probably won’t sound very good ...but you can give it a try!!

      You need to just have it in the return of the loop...no actually "in" the loop...you plug the guitar into the pedal then go from the pedal to the effects loop 'return' (nothing is plugged into the 'send')...that way you bypass the amps preamp and only use the poweramp and the pedal becomes the new preamp

    Think I prefer direct into the front of the amp from this video alone? Seemed to have a bit more clarity - but really, you'd have to be IN that room to truly know and/or appreciate the difference! Nice one... :D

    I use all od pedals through my fx loop. It is a master volume amp and you have to have master and gain the same setting to work properly. Better than using it out front by far.

    • @CHOPERUS23
      @CHOPERUS23 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By putting your overdrive in the fx loop you don't overdrive the pre-amp stage so effectively making the overdrive pedal almost useless.

      @standupstraight9691 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear what you say, but that is the net effect of the way I do it. Perhaps Im overdriving the power amp section.

    I think you had the level too high.. when you finally turned the tone past 1 o'clock it sounded like my head with the presence too high--you were driving the poweramp input too hard. Might sound better with the level in the middle and the tone closer to 3 than noon.

      I did have the master volume up on around 6...I'll try it again with the volume lowered...I think we will do a couple of videos with "amp in a box" style pedals going into the effects return! Thanks Glenn

    • @LeviBulger
      @LeviBulger 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You pretty much have to run the output on max on a ds1. It's fairly low output. And the power section can absolutely handle it, I mean it's used to being driven by tubes.

      Make sure to just plug it into the return of the effects loop! You plug your guitar into the input of the pedal and the output of the pedal goes to the return of the effects loop
