Here's little ol' me trying out this iconic pedal. The DS-1 has been used by everyone and their dog. It's provided classic sounds for albums such as...well I don't know, but say a guitarist, and chance are he's used this distortion. Steve Vai has been known to use it, and that's enough for me. So I thought I'd review the DS-1 and see if it's any good. It is after all a quite affordable distortion pedal, so it's always worth taking a look at.
    Hope you enjoy the video.

Excellent review, demo and guitar playing aa always. I may of had this pedal before. I cant remember. I do have currently the Boss DS-2 which is a bit less a jar of angry bees and it has a secondary mode with a jar of angry wasps in the turbo mode. .

I removed the D5 diode in my Boss DS1. Made a world of difference. You get way more volume and thickness, and takes that high end fizz out. But it reduces the gain a tad bit. But it is worth it .

Keep this in mind, back in the day amps didn't have good clipping overdrives, so this pedal really rocked out cheap and expensive amps
Also this pedal sounds even better in a live band. (This is not a bedroom pedal)

Strymon Riverside costs 345,00 Euros and Boss DS-1 costs 60,00 Euros (at Thomann.de). On the DS-1 you can back off the distortion a bit from full on to avoid hiss and the level set at unity (~2:00 o'clock). I found the best setting is Tone=10:00, Level=2:30, Distortion=2:00-3:00. Oh, and it's more pedalboard friendly than the Strymon, draws less current and you can have it with a battery for a long time!

    • @MrPolevaulter
      @MrPolevaulter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sure is. The SD-1 is about the same, and I like it more. The Mosky D250 is even less, and I like that even more.
The Strymon is surprisingly pedalboard friendly, if you need more than one sound. It does quite a few, which saves money and space, plus it has an inbuilt noise gate, which again saves money and space.
But again, whatever floats your boat. It's a matter of taste really.

The tone at his first quarter, level full or almost, gain just before or after half. But most important : on a slight crunch tone. Vintage Marshall are perfrect. The ds1 behavior change drastically, particulary its tone knob.
    Love it with humbuckers.
What i love about the ds1 is that it's not easy to use. And when people tell me and the end of a gig : "what pedal are u using"? A simple ds1! "No way!?" 😁

Although it's not one of my favorite drive pedals, the DS-1 (and DS-2) is a pretty great distortion, if it's used right. This pedal sounds best with humbuckers, played through a clean, Fender style amp. It also sounds good plugged straight into a mixer. It never seems to work well with overdriven Marshall-style amps, since the added compression really mangles and squashes the DS-1's already limited frequency range. It isn't a gain beast designed to push an already loud amp. It's just a splash of dirt meant for clean, nice sounding amps. Kurt Cobain was able to make it work. Why can't metal players? It's your choice of amp.

It really is quite something. It keeps definition of complex chords even at (relatively) high gain. Also, moving along the fretboard and sounding awfully squeaky at high notes. Well, not with it.

What amp were you using? Good sound for single coil bridge pickup. I find my Strat bridge pickup a bit squeely and too bright with a lot of distortion. Guitar had a lot more thickness with the Boss than the Strymon? Good pedal if you want to thicken up a Strat.

I have the Ds2 instead of Ds1, and I think it´s a better bang for the buck. Ds2 is a bit warmer, yet a bit darker, and also it doesn´t sound like those old battery portable radios when tone is maxed out. I love overdrives too. I have Boss Fbm1 59 Fender Bassman, which sounds wonderful. : )

Does the Fender sound better for you than the Strymon? The definition was very impressive. I thought the Boss sounded quite good, it had the issues you mentioned, but I did like the smooth, flutey lead tone quite a bit. WAY better than I thought it would be. It's not surprising to find out they sell tons of them.

Two videos one day. Earlier referred to by yourself as "a c*ckup" 🤔. Maybe that happened again....
But as for general opinion: I feel Boss works quite well for the beginning of my chain (sustainer/compressor or cs3) and the end (noise suppressor). Other than that Boss is never an option. I've owned several and they never give me what I'm looking for. But I will say this: this last weekend I had my mum visiting me (my kids actually) and even she mentioned I had improved my technique quite a bit. So I've been fairly pumped up about this.
And then you play some comparison-riffs. M*therf*cker, you got me down 😂. Well played during your discussion. Such a distinctive control. I tip my hat to thee.
And. Fender Malmsteen OD all the way. 👌

Definitely not a pedal to use the tone knob more than 12 o' clock 😁. Specially if you're using a Stratocaster or an SG. In "fatter" guitars, such as Les Paul or Explorer, could be different. I have this pedal and I never use it, never totally convinced me. From time to time I give it another chance, but it doesn't want to help LOL.
